DIY Pre-Shampoo Treatments
When it comes to Do-It-Yourself or DIY Pre-Shampoo Treatments I am a big pushover. I love going into the kitchen and whipping up a great scalp or strand nourishing treatment.
Maybe my love of DIY Pre-Shampoo Treatments is tied to my great admiration for celebrity hairstylist Robert Hallowell who is referred to as The Kitchen Beautician.
I love visiting Robert (Rawbert as his besties call him) at his home perched high above Los Angeles on Washington Mountain.
His amazing kitchen is always chock full of fresh veggies, fruits and amazing ingredients for his amazing DIY Pre-Shampoo Treatments and other homemade hair treatments.
Listed below are some of my favorite DIY Pre-Shampoo Treatments which I have picked up from Rawbert.
Olive Oil & Lavender Essential Oil Conditioning Scalp Treatment For Normal Hair

Use this treatment once a week, especially if your hair has been overexposed to sun and wind. Lavender essential oil has many healing and nourishing properties and when combined with an olive oil base will improve the elasticity of the hair. When hair is healthy and has great elasticity it’s less likely to break, rip or tear.
These DIY Pre-Shampoo Treatments will help leave hair softer and shinier. Lavender has other benefits. It will help relax the scalp and the entire body.
Ingredients – DIY Pre-Shampoo Treatments

1/2 cup of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) – organic if possible

Optionally you may prefer to use jojoba or another light oil instead of olive oil.
10 drops of lavender essential oil – organic if possible

Optional: 4-10 drops of Bach Flower Rescue Remedy
Instructions - DIY Pre-Shampoo Treatments

Warm olive, jojoba or desired oil in a saucepan over low heat. Do not microwave oil. Remove oil from heat. Make sure the oil is not too hot to apply to the scalp or the head. Add drops of lavender essential oil (EO) and Bach Flower Rescue Remedy if desired.
How To Apply - DIY Pre-Shampoo Treatments

This treatment is best when the hot oil is applied to the scalp and damp hair. However, it can be applied to the scalp and dry hair if desired. Massage oil into the scalp using only the pads of your fingers. Be careful not to use fingernails or anything sharp on the scalp since this can leave tiny cuts or scratches on the surface.
For better coverage section hair into 2″ sections. If desired, use a clean cotton ball to apply the oil to the scalp and/or hair. Cover hair with plastic wrap, a clean warm towel that can resist oil stains, a clean thick rag or a shower cap. Leave oil mixture on hair for up to one hour.
After oil has soaked into the hair for the desired time, step into a lukewarm shower and cleanse or shampoo oil from hair.
Follow normal cleansing/washing routine including applying rinse-out conditioners, detangling and finishing with a cool/cold water rinse. Towel blot hair, apply desired leave-in conditioning or styling cocktail and air or blowdry.
Note: When possible hair should be air dried to prevent heat damage.
Jojoba Hair Conditioning Clay – DIY Pre-Shampoo Treatments

Use this treatment once a week, especially if your hair has been overexposed to sun and wind.
Ingredients – Jojoba Hair Conditioning Clay – DIY Pre-Shampoo Treatments

1/2 cup of jojoba oil – organic if possible

Note: Optionally you may prefer to use extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) or another similar oil instead
3 tablespoons of coconut oil – organic if possible
4 tablespoons of powdered white clay or similar clay
1 cup of distilled water
Optional: 4-10 drops of essential oil of choice such as lavender, ylang ylang, rosemary or similar.
Instructions - DIY Pre-Shampoo Treatments

Warm jojoba and coconut and/or desired oils in a saucepan over low heat. Do not microwave oil. Remove oil from heat. Make sure the oil is not too hot to apply to the scalp or the head.
Put powdered clay in a separate container and slowly add distilled water. Stir until clay forms a paste. Only use as much water as needed for a thick paste. Combined melted oils with the clay paste. Add optional drops of desired essential oils.

Summary

Be sure to experiment with different base oils besides jojoba, coconut and extra virgin olive oil. You may also wish to experiment with different essential oils added to the mixture. Be sure never to apply essential oils directly to the skin or scalp unless it is specifically indicated.
DIY Pre-Shampoo Treatments can be nurturing and healing for your scalp and strands.

Enjoy them when you can!
