Ryler Stylers- A Great Way To Stretch Natural Hair

Background (Can be skipped if you ain't got time for dat :look:)

I was looking through mahoganyknots's videos on youtube and I came across her video about using these crimper clips and I was in luuuuub :spinning:.

(If you watch please watch up until 2:18 :lachen::lachen:)

I use to do curlformers every wash to have a good stretch and I loved it. It started off smooth then it would eventually get big and fluffy. But y'all....I started to have a mini afro in the back of my head! :cry4:The top of the rollers were catching on my hair near the roots and my vulnerable crown got the brunt of it :( So I wanted to try out these rollers as a good replacement for the curlformers. I tried finding the exact same conair clips and y'all.....Conair done discontinued them thangs and they got them on ebay for bout $15 a pack!! :angry2:sooo....yeah it wasn't going to work.

I was bummed and I came across some other Korean crimper clips on aliexpress but they were soooo freaking tiny that it would have taken forever to do a whole head of hair with them. So I eventually came across Ryler Styler rollers and they seemed promising.

Process:
I started on hair that was previously stretched with a braidout. (I washed my hair put it in plaits-let it out to put back into plaits again) You can skip this but I always wear plaits so I just undid them and started from there just cause. Although I think it would help with setting the hair
braidoutblurredface.jpg
(I'm looking rough so y'all ain't bout to see my face in this one. Hair out of plaits)

I sectioned off my hair and wetted it with plain tap water. After I applied Eden's BodyWorks Coconut Shea leave-in conditioner (My NUMBER ONE defining conditioner) Afterwards I applied a healthy amount of shea butter to the section

IMG_4919.JPG
(right after wetting hair-hair has started to shrink a tiiiid bit and this is before conditioner/styler)

IMG_4920.JPG
(After conditioner. You see that clumping! I would advise some product that makes your hair clump. My hair sans products doesn't really clump but with this conditioner I get a lot of definition)

IMG_4924.JPG
(After applying NOW shea butter. Hair is very slick and defined. I looove using shea butter for setting hair. It's perfect :D)

After applying products, I sectioned off an even smaller section and began to clip down the rollers to my hair

IMG_4922.JPG
(MAKE SURE TO LEAVE SOME SPACE BETWEEN YOUR ROOTS AND THE BEGINNING OF THE ROLLER! Trust babygirl, your roots will be stretched even if you leave some space. If it's riiight up on your scalp you're gunna regret it! It's way too tight and you can risk causing breakage near your roots)

IMG_4926.JPG
(It helps with length checks too! There definitely wasn't this much hair out of the roller the last time I used these. I ended up adding a few more roller clips to some of the sections)

IMG_4932.JPG
(Pull hair towards the hinge to prevent hair from getting into the very edge of the clip and risking possible damage. Remember to pull taut to get smoother results)

IMG_4935.JPG
(Looking like an octopus with almost a head full or rollers. On the bottom left you can see a dried section. The hair will take the EXACT shape of the roller....lol. On the bottom right you can see some of my ends that I twirled)

**Will post more pictures in another post under this

***I was away from home and didn't bring enough clips so I had to finish the top-front part of my hair after the rest of my hair had set.

Results:
Really smoothed roots and my hair was very stretched without it being straightened. It's like a smooth twist or braidout. I set my hair with a single braid and rolled it into a bun right after finishing and I loved how it turned out. :love3:

The only thing is if you want to keep that lil squiggle curl I have nooo clue how to set your hair at night :/
I remember the first time I tried bantu knots and flat twists on different sections and they both came out looking more or less the same.

Pros:

  • Get a great stretch with little to no heat!
  • Relatively easy to use
  • Unlike curlformers that have a set length, you can always add or take away clips from a "clip row"

Cons:

  • If you have too many on at a time and you tender-headed :ohwell::ohwell:....so yeah they kinda hurt my scalp
  • Might take a while for the roots to set/dry compared to the rest of the length of the hair

Who's this for:

Naturals who would like to get a good stretch without using any or that much heat. If you want slicked and smooth roots for a certain styles. Also for those who like to bun their hair for protective styling. I think that if you braid it and leave it in a bun maaaaaaaaaan you wouldn't have to redo that thing 'til wash day! So yeah, for people who want to get a good amount of time out of a style, those who want a stretched bun for protective styling, and those who just want "crimpy hair"

Overall thoughts:

I barely remember my thoughts on them the first time I tried them but this second time around I loooove them. The biggest downfall for me is just how heavy they get when you end up putting a lot in your head :( I think I might solve this by doing my hair in sections and finishing a section before going on to the next one. The biggest risk with that is just accidentally rewetting an already set area.

Where to buy:

https://hairartproducts.com/rollers/ryler-stylers.html (Price is ok, if possible go and buy from a beauty supply store-will probably be cheaper there) $7.95 for a 12 pack. I bought ten but I think I still have three or four sets unused.

