What have you learned since you've joined LHCF?

I just want to say that I love you ladies! Anyways, I want to put this thread together so we can ALL learn and grow beautiful heads of hair.

Here is what I've learned.

MN is an antifungal ingredient that helps the hair grow.
Growth aides that contain sulfur contribute to hair growth.
Seaweed or kelp helps the hair grow faster, stronger, thicker.
Coconut oil is the best hair oil IMO. Through experience I have found it to be very moisturizing and lightweight. I also learned about different types of oils and their importance.
Indian hair products are fab.
Pre poo-ing help the shampooing process.
Baggying can deeply condition your hair.
Steam treatments INFUSE moisture into the hair. thanks SJ lol
Natural hair can be very beautiful and versatile.
Curlformers and bantu knots rock!

HHG!

★ People put all types of crazy things in their hair to make it grow...:look:

The most important lesson for me is that with the right care type 3 & 4 hair can grow as long as we want it to.

People who use no lye need a chelating shampoo.
Hard water can cause bad dryness.
Oil does not moisturize.
Scalp stimulation is important.
Dusting.
A good diet is important.

Goal:Hip length stretched
What have I learnt?

My hair can grow to long lengths with care and patience. Long tresses are not exclusive to other ethnicities.
It loves moisture
Pre-pooing is great for my hair
Washing it more often is better for my scalp and helps the growing process
To be extremely gentle with my hair
I don't need to comb my hair everyday, leaving it alone is better for it.
It loves the EOs

These are things that I have found to be incredibly helpful! I've learned a lot in the last three months I've been here and I probably won't get everything written down here but here goes...
  • Protecting my ends by protective styling... I am totally hiding my hair with wigs.
  • Baggying keeps my hair mosturised and ends in good condition
  • Deep conditioning with alternating protein/moisture conditioners twice a week has strengthened my hair
  • Using Ayurveda instead of commercial shampoos (which dried out my hair) as added strength to my hair
  • Vitamins/supplements for hair health and growth (Vitamin B, Silica, Flaxseed, MSM, etc) are beneficial
  • Minimal combing and gentle handling has made a world of difference. Less breakage too!
  • Using a shower comb, then wide tooth... excellent
  • Moisturising twice a day (why didn't I do this before)... My hair is no longer like straw due to this, DC'ing and baggying.
  • Sealing with oils !
  • Flat iron/blowdrying techniques
  • Most of all I've learned that it is possible to grow my hair long with the right techniques, determination and patience!

  • I learned that I can wash my hair more than once per week
  • that deep conditioning is my best defense against dryness/breakage
  • I learned how beneficial protein treatments are
  • I learned how important it is too read product ingredients
  • I learned petroleum, mineral oil, lanolin are not my friends
  • doesnt matter what others say, does the product work for my hair.
  • my hair loves airdrying!!!
  • I can rollerset my hair and not get under the dryer and have powerful beautiful long lasting curls
  • How to properly flatiron my hair (high protection, low heat, one pass-make it count)
  • I learned that Flexirods are the bomb!
And last but definitely not the least, I learned that black women can grow their hair as long as they want!!!

I learned that:

1. you don't need shampoo to have clean hair.
2. protective styles retain length.
3. bagging ends or entire head is genius.
4. home made concoctions tend to work better than store bought stuff.
5. co-washing is my new love.
6. put down the blow dryer/flat iron/ hot comb/ curling iron.
7. "ethnic" products with petro and mineral oil are no-no's. IMO
8. to seal moisture with an oil (coconut/olive/castor).
9. sulfur products are great for growth.
10. don't listen to the haters who have no hair and want to tell me what I do is "wrong," but still wish they had my length while they ripping out their hairlines with super duper tight weaves and relaxers every month. Stubborn @$$es.

Where would I start......:perplexed

I guess the most important ones are

Finding products and a regimen that works for your hair
Consistency is key
Water, water, water and oh yeah.....WATER.

I could get specific but it would take at least 3 or 4 posts, so I will just say a lot of what I have learned is in my fotki. :yep:
