Blowdrying help!

Okay, so for some reason, every time I blow-dry, I detangle my hair prior to drying but during the blow-dry, it seems like my ends re-tangle, and I have to sort of force the comb through my ends.
Now, my ends aren't in the best condition now but even when they were, I still had this problem, and I think that is why my blowdried hair (and consequently my flat ironed hair) is stiff.
I'm not really sure what to do.
I keep my ends moisturized well and sealed and always do ACV rinses and regular protein treatments, so I have no idea what could be going on with my ends.
I'm thinking of rollersetting instead of blowdrying but I would still like to know what the issue could be.

ETA: Maybe my hair is just too porous to blowdry? I know I've read lilsparkle825 saying that she doesn't blowdry, and this is one of the reasons. Maybe I should just give it up?

I honestly don't really know. My hair is the same way - I just think it hates blow drying...the hair isn't totally straight so when moisture hits it, it just starts to curl right on up and tangle like crazy. When I flat iron, I twist my hair the night before now.

You're probably right.
I think I'm going to give up trying to blowdry. Since I won't be putting in anymore braids on blowdried hair, I guess I won't need it anymore.

do you start from the roots or ends? I know one youtuber she dryed her ends first on coolshot/cool and then moved upward and so she wasn't pushing tangles towards her ends. The same as if you would be detangling from your ends to roots.

So true Fhrizzball. I had this same problem when I was blowdrying my hair, but NEVER had this issue blowdrying my kids hair. My DD's blowdry always comes out so straight, even her ends...I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong.

Then it hit me- duh! Blowdry your hair the same way you detangle lol. I'll be doing this when I blowdry for my next full length check in June.

yep. i concur with the cool shot to the ends. also, are you DC-ing before blow drying? some people need the extra boost of moisture before using direct heat.

also, what's the brand of your flat iron? i used to use a belson pro that left my hair stiff and not so straight. now i have a Jilbere that leaves my hair feeling moisturized, straight, and smooth. my jilbere reminds me of Christian Louboutins because the plates are red but i digress

I think blowdrying natural hair is an artform. My stylist gets me relaxer straight, where I look like Rudy Huxtable when I do it. I think it's easier to do it on someone else than yourself. I know that my stylist started blowdrying my ends first and then worked his way up. Maybe that'll help.

Thanks so much for your responses ladies!
And yes, I do blowdry from the ends up. I didn't think to try using a cool shot first.
But IA that it seems so much easier to do on someone else. I blowdry my best friend's hair all the time and I get it relaxer straight without much of an effort.
But I think I am going to retire my blowdryer. I need to baby my ends over the next month or so anyway since the braids made them feel like crap.
And I use a Babyliss. I've been using it for a long time with no issue, and when I was younger and could get my hair really straight with the blowdryer, this flat iron had no issue. It's my favorite flat iron. Gets my hair verrrrry straight but the stiffness from the blow dry is hindering me from getting the most swang.
*shrug*
I give up!

What's the purpose of your blow dry?

If it is not for straight hair, but to stretch it, ever thought about not using a comb and using your hands only? I think pinkskates has a youtube video on the method.

I was using it to straighten. I used it once last month to stretch my hair for my braids, and didn't really care that it was stiff. But when I want my hair to be straight, my ends seem to be causing the problem.

I blowdry on cool and after hair is dry and stretched I use heat to smooth.

If I use heat the whole time my hair is dry and still, using the above method my hair is smooth and has movement.

The funny thing is.....I blowdried last night. :lachen: Intended to straighten tonight, but I didn't get around to it and it's almost bedtime. Maybe tomorrow. I didn't have a decent blowdryer OR flat iron here since my blowdryer was cheap and Mama stole my Solia, so I bought a Babyliss blowdryer (nice to see you have one too) and a Croc flat iron from TJMaxx. This is what happened when I blowdried:

I use a comb attachment on my mom's hair, but I used a Denman bc it's all I had. My ends felt the same -- rougher than the roots. Hopefully comb chasing when I flat iron will solve this.

i personally think the comb attachment is the debil. Tension method is the best for natural hair with tangle prone ends.

I'll have to check out this tension method because it confuses me. Doesn't it require you holding the ends? So how do they get detangled?

This is precisely why I need the aid of a comb or brush. With the tension method, my ends stay bushy and tangled, even if I finger comb at the end of the process.

What do u detangle with? Are you sure its completely detangled.

When I run into sections that I didn't detangle well when I am blow drying I will use my spray bottle to rewet that section of hair and detangle again then go back in and blow dry that section! That usually helps me avoid that crunchy feeling.

It's usually pretty detangled. I use a wide-toothed comb and follow it with a Denman if necessary.
But it doesn't matter because I am cutting off these ends tomorrow, so I am hoping it will eliminate this issue. :-/

I know you said you're cutting the ends off, but just in case you blow dry again "one day"...

As a natural I made sure to start blowdrying on soakingwet hair. To me that was the key to getting my hair straight with the blowdryer. I often used the tension method.

1) Deep Condition
2) Rinse well, apply leave in and a tiny amount of serum
3) Detangle section by section (about 2 inch sections)
4) Tie up the rest of the hair in several wet ponytails (usually about 8)
5) Start at the TOP of your head and hold that section taut, thoroughly detangle it, start at the ends and blow dry to the top. I used my denman brush on the roots to make sure they got super straight.

Always blow dry on the lowest heat setting that can get your hair straight.

This method worked for me. Also I alwaysused straightening shampoo and conditioners like Redken Smooth Down or Paul Mitchell Silky Straight product lines so that my hair cuticle would lay flat.

As a texlaxed head (now) I still use Redken Smoothdown for the best straightening effect. I hope this helps someone. :)

OMG your hair is absolutely phabulous. I love it. You have given me inspiration for the rest of 2011. Keep doing what you doing.
