Ok ladies I am almost embarrassed to say this but 2 people have asked me if my husband is my younger brother. Now mind you he is 3 years older than me, I am 28. I work in education so when I was teaching I used to dress older on purpose because I was right out of college and wanted the students to think I was older (I work w/middle and HS kids). Now that I'm nearing 30 looking older just isn't cool. I need help from head to toe. I was going through my closet and most of my clothes look like old teacher outfits, and let's not talk about my shoes. I have a bunch of comfy flats because I used to stand up all day. Now I am starting an internship w/a counseling agency and I want a new look, I know my hubby is tired of me looking a mess too. I REALLY need help w/my professional and after work looks but I don't know where to start. I have listed some info about me, help PLEASE!

    My Body Type
I am a size 6, small chest w/ a little booty but I do have hips
    I am around 5'5"

    My Wardrobe
    - I have 3 nice suits, a couple of shirts and sweater, and a solid black CK button up dress that are decent everything else pretty much looks teachery
    - I have individual pieces that I bought on sale but I can't seem to create outfits w/them
-I like funky stuff and vintage clothing but I can never seem to pull the outfits together
-I need some professional but youthful stuff for work
    - I don't really have any going out clothes, I have a couple of decent summer dresses and 1 nice pair of jeans

    Hair and Makeup
    - I am clueless in the makeup dept., I don't really own any. I have a couple of eye shadows, concealer for the bags under my eyes, and lip gloss
    - I really need to try some new hairstyles. I am natural and typically wear twists and twist outs.

edit- I forgot to mention that I wear glasses, I like them because they hide the bags and puffiness under my eyes. Would contacts make me look younger though?

I am currently revamping my style too. After having 2 kids, my style went south and fast. Also taking into account I am heavier than I was pre-babies I am having to learn how to dress this new body.

My suggestion is to find out your body type: are you apple, pear, hourglas, etc. Then from there found out what fits your body well. Take a shopping list and buy basics according to this shopping list.

For accessories, look at fashion blogs, fashion magazines, women on the streets and copy copy copy.

Makeup is trickier, I would ask a friend who is really good with makeup or visit a makeup artist for some tips and ideas.

Speaking of friends, please ask your friends/husband for their opinions too. They can tell you what is looking good on you and what is not working. Only used this method if you trust their judgement.

For myself, I have found it is better for me to buy basic structured pieces, and then funk them up with purses, shoes, belts, jewelry, hats, makeup, jackets, cardigans and shirts.

Also check out www.polyvore.com for new ways to wear things you already have.

    Good luck.

I am trying my best to go from FRUMPY MOM to FOXY MOM.

Oh no! Ouch. That must hurt.
I'm 5 years my husband's senior and most people think I'm younger than him! (I guess it doesn't help him that he has a receding hairline  )
My suggestions would be to get a good skin care system going. I love Oil of Olay products (cleanser and moisturizer)... get your eyebrows shaped, either plucked or waxed professionally (can be done for $7 at most Asian nail shops)... and wax your lip if you have any lip fuzz. That alone will brighten up your face.
Keep makeup simple and fresh looking. Too much makeup can actually age you! My suggestions would be a simple powder compact (Maybelline Mineral Power Powder is AWESOME!! It only comes in a few colors- I got DARK... I'm like a Beyonce /Rhianna light brown color and it's so beautiful on. Pretty luminous glow to it! You would love it) That and some sheer pretty blush, a simple black or brown mascara and some lip gloss would do a lot for your look.
For your hair, just make sure it's always done. My hair is almost WL but I bun it a lot for the sake of protecting it :yep: But that doesn't stop me from style. You can wear a 1/2 wig with a head band and it wakes your whole look up so much. There are so many options and these are inexpensive.
I would get some fresh new blouses and slacks... try stores like Dots, Rainbow, Target and Walmart. Seriously, you don't have to spend a lot of money to look good! Keep your toes and fingers painted. Wear sexy underware, it makes you feel better about yourself :yep:
    Hope this helps!

It did hurt. :nono: I laughed it off but I REALLY felt bad. I get my brows and upper lip done but I will definitely follow your make up tips. I am currently in a wig challenge so your tip for the 1/2 wig is a perfect idea. One thing that does ruin my look sometimes is not keep my hair done. And I definitely need to up my game in the underwear department. I always notice that I feel better when I have on nice undies, I need some nice new underwear bad, I wouldn't have thought of that. It also makes my clothes look better when my undies fit right. Thank you for recommending such economical options, I am on a serious budget since I'm a student.

I'm with Caramela about the lingerie :yep:

MsLala Go "girly". . . extra Feminine!!! Never fails. . Sounds like you have a great figure. Try skirts or dresses and low heels (if that's comfy for you at work). Find your best feature (ie legs) and determine your best color (the one people compliment you most when you wear) and buy wardrobe items in that color. Buy perfume, get your nails/toes done, get a facial, buy a new lip gloss or bath product, get a massage. . . do something that makes *you* feel good about looking your absolute best. You have to feel it first to pull it off.

What wigs are you wearing? The choice in style may be adding unnecessary years to your look :look:

I recommend this book The Science of Sexy. The title throws it off. . . a "celebrity" stylist lists each possible body type/shape and what to wear to play up your best features and what to avoid like the plague (ie one type should avoid pattern dresses like the plague; another turtle/cowl necks). I found the book helpful esp when shopping so I don't waste money on items that are not flattering. :nono:

Hi Soror! I usually wear curly half wigs. I think I look younger when I wear twists. I agree w/you that I need to do something to feel good about myself. That is wear it starts, when I get busy I just don't take as good care of myself and I'm sure it shows in how I carry myself.

