First of all, what is fine hair ? (copied on a website):

After studying African American hair in depth, doctors and scientists have found a lot of common features. Hair of African descent is likely to be very curly, dry, and fragile by nature. Those are the more universal characteristics, but obviously every woman's hair isn't the same. One of the most important differences between hair types is one that's often overlooked when discussing ethnic hair and that is strand texture.

Strand texture or diameter refers to the size of each individual strand of hair on your head. That's different than the number of strands on your head. You may have a lot of hair, but each of those hairs can be fine, medium, or thick/coarse. People with fine strands usually have a lot more hair than people with coarse strands. The follicles of fine hair are smaller and more closely packed, so the smaller each strand, the more that can fit on an average-sized head.

This picture shows actual strands of hair that were photographed using a special imaging system. The hair on the left is much finer (or thinner) than the hair on the right. A coarse strand can be 80% thicker than a fine strand.

****PICTURE ON WEBSITE ****

http://www.hairliberty.org/black-hai...ican-hair.html

Strand texture is important because it is closely tied to which products work well for your hair. Differences in strand diameter can result in one person loving a product and another person hating it, especially with regard to leave-in conditioners and stylers. Fine hair requires the most care, so it is important to figure out if your hair falls into that category. Even though ethnic hair needs lots of moisture, using too much product or one that is too heavy can make fine hair look stringy or sparse.

The only foolproof way to determine your hair's diameter is to measure a few strands using a machine similar to the one used for the picture above, but no one gets that exact. See if any of these scenarios sound familiar...

Fine natural hair

•Doesn't hold curls well. You re-twist nightly to keep your curls defined
•Breaks easily, even when you treat it gently and keep it well moisturized.
•Is prone to fly aways and static
•Rarely looks thick enough, even though you have a mass of curls

Fine relaxed hair

•Doesn't hold curls well. You have to roller set to get long lasting curls.
•Breaks easily. Simple combing and brushing results in lots of broken hair.
•Is prone to fly aways and static
•Looks thin through the length, even though your new growth feels thick

Those are just a few things that may characterize fine strands. If you think you have fine or particularly fragile hair, use this tip sheet to remember which products and techniques will work best.

10 tips for fine hair

1) Do a Pre-Wash Oil Treatment before you wash your hair. Over-cleansed hair will be difficult to control.

2) Use a gentle, conditioning shampoo to wash your hair once or twice a week. High quality shampoos help protect your hair from abrasion during the wash process.

3) Use rinse-off conditioners that say “dry” or “damaged” hair not “fine” hair. Conditioners labeled for fine hair are usually too light for African American hair.

4) Experiment with leave-in conditioners and stylers that say “fine” hair on the label. You’ll have to decide if you prefer those over heavier formulas.

5) Comb and brush your hair as little as possible. Fine hair is extremely prone to mechanical damage.

6) Be cautious if you opt for a relaxer. Fine hair does not stand up to chemical treatments as well as thicker hair. Always have the relaxer applied by a professional and follow the Hair Liberty Relaxer Checklist.

7) When you straighten your hair, keep the temperature low. In most cases, it should not be set above 350F. (175 °C)

8) Consider adding a reconstructing treatment to your hair care regimen. Look for conditioners that list protein (e.g. hydrolyzed silk protein) as one of the first five ingredients.

9) Schedule a trim every 6 to 8 weeks. The ends of fine hair may split even if you do your best to avoid that.

10) Be patient if you plan to grow fine hair to long lengths. Its fragility may make retaining length difficult, but not impossible.

LETS GO !!!!!!!!

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!

hair type: Mostly 4A I suppose, nape is 3C, edges are 4XYZ!
length: struggling to make it to full arm pit length
Goal: waist length:grin:
natural/relaxed/texlaxed: natural
porosity (if you know): not a clue - this is the hardest concept for me to comprehend
Reggie: wash weekly (if my schedule permits), DC (overnight or under a dryer), oil rinse then style (normally in flat twist outs)
any hair secret/advice you got ? Oil rinses help me so much

:yay:

hair type: 4 a/b, tightly coiled, frizzy, tangle, ssk and split prone

length: BSB

goal: WHip/ Elbow (around 21 inches)

natural/relaxed/texlaxed: natural

porosity: high porosity but trying to correct it with the use of proteins, ceramides and ACV rinses

regimen:

Living in medium twists.

Few times a week: LCOB; started to incorporate baggying because of winter weather

Once a week or bi weekly: pre shampoo, de-tangle, apply conditioner, de-tangle some more, apply a top layer of light protein conditioner, leave on for 5-10 minutes with shower cap, rinse, oil, leave-in, butter, re-twist.

Once a month: pre shampoo, de-tangle, shampoo, moisturizing DC, protein conditioner, ACV rinse, leave in, oil, butter, twist.

Tips and tricks that work for me: keep hair stretched, layer products on ends to keep them soft supple and tangle free, incorporate protein, use less tools (combs, brushes, heating appliances), work in sections, de-tangle throughly

Older picture but I'm at this length... again. Let's grow!

hair type: super curly/coily 4a
length: brushing BSL
Goal: WL! It might be a pipe dream for me, because just getting to BSL in the back has been a pain, but I'm determined
natural/relaxed/texlaxed :natural
porosity (if you know):
Reggie: I don't have this down yet. I know that HOT with coconut oil before shampooing is helpful, and my hair absolutely can't survive without lots and lots of protein. Other than that I'm still working on it
any hair secret/advice you got ? Just using a lot of protein. I used to be married to Aphogee 2 Step, but I just tried gelatin for the first time and it was really similar. I'm also trying out grape seed oil as a daily sealer, so we'll see if that helps me retain

I'm happy I'm in on this thread
hair type: Fine strand, medium density 3 C spiral curls
length: Armpit length
Goal: waist length
natural/relaxed/texlaxed :natural
porosity (if you know): Normal
Reggie: Shampoo and condition once a week, oil ends and scalp often, use spray bottle of water to refresh and style.
any hair secret/advice you got ? Low manipulation and lots of oiling.

