2011 *All-Encompassing* End-of-Year Reveals!

I searched for a similar thread started but didn't find any. Let me know if I missed it!

Anyone interested in posting their 2011 end-of-year reveal in one place to INSPIRE us all for 2012?

No matter what product, technique or Challenge you used in 2011, we can post them all here with details.
(Of course, still post in your challenge thread.)

Inspire all of us no matter hair type or if we're relaxed, natural, transitioning, loc'd, etc.

Your pic does not have to only be a difference in length.
It can be ANYTHING that you've made progress on, i.e., thickness, edges, hemline, breakage, shedding...anything that's progress and that you feel will help the next person.

Please post your pics in Dec 2011 or Jan 2012 (or later if you forget as long as it's your 2011 pics!) Starting pic and ending pic would be nice, but if not, then definitely an ending pic. And let us know the info below.

  • Identify your 2011 progress. (length, edges, thickness, etc.)

[*]What thing(s) do you feel contributed the MOST to your progress?

[*]What challenges did you participate in during 2011?

[*]What's your key word of advice for strong, healthy hair?

[*]Is there anything you'll change in 2012?

***Update 12/20 -- My flat iron attempt was an utter FAIL, so this is my blowout!

Identify your 2011 progress. (length, edges, thickness, etc.)
Went from TWA to SL.

What thing(s) do you feel contributed the MOST to your progress?
Protective styling, sulfur oil.

What challenges did you participate in during 2011?
SL 2011, Sulfur Oil, 2 Inches in 4 Months

What's your key word of advice for strong, healthy hair?
K.I.S.! Take your time to learn your hair.

Is there anything you'll change in 2012?
In 2012 I will change my growth aid quarterly to stave off any stalls. I'll likely rotate my sulfur oil with MT and a simple EO oil mix.

Hmm...well I went from SL relaxed and transitioning to past SL natural so far. Fingers crossed for a little more growth before the end of the year.

What thing(s) do you feel contributed the MOST to your progress?

Low manipulation and constant PSing

What challenges did you participate in during 2011?

What challenges did I NOT participate in??lol SL 2011, Cowash, HYH, Use Up Your Stash, BC to WL

What's your key word of advice for strong, healthy hair?

Listen to what your hair needs and not what your inner PJ THINKS that it needs to try and keep it as simple as possible.

Is there anything you'll change in 2012?

Incorporate more heat in my reggie and wear my hair out more often. Pix to come at the end of the year.

Identify your 2011 progress. (length, edges, thickness, etc.)

My progress was letting go of raggedy split ends, thickening up, stop breakage. Growing out my damaged brittle bangs. My ends are not tangly anymore. I also wanted to get shiny soft hair. My progress included finally nailing down my staple products and reggie and now I'm just going to sit back and let it grow.

What thing(s) do you feel contributed the MOST to your progress?

What contributed most was adding a weekly protein conditioner back into my reggie as well as using clear rinses again, which I believe adds a extra layer of protection against heat. Also I've gotten lazier with my hair which has lead to low manipulation and not using heat at all and mostly wearing airdried ponytails, buns, and roller sets. In the past few months my hair has only been flatironed once by me and once by my stylist.

What challenges did you participate in during 2011? None

What's your key word of advice for strong, healthy hair?

For me it is protein. My hair was shedding and breaking pretty bad. In the beginning of my journey I always did protein treatments and I had gotten to the point where all I used was moisturizing conditioner. My hair loves protein and I just had to listen to it and give it what it was asking for.

Is there anything you'll change in 2012?
I will stop cutting. I have approached WL so many times in my journey and trimmed back due to splits and thinning, but since I have almost eliminated heat from my journey. I feel I will not have the need to trim as much. Also I bought a new soft bristle brush. I was using the very hard bristle brush and I think it was causing damage.

I will post pictures beginning in Jan 1. I have pictures of the damage as well as new healthy hair.

I'll post my pics when I flat iron in December.

Identify your 2011 progress. (length, edges, thickness, etc.)
Went from SL to touching APL.

What thing(s) do you feel contributed the MOST to your progress?
Low manipulation and dcing.

