Does hair growth slow for catch-up purposes?

Hi everyone,

I'm a natural 4A with about 6 inches of hair all over. Because it's the same length everywhere, my hair appears to be in layers with the back of my hair touching my shoulders and the front of my hair touching my ears.

However, I'm noticing that the growth rate of the hair in the back has slowed to almost nothingness whereas the hair in the front is growing extremely fast. I'm in twists so I can tell how much growth I'm getting. And my hair is healthy with very little breakage.

Is it possible that my hair in the back is slowing so that the front can catch up to the back so that all of my hair will eventually fall at the same place on my body, ie shoulders?

Has anyone else noticed this on their own hair?

I hope this makes sense.

Thanks,

Ebony

I have noticed that the "shorter" parts of my hair grow fatser than the "longer" ones. My hair is the same as yours.

Yesterday I read an article that talked about how our bodies naturally want things to be balanced and even. It said that this happens and to avoid it don't put any layers or bangs in your hair (or just not many layers if you really want them). I'm not sure if it's true though.

I read that same article and blew it off until I saw DontSpeakDefeat's side by side progress picture. The shorter portion of her hair (left side) grew a substaintial amount in comparasion to the rest of her hair in a time period of a little over a month. Since a picture is worth a thousand words here's the link.

I don't think so. It could be that the hairs in the back of your hair are at a resting period while the hair in the front are just in your growing stage.

How could ALL the hair in the back be at a resting period though?

mine does not...the back of my hair in my opinion gets a kick out of itself by growing way faster than the front. I have been doing baby trims in the back of my hair to try and let the front catch up, and it seems to be working. I am going to keep the back at bra-strap length until the front catches up.

You should try massage on the slow growing areas. It has helped my slow growing sides to catch up

I noticed that the back of my hair (the longest part) has slowed down sooooo much, while the front is a thick mass of hair and it just keeps growing. When I read that article, I didn't think much of it, much now it's makin' me go hmmm......I'm tryih' the massages too to see if that works.

may be something to this theory because I certainly see this happening with my hair. First the back of my hair took off, and then the front bang area and then the top part in the crown area. The sides in the temple area acted like ...
they don't know what they were supposed to do!!!!
Just sat there looking stunned
or something.
I am like..."lookie hear"...don't mess with Mahalialee!!!! Well wouldnt't you know that they started to move
and all the layers just.... WHAT????
slid into one length AND THEN guess what???The back that was just a racing to the midback area stopped COLD!!!
AND LADIES IT HAS BEEN SITTING RIGHT THERE FOR... 3 MONTHS...
So what the heck is it doing now?...IT IS GETTING THICKER!!!! and wavier
and more wavy...(BUT NOT LONGER)..so something is happening...and it had better be ... resting up for the next BIG growth LENGTH spurt, you betcha!!!Bonjour
I tell you the hair...it's playing us man...
lol

I read this, too. It's a theory of some long hair care specialists. I don't know what to make of it, either.
