Why do you want long hair...(kinda long)

Not only do i want long hair because I feel it would make me look prettier and feel sexier but one of my main reasons is to prove some people wrong about black hair, I want everyone to know that black girls do not have to be mixed to have long flowing healthy hair and that a weave is not our only alternative to having long healthy looking hair, Good luck to everyone on this wonderful journey to healthy Longer hair

Same here, I had heathly, thick long hair as a child and screwed it up when I became the one responsible for taking care of it in about 7th grade or so. It's a personal challenge to get it back to where it was....even healthier at that!

I want long hair because
1. pure vanity
2. just to see if i can do it
3. long hair covers a world of woes (ie i can look real rough)
but let the hair flow and viola, suddenly less rough
4. options options options, What can you do with hair that long

I have 2 main reasons:

#1 - I have never had long hair. I've never even had shoulder-length hair! So, this has always been a project for me. I have so many ppl to show off my long hair to /images/graemlins/wink.gif.

#2 - To wear a bun. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif Seriously, I almost cringe w/ envy at ppl who can just put their hair up in a beautiful bun when they're tired of wearing it down.

Long hair just seems alot easier to me! And I want that whole "low-maintence cool and pretty" look. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

"By growing my hair I am proving to myself and others, that black women can have long hair."

Yeah, I agree with everything you said Dannie_19. In a way the very statement you said above has been the impetus for me to grow my hair longer than it's ever been. THere are many reasons I have for wanting to grow my hair long. Firstly, and most importantly of all, I WANT healthier hair. I want THICKER hair. I want my hair to thrive. I feel like all my life I haven't really known what to do with my hair, how to take care of it, etc. Sometimes my hair has suffered due to that.

Another reason for growing my hair long is because I do want to prove to other people that it is a MYTH that black women (even those who aren't "mixed") CAN and DO grow LONG hair. My mom and sister currently sometimes tease me about how much I wash my hair ("black people aren't supposed to wash their hair every week" blah blah blah). They just roll their eyes when I tell them of what I've read about how to take care of black hair. Well...I'll prove them wrong! When my hair is growing like a weed, they'll wonder what I'm doing then! lol*

Another thing, I do believe that too many women (even black women) simply don't think that black hair can grow that long. It's this common "myth" and misconception about black women. Where I live, if a black woman just happens to have long hair, many people think her hair is a "weave". I have to admit, most of the time it is. But sometimes it's NOT! When my hair grows to the length I want it to, I want people to see me and ask me how to go grow their own hair so that I can "share the knowledge"! haha.

Honestly??? So I can flip it as I walk past the counter at Neiman's and show that we can do it too! LOL

Seriously, I think I look better w/longer hair (although I've always wanted a Halle Berry cut). The shortest I've had it is a chin-length bob, and I was told it made my neck look too long and my body too skinny.

I also like the option of wearing ponytails/buns. I hate to do my hair, which is why protective styles have always worked for me.

I had long relaxed hair and now I am trying to see how long my natural will grow. I don't even think about trying to show other's that yes, AA hair can grow long.

Like msportugal said "pure vanity". I love to see long healthy hair and I've wanted it for so long. My hair has never fell on my shoulders. It would be wonderful to finally experience that sensation.

I want long hair because I never had it and think that long hair is beautiful.

1)Want to get back to where I was before the Halle Berry Chop of 1993...lol

2)I like the versatility/styling options of longer hair. I like the look of it. I like the way it looks on me. Even nicer to achieve that look without a weave.

3)One day want to flip it in somebody's face on the train. No, seriously. I just want to see if I can do it.

Most importantly, I want HEALTHY, longer hair.

First I can say without a doubt that my goal of long hair has absolutely nothing to do with getting more attention

But I will confess that my desire does have a little to do with kicking that stereotype about us not being able to have long, healthy, beautiful hair in the teeth. I grew up with those slurs and it would do my heart good to prove them wrong.