**** Also I just made a hair instagram! So add me and I'll add back other hair igs :afro: screenname= Kuckabugg (I just made it so there aren't any photos yet but there will be!)

If anyone is interested in buying and also trying these, please post some pictures and describe your technique! If you know of any other curlformer/ryler stylers type of rollers please share!! :drunk:

If you all have any questions please ask. I'm just gunna dump the rest of the photos here. Sadly, I didn't take any freaking pictures right after taking out my single braid the next day!!!! I'll post how it look after about six days...haha it looks more of less the same but my hair got bigger in the front.

Tips and tricks:

  • I know that some people like brushing/combing out their texture when setting their hair, but I would suggest defining your texture before doing this. I've been doing this by raking my hair with conditioner when finger detangling and it soo helps with the next detangling sessions. Also it helps with clumping/keeping strands separate. I'm detangling my hair now and I can feeeeeel the difference lawd! If I didn't smooth each curl/kink before....maaaaaane I would have tangles everywhere and this session would take even longer to do
  • I don't like using heat often so I mostly let it air dry but I also used a circulation fan...yuppp yupp that one. Judge away, but it helped. I also ran my blow dryer over a few sections and I believe that helps mostly with getting your roots dry which can be a problem.
  • BE STRATEGIC WITH PLACING YOUR ROLLERS. If you put them in at an awkward angle it can definitely hurt against your scalp. I only had a few wonky ones and I put a scruchie between my scalp and the roller and that helped a bit. Also putting a towel around your neck lifts the rollers.
  • I used a row of four in most sections of my hair. I used five on just a few sections
So yeah in the last photos my hair is already a week old so it's gotten a bit bigger and some shrinage occured in the "basketball game" photo...don't yall laugh at my corny snapchat :ohwell:

Can't think of anything else right now but if I do, I'll add it....sorry for typos

Beautiful hair!

I bought a bunch of these yearrrs ago off Ebay I got the Goody brand ones that look like the ones in the vid. I found them difficult to use and so heavy.

Thank you! The goody ones were heavy too? Dang, those actually looked like they would a bit lighter than the ryler ones.

Did you have any luck/good results with either of them?

Yup, I saw those new wave clips at Target. But I can't believe they only give you four??:whyme: That's not enough to do anything even with short hair :/ They don't look as secure as the other rollers but they do look a lot lighter

LOL! no problem, I'm happy to help

Girl, I actually have a funny story about linking them because you know, they come with NO instructions ughh. I ended up cutting them thinking that was how you were suppose to do it...bless my lil heart. But I'm attaching pictures to show you how.

They come flat in two stacks
Bend them into shape, and you'll see these little pink prongs on one end of each roller and on the other end there will be a single hole on each side. Align them up and push the prong from the back of the roller forward. And ya done!

Also I got them in large. I wish they could be a bit bigger but yeah

Yes and no. I was rushing because I did it before work. I rolled the ends with tiny rollers instead of using the wave clip all the way down my hair. I was afraid I did not have enough wave clips.

The outcome was not a fail but not a pass either. The roller made my hair look frizzy on the the end. My hair was still damp in some places otherwise my hair looked pretty. I put my hair in a French twist with of of the front out for work.

A few days later I was very pleased because my hair was stretched; I am a natural.

I will use again.

I do have crimpers which are similar but tighter wave but I never used them on my hair.

they were so damned clunky too lol, just awful to use for me but I'm not good at that soet of thing anyway. I'm kind of afraid about using those new deep wave curlformers i have but I have to try them lol

On break
Wow.

Even though sleeping in them seemed to be an issue, the lady's hair in the video with the Conair deep wave rollers came out really nice!

I don't think these rollers are available anymore, it doesn't seem.

Thx for bumping this thread! I needed that dose of hair p0rn again.

Have you made it to TBL yet?

lol! you crack me up

Ugh, can you believe that practically for half a year and some change I wore my hair straight but never took a length check pic from the back :whyme: smh . But I think I might be right at it. I have a pic of it curly from a month ago stretching it. Ok so nvm, I have one but it's not good at all lol. Not very clear and my mirror lookin like....:nono: I'll add it too, just don't judge lol It's from last November

I might straighten my hair this winter but that "might" is kinda strong...haha But actually thank you for asking! This makes me want to get it together and hurry up and get there (TBL)! Got me motivated now :brucelee:

I knew you'd be there or practically there. Thank you for sharing updated pix of your beautiful mane!

It looks like, if someone were taking the pix for you, you'd be right at booty-crack, lol. Keep up the good work!

Please don't go through the hassle of straightening on my account. However, if you do please post pix and tag me. @CurlyRy

Oh girl yeah, it was heavy on that might because I can barely do it on my own account/will  hehe (the process lord...:nono: so so long)

And you're right! I don't know why I haven't been asking others to take these pictures -___- but yeah, since I kinda miss my straight hair a tid bit and I'm not nearly as scared as I was to straighten it, I might do it again within six months or so :) (and I'll be sure to tag ya! :yep:)
