Synthroid for Hypothyroidism??

Just a few days ago, i discovered a swollen thyroid gland. I had blood taken a few days ago and an ultrasound on yesterday. I am anxiously awaiting my results but will probably schedule an appointment with an endocrinologist as well.

yodie, how are things going as far as your meds?

removed. Too long. Yodie Pm me. That is if you have a diagnosis. Synthroid is fine, but some find it's not enough. I'm one of them. I have Graves and was give RAI which completely destroyed my thyroid. I find that docs can lecture and tell me how I feel:lol: but I know that the alternatives are better: Adding T 3 such as cytomel and/or switching to westhyroid or naturesthyroid (which people have been using for over 50 years and managed to balance their thyroid despite docs encouraging ppl to switch to synthroid after pharmaceutical companies heavily promoted it).

I mention west or naturesthyroid because armour changed their forumula and now there's tons of complaints. PM me if you have a diagnosis and tell you what I know after dealing with 0% active thyroid, aka a dead thyroid for almost a decade and listening to docs blab and tell me what I SHOULD feel like, versus finding one who finally listened and started helping me to feel almost like normal (with very little hypo symptoms versus before I had severe symptoms. Im talking how you feel)

Talk to you doctor about your concerns. Cytomel is taken along with Synthroid and you need a prescription. Is your doctor a specialist? I had a tumor on my thyroid and they radiated it and of course I went from over active to under active. On the T4 alone, I didn't feel quite right and the armour did the trick but when the government shut down production, it was crazy. If you do the natural thyroid, you need to stock up on it because others told me that it happens every few years. My endo doctor said I might feel better being on Cytomel also and it's been working.

Laurend you have heard of Naturesthyroid and westhyroid? It's like Armour and lots of people are finding it hits the spot. I am 0% active thyroid from RAI. No tumour, I had graves disease which attacks the system and makes the thyroid hyper. Then the goal is for the RAI to get it to normal or just under. Unfortunately it left me severely hypo with 0% or rather to be exact 0.002% (when a doc told me that I just :nono:) active thyroid. What's the point of even telling me about that little percent of a percent:lol:?

^^Forgot to add a compounding pharmacy can make certain that you never run out (even if a formula has changed they can make the old one as they have everything needed there and as pharmacists even have the ingredient list), they can custom make it for you if it's not available. Think of those little mom and pop pharmacies. Also CVS seems to have westhyroid so if you need to go to a chain you can get it.

I take levothyroxine and have taken that and/or synthroid for the past 10+ years. My hair shed but not enough to make a big difference. But my hair changed recently to being very dry and brittle. My endo says that it seems to be due to menopause. My hair was looking anorexic. :ohwell:
Since then, I have been taking Nioxin and Phytophanere (interchangeably), and biotin along with plenty of water, exercise and rest. My hair is getting stronger. I am sure you can find ways to take extra care of your hair no matter the source of the problem. :yep:

I find that intense moisture does the trick for me. After turning severely hypo, I decided to shave my hair. It was pathetic, and so brittle it snapped if the wind blew. I shaved my head, got rid of my relaxer so that it could be in it's strongest state before I heard of big chopping and starting infusing heavy moisture (coconut and also conditioning washing, hotoils, leaving in conditioner overnight) and my hair turned around. I never changed this and that's how I've been able to retain my hair, while growing it out, and keeping it healthy.

Saw an endo specialist today. She said my thyroid labs are all normal, except for my thyroglobulin and wonders if I'm having issues with Celiac disease/gluten. I'm testing for that today. I also have to get an ultrasound of my thyroid and uterus. Endo said thyroid felt okay, but wanted the ultrasound to see if there's something we can't see. I'm getting an ultrasound of my uterus because I always seem to be anemic, however, this was the first lab work that showed I had in range blood counts (thanks to Hemaplex, Yellowdock and some doses of red meat here and there).

So, she's not sure if I even need the Synthroid.
I have to do more research on Celiac and see what they come up with. UGH! I do know whatever type of bread I eat and some other foods make me so bloated and I feel awful with them in my system. It's like I haven't eaten much, so I shouldn't be bloated.

Felt terrible today on the Synthroid. That great feeling that I had must have been a placebo.
whoops looks like you jumped the gun. Hope the tests go well. What are they doing for Celiac test (just curious)...is it more blood work or what?

luckiestdestiny, I have graves disease too. I've only had it for 2yrs. I currently take synthroid after taking the levothyxine. I also did the RAI too. How long did it take to stablize ur thyroid with the right meds. My doc is still trying figure out the current dosage. My thyroid keeps getting either too high or too low. Btw, ur hair is gorg!

ElegantElephant and luckiestdestiny,

I don't really know what's going on with my thyroid. My naturopathic was very expensive. She suggested different natural alternatives, but I couldn't afford to keep going to her. My endo and doc said different things. One report looked like I needed to be on meds (Synthroid) and one report looked fine. It was so confusing. I also had a a nodule in my throat that had to be drained. Very painful.

So, I really don't know. I feel okay, but I don't have insurance anymore. Just makes me wonder if my thyroid has something to do with why my hair NEVER makes real progress.

Just saw this. I will answer in depth via pm when I am near my computer (on my phone now).. However it varies depending on severity of your "drop" to hypo and whether your doctor has it together and really works with the patient.
