This summer, I will be staying two months and a half in a rural village in Senegal for an international cooperation program. I will be staying with a host family in a home with no running water and limited electricity.

Does anyone have any advice for how to care for my hair in these conditions? I have very dry hair and don't know how I should style it. Do you have any hairstyle, regimen or products to recommend?

Bring a spray bottle you can fill with water to moisturized whenever needed, and your choice of products. You should still be able to wash your hair however you will be bathing there. It might also be a good idea to get braids or twists for that time period.

    I’d install box braids

I would cornrow or mini braid my hair with no extension added. Bring a spray bottle, aloe vera juice and oil ( for skin and hair).

Definitely braids... Probably box braids or mini vs cornrows since you'll be there for two months. Bring a spray bottle and an oil of your choice...

Maybe take some sea breeze or something to cleanse your scalp with when you don't have access to water.

Individual braids. With or without extensions.

Another vote for braids. Oil your scalp with castor oil or shea butter. Bring some pretty scarf as back up. If it's dusty where you are going, you may need to tie your hair in the day time. Otherwise you will need to wash it all the time.

Thank you, ladies! I'll probably get braids or twists. I was thinking of getting them done over there but I'm tender headed and scared to let just anyone style my hair.

I do think that it will be dusty where I'm going, so I'll probably tie my hair up.

Here's a pic near the village where I'll be staying for the curious ones: https://earth.app.goo.gl/xuEp5

So, I'll be leaving this Sunday and decided to get my hair braided over there. Any product suggestions?

It sounds basic, but get plenty of braid spray.

I would do what the women of the family and/or village do for their hair IF their hair is in good condition.

I wouldn't get my hair braided by anyone I don't trust tbh. Why not get it braided here by someone you know is gentle? Or do box braids yourself?

You’re right, I’m taking quite a risk. I just didn’t feel like spending my last day home getting my hair braided but I may reconsider.

I’m too slow and not good enough to do box braids on my big ol’ head, lol.

    Good advice.

    Thanks for reminding me.

I wish you the safe travels and I hope you enjoy your time there.

I would tell the braiders not to braid 1/4- 1/2 inch of your edges, all around even in the back. These are very sensitive areas. That means parting the area yourself and paying extra close attention to make sure they don’t braid it.

Also tell them not to braid too tight.