What challenges did you participate in during 2011?
DDDC challenge, Sulfur (off and on), HYH, LHCF Bootcamp ( I cut about 2 inches off to even up the back with the front), and Steam Challenge (at least every 2 weeks)

What's your key word of advice for strong, healthy hair?
Be patient and research before you do anything.

Is there anything you'll change in 2012?
I will trim more often every 3 months (1/2 inch or less), not join as many challenges (still take care of my hair but not join so many), experiment more with wigs and focus more on overall health than hair:)

I have had retention for the first time this year since my journey in 2010 when I gave in and cut off all the heat damaged ends. :lachen:

What thing(s) do you feel contributed the MOST to your progress?
Protective styling 100% of the time is the culprit. :yep:

What challenges did you participate in during 2011?
BSL2011; Made it
MBL2011: Will know if I made it next month when I take a relaxer pic.

What's your key word of advice for strong, healthy hair?
Moisture/Protein balance - hands down!

Is there anything you'll change in 2012?
Most likely not. Why fix what's not broken.

I will post a pic next month at the time of my MBL2011 reveal.

Saving my spot :) I'll be flat ironing in December, so I'll post my pics then....

Identify your 2011 progress. (length, edges, thickness, etc.)
My progress was definitely length & regaining some of the thickness I had when I was a kid.

What thing(s) do you feel contributed the MOST to your progress?
Hands down? Protective styling. I know it doesn't work for everyone, but it is a must in order for me to hit 80%+ retention.

What challenges did you participate in during 2011?
Let's see if I can remember lol....SL 2011, APL 2011, BSL 2011...LadyP Challenge...Sulfur 2011 (although I dropped out earlier this year :look:)....

What's your key word of advice for strong, healthy hair?
I don't know if I'm in a position to give advice yet. What's worked for me, though, is maintaining my moisture/protein balance. I'm still trying to figure it out, but I'm alot more educated on what works for my strands than I was this time last year, that's for sure.

Is there anything you'll change in 2012?
I'll definitely be adding stronger protein treatments to my reggie in 2012. I think I'll start by adding an egg to my light PT, then I'll assess from there. In 2011, I got my moisture levels in check; I hope to get my protein game in check in 2012

I always get excited this time of year

* Identify your 2011 progress. (length, edges, thickness, etc
Mainly in length my avi and siggy pics are approximately 1 year apart

* What thing(s) do you feel contributed the MOST to your progress?
Honestly I'm surprised because I really slacked this year. Hair stayed in bun despite my declarations of variety. I didn't moisturize well and I spent too much time in OT

* What challenges did you participate in during 2011?
WL and MBL. I fell off sulfur after one day

* What's your key word of advice for strong, healthy hair?
"Listen to your hair. Learn your hair. What seems to work for the masses may not work for you. There's more than one way to skin a cat. (sorry Paxton I wasn't talking about u)
* Is there anything you'll change in 2012?

Yes! I very recently accepted the fact (after years) that glycerin doesn't work for me. None of the holy grail products gave me the feel I was seeking. My hair responds best to water, butters, and oils. With that in mind I tried an alternative combo that has worked magic on my hair. Now I can simplify my products.

Also I'm going to do more frequent microtrims.

With Thanksgiving over, end of the year is approaching like lightening. Still on the search for a quality, but not overpriced flat iron so I can post my end-of-year flat iron pics. (I really love shopping/searching for one!)

Identify your 2011 progress. (length, edges, thickness, etc.)

I had progress all around this year. My hair went from thin/unhealthy/shoulder length to thick, healthy (especially ends), APL!
I learned how to care for my hair myself instead of having to run to my hair stylist and just TRUST that she knew my hair well.

What thing(s) do you feel contributed the MOST to your progress?

Protective Styling, Weekly deep conditioining, heat only occassionally,

What challenges did you participate in during 2011?
APL, Hide Your Hair,

What's your key word of advice for strong, healthy hair?
Learn YOUR hair, learn what works for it and then stick to that!

Is there anything you'll change in 2012?
I want to learn more Protective Styles...other than that, I'm going to do the same thing I have been doing and just remember that it takes time :)

The pics below are January 2011 and November 2011 (11/28/11)
