im back in school, and will be required to do a lot of writing. Should I pay for the premium service? Has anyone paid for it? Are there cheaper alternatives? This school has me extremely paranoid about making sure my writing is correct, and that I'm not plagiarizing. I'm an online student too, so going to someone else to check my writing isn't available.

I wouldn't pay for it. You can download the add-on for Microsoft Word, but the stock spelling and grammar checker is fine if you customize the settings. For Word on Windows, you can change it to Grammar and Style and select the options you want it to check. On a Mac, at least for Word 2008, you can change the style (Technical, Academic, Formal, Custom, etc).

For plagiarism checkers, I use http://smallseotools.com/plagiarism-checker/ and https://www.quetext.com/.

I was paying for it at one point and it wasn't worth it. Save your money. They would highlight "advanced errors" but wouldn't give solutions for them, which just made things more complicated. The free version is good for basic spelling and grammar checks, but it's not worth paying for the upgraded version, in my opinion.

Absolutely NOT!!!! The grammar checker that comes in most word processing programs is good enough. Couple that with a thesaurus, also included in most software and you're good to go!

Didn't realize that there was such a think as a "plagiarism checker"
This will come in handy. Thanks!

I was thinking of paying for it as well. I was going to pay someone but I don't think she'll have enough time/notice.

I had grammerly and found that it was not worth the money. There are free versions of grammar and plagiarism checkers. As mentioned up thread., it would point out errors but provide no suggestions. You can get that for free by updating your grammar checker in Word.

Set your Word to check for passive voice and other grammar problems. After I fixed that, I cancelled grammerly.

File>Options>Proofing then update Grammar and Writing Style.

If I remember correctly, I got this 6 years ago under the recommendation of a teacher. And i remember thinking it was a serious waste.

I paid for my subscription when it was on sale. I love it! I use it for work and for personal writing. Worth it for me along with my usage and style guides.
