What do you do RIGHT AFTER the relaxer is rinsed out of your hair?

I have posted before saying that I am not completely satisfied w/ the stylist that I am going to. The stylist is a "I'm not rinsing the relaxer out until it starts burning, so your hair will get straight!" kind of stylist. I time 5 minutes after she applies and lies and say it is burning for her to take it out.

Anyway, after she rinses it out, she shampoos it twice then puts some conditioner on it for about 30 seconds then rinses that out and proceeds to roller set w/ some glossifier and setting lotion. After I get from under the dryer she sometimes puts some oil in it and sometimes doesn't. My main concern is that I am only getting 30 seconds of conditioning after the relaxer is rinsed out.

Please help me out and tell me your relaxing process from beginning to end because I feel like I'm about to lose my hair if I keep going to her. I use to self relax, but started going to a salon about the last 4 times I have had a relaxer after I got color to make sure I wasn't overlapping which I also thinks she does because she goes about 3 inches down the shaft when I def. don't see that much of new growth.

Uggggghhhhhhhhh.....please help a sista out! I am getting so frustrated w/ the lack of stylists in my area!

I follow SouthernGirlz self relaxing steps.
After I rinse out the relaxer, I apply Vitale positive conditioner, let that sit for 5 minutes, then add my neutralizing shampoo let that sit for 5 minutes and then rinse. I repeat the neutralizing step again let sit for 5 minutes, rinse, regular shampoo, rinse, apply Le kair cholesterol for 10 minutes, rinse and then deep condition for about 30-1 hour. Then rinse with lukewarm water and final rinse with cold water...I know alot but hey that's haircare. Then proceed as usual.

I haven't done that yet, but I'm planning to, except I'm going to use Fiberguard by Affirm.

1- rinse out relaxer
2- apply neutralizer mousse, let it sit for 5 minutes. Rinse.
3- apply neutralizer mousse a second time, let it sit for 10 minutes. Rinse.
4- apply neutralizer mousse a third time, let it sit for 1 minute. Rinse.
5- apply conditioner and let sit for 30 minutes (minimum).

After rinsing out the relaxer thoroughly, I shampoo with the neutralizing shampoo very well, 3 times.

I shampoo with my regular shampoo once, then rinse well.

Then I deep condition for 30-45 minutes with a cap. After that I proceed with the rest of my regimen.

only 3 minutes of conditioning? girl you are right to worry. right after i wash out the relaxer i usually shampoo 2 or 3 times with neutralizing shampoo. then i put a very strong protein reconstructor (usually DRC 28) in my hair, cover it with a plastic cap and sit under a dryer for 20 minutes. after i rinse that out i do a moisturizing conditioner under the dryer for another 20 minutes. after i rinse that out, i put in my leave-ins and style. that's all.

1.) Rinse relaxer thoroughly

2.) Apply Aphogee 2 min Keratin Reconstructor for 5 mins

3.) Apply neutralizing shampoo for 5 mins undisturbed, rinse and repeat until color alarm indicates its okay to proceed. This is the lengthiest step and usually takes 30-45 mins to complete.

4.) Deep condition 30-45 mins w/ heat, rinse w/ cool water

This is really helping me too. I've never thought it was possible for me to self relax but the stylists i've been going to are not doing the steps that members are listing. Maybe I should cross on over...Anyone else wanna share their self-relaxing process?

Okay...ya'll r really making me worry. She leaves the conditioner on for 30 seconds And that's it. To make it worse, she doesn't even put any on the backside of my hair because she doesn't lift it up off of the sink. Okay...I guess I am going to have to officially go back to self relaxing. I have been going to here for a yr now!
Why don't you talk to your stylist about what you want her to do when you get your hair relaxed? Unless you really want to self relax...

This is what I do, but I don't have a particular reconstructor that I use. I just use those with Keratin. I have been using Joico products keratin containing conditioner these days.

Also, my neutralizing stop never takes that long, but my hairis much short though.

Also, I am asking this question to those who self relax and those who go to a salon. If u go to a salon, what does the stylist do after he/ she rinses out the relaxer?

Hmmm, I have some Joico K-pac reconstructor too.... I have used it on regular days and it doesn't feel like it does anything for me strengthwise. To me, it feels lighter than aphogee's keratin reconstructor. :ohwell: Maybe I should give the Joico a try after the relaxer and see if that helps. :scratchch

I am only using the K-Pak because I just HAVE to use up all my products. I have way to much stuff and I feel silly buying new ones to try. Once I use up all my stuff, I am going to try new things. I used the Aphogee Keratin Reconstuctor packets once and really loved it.

