Here are some incerpts from this month's Black Hairstyle's and Trends, very informative, hth somebody:

About Alcohols
"Alcohols to be concerned about in hair and skin-care products that can causes adverse reactions are ethanol, denatured alcohol, ethyl alcohol, methanol, benzyl alcohol, isopropyl, and SD alcohol......"

About Conditioners
"Humectants are substances that can be found in many conditioners, conditioning shampoos, and dual-purpose haircare products. Commonly found in creme rinses and basalms, they preserve moisture by retarding water's evaporation process in the hair and reduce brittleness by making the hair soft and supple. Creme rinses and balsams contain isopropyl miristates, which are composed of glycerin, propylene glycol, sorbitol, and urea."
"When choosing a conditioner, keep in mind that your hair's needs should always dictate the type of products that you choose. Hair conditioners generally fall into six major categories: moisturizers, reconstructors, acidifiers, detanglers, thermal protectors, glossers, and essential fatty oils."
"Moisturizers vary in viscosity and are highly concentrated with humectants that work well offsetting the effects of sun damage and chemical treatments on the hair enhancing the hair's shimmer and luster."
"Reconstructors are conditioners, usually creme in texture, that have added benefits when used with heat. Meant to strengthen the hair shaft and counteract effects of hair damage, reconstructors are considered the best type of conditioners for imparting protein to the hair given that they contain hydrolyzed human hair keratin-protein and 19 amino acids found in the hair. Because of its low molecular weight, human hair keratim protein has strong penetrating abilities that are helpful in reguvenating the hair's vitality."
"The term acidifier refers to products that have a pH ranging from 2.5 to 3.5. Acidifiers adjust the hair's pH by closing the hair's hydrogen bonds. They strengthen the hair's elasticity leaving it bouncy and free flowing. Acidifiers are great for people with fine textured hair because they do not weigh the hair down. Detanglers are also classified as both acidifiers and polymers, which are strings of "like" molecules-a chain, with pHs that normally range from 2.5 to 3.5. Detanglers shield the hair shaft by coating it, closing the cuticle of the hair which causes tangling."
"Thermal protectors safeguard the hair against the harmful effects of heat. They are heat absorbing polymers that distribute heat. Given that heat is among the major causes of hair damage, using a thermal protector is one of the best products you can use on your hair when blow-rying and using curling irons or hot rollers."

About Hot Oil Treatments
Hot oil treatments as a rule are generally good lubricators for the hair and are successful in treating dry scalp and brittle-over-porous hair. Furthermore, the use of mineral oil and petroleum should be minimized or avoided because they impede the hair's natural recycling process. Mineral oil and petroleum are not easily absorbed into the hair and tend to clog the pores and follicles stunting the hair's grwoth. They also attract dirt to the hair, causing i to cling and stick together and weigh the hair down. The use of products containing mineral oil or petroleum should be limited to those products that contain the least amount, if at all, of these ingredients."