Froreal3

haulin hard in the paint
hair type: 4 a/b

length: BSL

Goal: MBL/WL (original goal was MBL, which I will be happy with...but I'm aiming for wl to see if I can). I have about 2.5 to 3 inches away from MBL. Can't believe I'm so close.

natural/relaxed/texlaxed : Natural

porosity (if you know): Normal/slightly on higher side

Reggie: shampoo or cowash each week, dc each week, protein dc biweekly to weekly depending on how hair feels. I may spray some Aphogee Green Tea just to give myself a boost when I don't feel like a full treatment. Protective style with twists/buns 99% of the time. Moisturize and seal my ends every other day. Heavy seal my ends often w/butters. I dust about 1/4 to 1/2 off quarterly.

any hair secret/advice you got? Don't underestimate the protein yall. Protective styles are a must for ultimate retention.

hair type: 4b (a tiny 4a at the back) + i seem normal to high density

length: grazing apl (after a good cut from setback)

Goal: wl (short time goal beautiful bsl)

natural/relaxed/texlaxed : relaxed since december 2013 (after 6 years natural)

porosity (if you know): i still cant figure this thing out (my hair always floats on the water)

Reggie: still trying to fix this. For the moment : i wash every week (prepoowith oil). I tested last night something great !
prepood with olive oil (not heat), then added cholesterol on top after 1 hour and sat under dryer 15 minutes. + shampoo. shirt dried. I added a tiny of giovanni direct leave in with olive oil. (+ apoghee tea tree when a bit of protein needed).I made 3 sections and twisted. Next day, i added ors moisturizing lotion + sealed with coconut oil(my hair is booooooming) !!!!!!!

i think ive found something good here to make a reggie.

any hair secret/advice you got ? dust regulary and scalp massage as soon as you have a few minuted on your couch or your bed !!! its stimulates growth for sure. That grew back my edges without really using the castor oil as supposed to.

picture for those wanting to share a starting pic :sometime later when i feel comfortable with it (still trying to fill in the crown)

I took a moment the other day to appreciate how beautiful fine hair really is. No matter how kinky, you can always have that beautiful, delicate look to your hair. Fine hair also looks awesome when short, and when it's long, it is so impressive. Fine hair can be silky, coarse, wispy, deceptively fluffy and big like a cloud or sleek.

im kind of excited. i can see my new groWth and im happy! yayy whats coming out of my head is pretty good for the moment (seems to grow normally). i feel like my front and back areas grow more than the croWn. those parts are looser too.

i want to stretch for long also because on fine hair it seems hard to see the demarcation line between relaxed and new growtj.

Im in!!

All my hair stats are in my siggy except:

Goal: BSL by Dec 2014
Regimen: prepoo, poo, tea-coconut milk rinse, DC 1X week. Henna 2X month (roots only). Im gonna start using just sulfate free poo and regular poo 1X month to clarify. M&S nightly. Be sure to stop being lazy and DC after monthly henna and fenugreek treatments. Will get out of my comfort zone be stopping the weekly flat ironing and do more protective styling. I am yarn braiding again this weekend.

I have learned that my oil prepoos, tea rinse and DC combo works best on dry hair before washing. I usually use a protein DC at this time, wash, then follow up with a moisturizing DC. I also do pink Australian clay DCs when my hair needs moisture balance.

Will try to post a starting pic tomorrow.

I LOVE this HHJ!!

Yes coolsista-paris. I remember from my relaxed days it was hard to tell until the rare times I was into a at least 2 months stretch. I also remember the demarcation getting very fragile and had to relax right at 8 weeks or there was lots of breakage at the demarcation which thinned out my hair a lot.

im gonna watch carefully how my hair acts... im now at 11 weeks post now. oh gosh already!!! yayyy . but im still waiting cause i want to self relax and i need to tell the difference between relaxed and ne growth.
i need to dc frequently (1 a week at least)... manipulate my hair very slowly..... i mostly finger detangle. that comb does not go through the new growth.

I've been noticing the same thing with my hair recently. The longest layer of my hair reaches to my bra and beneath the bones of my shoulder blades. My crown area...not so much. I'm not sure how to combat this. I don't want to cut :ohwell:

Thanks! I have to just stick with it and stop jumping on bandwagons. Texturizing I think is the best thing Ive ever done for my hair. Its no longer flat to my head like when I was relaxed bone straight. It looks and feels thicker. I am 5 weeks post today so think I will texturize TU at 12 weeks. I stretched to about 16 weeks last time but I don't think I retained anything. I will also focus more on the crown area this time bc thats where my hair is more difficult to straighten.

I LOVE this HHJ!!

dont cut. just dust the hair. baby the crown more that the rest.

Dont put your buns at the crown. (that broke my crown severely) !!!!

Im also tempted in cutting my hair again to catch up the crown but that will be too much. My hair is near apl .. the crown has parts at nl ! im so annoyed at myslef for not noticing earlier....but i will see.

On this fine hair when i wear it down with product in it , there are see through parts because of the missing volume at the crown.

This is al so fustrating