THanks I"m going to check out these sites.

I agree with the less is more approach when it comes to makeup. All I use is a foundation (Mac Studio Tech), mascara and lip gloss :smooches:

This is good because I don't really have any make up so that's less for me to buy! I need to find a good foundation.

Keep us updated on your progress. You can always get gloss for $1 at the beauty supply store and change it up with lip liner.

How do you style your hair under the half wig? I've been hesitant to get one because I think there will be a big lump because of my bun. And if I braid it, I will still have to pin the braids in the back, which will make 2 lumps. I just haven't figured it out.

If you get a curly 1/2 wig with a lot of volume, you will not be able to see the bun at all. Trust me, I have a big thick MBL bun tucked up into my SL curly 1/2 wig and the bun does not show :nono: :yep:

That is a good idea. They do have some cute stuff at the BSS sometimes.

When I wear a half wig I leave the first 1.5-2 inches of my hair loose and pull it back in a ponytail. The rest of my hair is braided up and pinned to lay down flat. Sometimes I flat twist my hair underneath. My hair is very thick so I have tried doing ponytails w/all of my hair and it is just too lumpy and doesn't lay right.

I went to the site and it has some great info!

    Hey there!

I do some image consulting on the side, and I have a friend who's a personal shopper....we'd love to help! Send me a PM if interested.

    In the meantime...

    Vintage Clothing
The important thing about purchasing vintage clothing is to make sure the cut and style is pretty timeless. the easiest way to do this is with dresses and skirts. That's the easiest thing to buy vintage and still look good. Then you keep them modern with the accessories. I do not recommend buying vintage shoes...LOL

There is an art to buying vintage. I have to say I'm just beginning to discover it, but I enjoy the hunt.

    Makeup
I'd suggest a good makeup that could (when applied with a smaller brush) serve as a concealer too. Most cream to powder foundations can do this. I'd perfect the five-minute face. Look on youtube for tutorials. For me the 5MF is primer, concealer, foundation, 1 shadow, mascara, blush and lip gloss.

    Going out clothes
I'd build 2-3 going out outfits around the jeans and perhaps that black button up CK dress. With the jeans I'd do:

    • Fitted blazer
    • white tee
    • cute color flats
    • color tote
    • fitted blazer
    • sexy cami
    • strappy heels
    • clutch
These are very basic jean outfits. You can always get really cute tops at places like Forever 21 without spending a fortune.

I love glasses!!!! So i don't recommend wearing contacts. Just make sure your frame is as stylish as you can afford.

As for your wardrobe, I'd recommend starting with a slightly "uniform" look and then become more adventurous from there. For me, that would be some nice slacks and a crisp top. Invest in a good white blouse...as expensive as you can afford. Then get some nice slacks in different colors or styles. Then you can always add your funky jewlery or accessories for some personality. You can probably use some of your "teachery" pieces, but just remix them with other pieces.

    Shopping advice
Buy outfits in whole. So if buy a pair of pants, don't end your shopping until you buy a shirt to go with it. That's how you end up with pieces and nothing to go with them. If you can't find anything to go with it, no matter how cute, I wouldn't purhcase it. Unless it's like a $1...LOL

I'd suggest perhaps taking pics of some of these pieces and either posting them here or sending them to me via PM. You could get some really good ideas....

    HTH!!!!!1

This is my 1st post ever - and its non-hair related. We're the same age so I just had to post. Great advice! I don't wear a lot of makeup only eyeliner & shadow when I go out (lots of trial and error!). What I tend to focus on is clothes! You could freshen up your look with a few trendy low cost pieces. It sounds like you have a great shape. Plums & purples are going to be hot this fall. I shop early & I shop often. From TJ Maxx to The Limited (no BCBG for me - I'm not spending much more than the prices at The Limited and that is with a coupon)

    Good luck!

Natural hair "IMO" addds years to women like nothing else!
Vintage clothes well stop in at DOTS or Rainbows look around at the youthful clothes even Forever 21 and check for something you would look nice in, you don't necessarily have to purchase from these places but it would give you an idea.

I'm 31 and I am just now learning some of these things so I will share

accessorize. Beg belts to accentuate your waist and that booty.
You can pull your teachery outfits together and into a more modern look by adding broaches---yep, they are making a comeback with the younger crowd.
Adorn your hair with shiny things like fancy hair combs, and headbands and also scarfs to use like a headband
Do an inventory on your shoes and polish up what you can, take to the shoe repair what you can and throw out what can't be helped---this will let you see what new shoes you can fit into your wardrobe.
I am not all into makeup, but for the look on my profile pic, I used Maybelline products, a liquid foundation, some mouse blush and eyeshadow, some black liner and mascara and that's it. takes about five minutes when I do it. Oh, and since you're a teacher and probably don't have time to retouch, invest in one of those all day lipsticks. They are a lifesaver.
Smile. A smile can make you look so much younger.
Get some prety dangly, but not too over the top earings, that will lighten up your face as well

Nooo....I happen to think the complete opposite  Sorry...
Natural hair makes anyone look young! Straight hair can look very severe and mature in my opinion.

I think it depends on the persons face and the hairstyle. I think people tend to associate natural hair w/maturity for some reason and this also makes people think I"m older. I think when I first cut my hair and had a twa I looked older than I do now w/longer hair.

I definitely am going to check our forever 21 and rainbow for some things I can add because I"m on a budget!
