Have you considered donating your hair to Locks of Love. I am currently bunning and hair is about shoulder length. A friend at the gym knows I'm growing it out and wondered if I'd consider donating to Locks of Love? Thoughts?

Stop frontin, you know me!
Why do ppl think that just becuz a person have long hair, they have to automatically cut it off and donate. I personally won't be donating to locks of love becuz I'm taking whatever I grow to the grave with me:look:

I think its a good idea. I have heard that there is a shortage of African American hair types , because black women with long hair raarely cut it off since its so hard to grow...

HairCrush has so much hair that the shaved part would be enough to donate!

I've always wanted to grow long hair and donate it so some kid could have a afrolicious wig. I mean if I can get to waist length once I should be able to so it again and if not it my hair would be a worthy sacrifice

Funny, you would ask OP:spinning:. DD and I were having this discussion yesterday. If I can maintain hair longer than MBL, I would def consider donating for the reasons Lady Kay 21 mentioned. We'll see:scratchch.

Are you relaxed or natural? I was told that they do not accept chemically processed hair.

Interesting that you mentioned this. I am originally from Louisiana and we did the same thing. Voo doo was common practice back in the day and reportedly folks would get hair from people that they wanted to cast a spell on. Not sure if they are still burning the hair but I bet they still practice this.

I have too. I heard two different things.

One, that they throw away and don't even use the majority of the hair that is donated to them anyways. Which is weird?

And two, that sometimes they sell the donated hair for profit. Since they (L of L) got the hair for free/donated they make a profit by selling it to the wig makers for cheap. The wig makers make the wigs but sell it for thousands online. Nothing gets donated to the lil chirrens like it should. They make money off of free hair.

I dunno if any of that is true! I know my friend donated (she is from Sudan, Africa) and had hair down her back (it grows freakishly fast). So I hope...no…I know about 10 kids could have gotten a wig out of it that deal lol. I really hope Tameka from Crenshaw, CA didn't pay somebody $1,000 online for a #1 black Extra-Virgin Sudan-Remy Silky LaceFront courtesy of my friend.

I would love to donate my hair to someone who has a terminal diease. Unless you've been diagnosed with a terminal diease, you have no idea how something like having hair can make a world of difference.

Locks of Love sells the hair to people who will eventually grow their hair back. If you have a condition where your hair will never grow back, you will receive a free one.

A lot of people donate to LofL without finding out what they will and will not accept. So I too believe a lot is thrown out. People/groups have press releases and media come out but in fact the hair can not be used. At a ball game once I saw a a lot of men in line to get hair cuts to donate to LofL, most had between 1-3 inches:nono:

I'm too vain. I have no problem donating money to charitable causes or running for a cure and all that but I'll keep my hair on my head. Especially when it gets long.

If your friend heard you are trying to grow your hair out, why would she ask you if want to cut it off and donate it? That sounds counterproductive...it's like, just because I have a closet full of shoes, doesn't mean I "have" to donate a pair if I don't want to...stop trying to make other people feel guilty for no reason...IDK why women have to feel pressured into cutting off their hair and donating it when the majority of the hair is unusable anyway. Cutting off your hair in vain....

Natural again ... this time for good!
I would be more likely to give them a monetary donation (if they accept those). But ummmmmm ... I'm keepin' my hair. :look:

Nah. Well one I never had enough hair to consider donating, but two, I dont see a need to have human hair, it's kinda creepy+ they have come a very long way with synthetic.

I've actually always wanted to, but my hair isn't long enough yet. They do take relaxed hair but not double processed hair. So you can't donate dyed relaxed hair. When I get hip length one day hopefully, I think I'll do it!

I agree. When I was little my great grandma did my hair. She would ALWAYS burn all shed hair in fear that it would get into the wrong hands.

umm...the majority of black women want indian/malaysian/ fill in non-afro textured "exotical" hair type.. so i feel like my kinky tresses would go straight in the dumpster. when all is said and done it will have taken me a good 2 1/2 to 3 years to reach my final goal. i'd hate for my hair to wind up in the trash. now ask me to donate blood or even to through the painful process of bone marrow transplant to SAVE someone's life, i'd be more inclined.

Everytime i comb my hair out and my mom sees it in the garbage she freaks out. She told me to throw it in the toilet and flush it. I guess because of obeia. Anyways yes i had a co-worker grow out her hair and donate it to locks of love. I asked her about it. She was asian btw,the hair can't be processed in anyway and i think that might include perms. And they do sell the hair which i was shocked at. I thought they were non-profit but i guess not.

A lot has been written about Locks of Love not doing what people think they do; most of the donated hair ends up in the trash:

http://badhairday.typepad.com/bad_hair_day/2006/07/locks_of_love_i.html
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/06/fashion/06locks.html?_r=1&pagewanted=all

Personally, I think that there are much better ways to help people with cancer than to cut off your hair when it most likely will end up in the trash. In the NYTimes article, the Locks of Love staff member even admits that they would much prefer monetary donations.

If there was a way that I could track and make sure that the hair got to a person in need, I would do it in a heartbeat. Jesus says what we do for even the least of His children we do for Him. My great grandmother used to burn my hair as well for my protection. However, since God has power over all, I fear no voodoo, witch etc. If someone reallly thinks they can gain power over me through discarded hair, they can have at it.

Same thing in our family. You would never see hair in any of our combs. My grandfather was the pastor of the only black church in town (I know country) and we did/do not believe in black magic but we sure did not take any chances.

kind of off topic but, do any ladies/men here participate in St. Baldrick's? I feel like for those who BC, this would be a great cause. The concept is to shave your head to help raise money to fund childhood cancer research.

Sometimes I wish I would have done that instead of going scissor happy by myself. Unlike L.o.L, the mission is quite clear. In my head I picture all the hair boards (bold and those seeking to BC) having a big meetup in the name of St. Baldrick's....le sigh.

K, back to L.o.L.

I would prefer to learn how to ventilate, and create my own custom wigs to give out than to donate blindly to a place I'm not fully confident in. But, I haven't been faced with the decision yet really since I've not been natural long.