Anyone every tried Keraphix as an after relaxer reconstructor? I have a unused big liter of that, too!

Yeah, I bought 2 K-pac bottles on a clearance and I'm trying to use them up too.   Just trying to find a better use for them instead of collecting dust under the sink. So maybe using them after the relaxer will bring out their full potential.

For those that apply stuff before the neutralizing shampoo...why do you do so? What does it do for your hair?

I would like to know this also.

I also had a stylist that did that 30 second conditioning mess for relaxers and never liffted my hair up or put conditioner at the crown. Kept my crown section broken off for over a year and at ear length / chin length forever and a day ! She also was a fan of shampooing only 2 times after a relaxer. I would actually have to "plead" with her for a deep conditioner. Terrible---I know ! I stopped going to her--found LHCF and my hair is so happy !

Awesome thread ladies! I am *thinking* about getting a relaxer in August and this thread will be extremely helpful.

thanks ladies

I would highly advise you to stop going to her immediately! if you like her personally then she can be your friend, but you haven't given yourself not 1 reason to use her as a stylist. If a stylist has bad haircare practices (but maybe can style her butt off), then there is nothing that you can say to convince her that you know what you are talking about when it comes to YOUR hair. If i've told you once or twice what to do...then i'm not wasting my breathe anymore if you can't follow my instructions...I'm finding a new stylist! that is the attitude that you should have. I would suggest finding a franchise like hair cuttery or jcpenney. and going there...for some reason the stylists they actually listen to what you say and they do a better job at the relaxing process. i guess they have a boss to answer to and they aim for customer service. I go to the hair cuttery, i have been to a few and i have always had a good relaxer process (after discussing it first with them of course). I now go to 1 stylist at the haircuttery, his process is to:
base my scalp,
put cholestorol on my ends,
apply perm ONLY to the roots, starting from the crown area. He does it so fast, he's done in 12mins flat (yes he times himself). When I look inthe mirror i can only see the perm on maybe 1 inch of hair or even less.
leave relaxer on for about 4-5mins (I use mizani so it usualy is burning by now).
Rinse out the relaxer good (for about 4mins).
apply neut poo, rinse, apply neut poo and sit for 5 mins,
rinse really well for about 5mins, apply the poo again and rinse well.
Then he applies a deep cond and sits me under a warm dryer for 25mins.

And i'd also encourage you to tell your stylist that you have fragile hair, and also that you do not desire bonestraight hair. So he would understand that he doesn't have to do all of this smoothing and processing for a long time. I will follow this man to the edge of the world! And another good thing is usually a franchis is cheaper than your average black salon.

After the relaxer is rinsed out of my hair, a deep conditioner is applied to my hair. I only get my touch-ups done at the salon.

After all the knowlege gained, my relaxer process is
  • Apply relaxer,
  • Rinse 5minutes after smoothing, Taking care to get all relaxer out.
  • Put Motions silk protein conditioner...leave in for 10mins
  • Rinse out
  • Wash hair thoroughly with Motions neutralising poo then rinse,
  • Condition again for 2mins with Motions Silk Protein Con
  • Final Torough rinse
My advice: get a stylist that listens to what you want for your hair. My stylist aint perfect but good thing is when i argue and give her the evil eye:mad:, she does what i want.

My stylist does basically what you described, except my hair is washed with the neutralizing shampoo three times or twice with neutralizing shampoo once with regular shampoo. I always coat my hair with a protein conditioner and oil prior to getting it relaxed, so I don't mind the 30 second condition. I've heard from other stylists that it is not good to deep condition right after a relaxer with heat. Their rationale was that the cuticle is opened with the relaxer and then closed with the neutralizing shampoo. Deep conditioning with heat reopens the cuticle which can eventually can cause damage. I don't know how true that is, that's just what I heard.

1. Rinse relaxer.
2. Spray on Duo-Tex, comb through. Leave on for 5 minutes.
3. Neutralizing Shampoo, leaving 2nd lather on for 5 minutes. Then do two more quick lathers.
4. Aphogee Keratin Protein for 5 minutes, followed by.
5. Emu Oil Conditioner mixed with Jojoba oil for moisturizing deep treatment under heat cap for 20 mintues. Rinse out.
6. Air dry loose, apply a dab of creamy leave-in.
7. Lightly Caruso curl. Then, shake! :)

This and different variations of it may be the best advice on the board for chemically relaxed hair!

My hair dressers where on top of this in LA. I got to GA and hey were slack, a lot of them. But that was years ago. Now I'm relieved to know I can do it myself, I have a choice!
