Besides flaking and itchy scalp, how do YOU know if your scalp is dry?

The answer may be obvious to some, but I am stumped. It's easy to tell if your hair is dry, but what about your scalp? My scalp is not flaking or itching but my hair has been shedding like crazy since this past Spring. At first I thought it was seasonal, so now I'm wondering if it's dry scalp.

if u part your hair, a dry scalp looks kinda gray.