My goal of long hair is more about what I want for me. Long healthy hair speaks of two things that I want for myself and want people to know about me:

1. I am a healthy
2. I am patient!

Like a lot of women, who grew up with fairy tales of princesses with long, beautiful hair, I wanted to but could never picture myself as such. Now as an older woman, I am claiming what I want and if I only end up with incredibly beautiful and healthy not-so-long hair, so be it. Healthy radiant hair speaks volumes about a person, does it not? /images/graemlins/smile.gif

And from what I have read here, with the right care I can have long, soft, shining, strong hair. I am off to a good start: in just this past month, my hair has made an amazing turn around. And yes people, I am stoked beyond words. /images/graemlins/clap.gif

In 3 years it is my goal to be looking in the mirror at LB with luxurious hipbone length hair. Let the naysayers feast on that! /images/graemlins/grin.gif

haha.. Yeah, I can't wait to do the "flip" thing too! lol*

Yep, I definitely want to nip that little stereotype about black women's hair in the bud. And I want to be able to do it without even having "nice hair". I grew up around black people who always liked to talk about some black girls who had "nice straight hair", while the rest of us had "nappy" hair. Well, I want to prove that I'm nappy naturally, but my hair CAN and WILL Grow to great lengths with the RIGHT care! Ha! Take that!

I've missed LHCF!
Because it's pretty when it is healthy and well-maintained (trimmed, etc). Cause I want to show that type 4 ladies can grow their hair if they were patient and used the right care and products. Because I am young, and what better time to have flowing, gorgeous hair /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I still want the same as I stated earlier this year, healthy, beautiful hair. As my hair is growing, I now notice certain looks I get /images/graemlins/ooo.gif, especially if I'm among all white women and I have the longest hair in the room(that's happened a lot lately). White men have a different reaction...

Ahh I remember the first time that happened to me. Can you say /images/graemlins/shocked.gif !!

I'm not sure if I posted in this thread earlier, but I have a new reason for wanting extra long hair. This girl at my school was harassing me for not constantly straightening my edges. Mind you if I divided my hair into 4 quadrants, one of those quadrants has more hair than her whole head and more length. So now in addition to just liking long hair (and needing to cover my big head, lol)I want it to prove that healthy hair care habits pay off.

I want long hair now because I had it as a child, then when Halle and Toni came out with those cute little cuts, I sported those for a long time... almost 10 years.

Now I just want to challenge myself not to cut just to see how long it will get.

I actually prefer short hair.

I fell off the wagon a bit a cut about three inches or so in November. It's hard not to cut.

Or have long hair for those who have achieved their goals.

When I first asked myself this question, I kinda made myself uncomfortable. The surface response would be that yes, I would receive more attention from men... and women. Or maybe because I secretly belived the whole good hair/bad hair thing. But as I dug deeper, I realized that my hair is just another form oppression. Because in my mind I really believed that my hair couldn't grow. Not only that, but everything I was doing was keeping it from growing. I am so happy that there are other women who refuse to be locked into a cycle. For a lot of us its not about long hair, but the knowledge of how to care for it. Black hair doesn't have to be dry and brittle and break. Black women don't have to hide underneath weaves or feel self concious about their hair anymore. By growing my hair I am proving to myself and others, that black women can have long hair.

I notice alot of women on the board have careers and are smart and well spoken. Lets continue to shatter myths about people of color and our community. This board is proof that by educating ourselves and working together we will excel.(Even if it is about our hair! <img src="http://st1m.longhaircareforum.com/images/smilies/cool.gif" alt="" />)

[/ QUOTE ]

....Because long hair/hair is the beauty of a woman (as my father always says) and I agree with him. Once I cut my hair short, and although it looked cute, after a while I wanted it long/longer again.

Also, my hair always grew to about shoulder length but no longer than that, so I want or wanted to prove to myself and others that black women can grow long hair too. Oh, and as a child I wasn't lucky enough to have my hair grow down my back, even though I am sure it could have. It was always easier for my hair just to be cut short into a little afro with a parting on the side /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif

When I tell some people that I am going to grow my hair to mid back (shoulder strap length) they look at me as though it's impossible. So, one reason is because I love long hair and I think it's beautiful.....I mean I still have all the hair I cut off years back when I got the Halle Berry short cut, and another reason is to prove that as black women we can have our very own beautiful, long hair without the aid of weaves, extensions and false hair in general. /images/graemlins/clap.gif

I hope this makes sense. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
