Hopeless rollersetters, mesh may be the answer

I used setting lotion - the lottabody kind that needs to be diluted with water. It seems to help straighten out my natural hair.

Someone asked a question about how you get the rods to stay in. Here's a close up of the back of the set. I used rods. See where the arrow is, there are two grooves on every roller to hold the rubber band. If you twist the band to the next groove, it will keep the rod in place. HTH. :)

Yes that was me, I wanted to know how to keep the rods from hanging off my head:lol: Thanks for sharing:)

I just went back to mesh rollers after a while of not using them. I don't use the pins because I can never get them to act right. I use the same metal clips I use with my magnetic rollers. You may want to give that a try.

I was surprised at how well my hair did, and of course the drying time was great. Under my pibbs on 40, I used the black annie 1 1/2 inch rollers and my hair dried in about 1hr 15 minutes. Mind you, 40 degrees is rather low and my hair length is armpit so that's really well. My magnetics take about 2 hr 15 minutes with the same size rollers. I did use end papers because I like my ends sleek.

The only down fall I always have is the mesh lines. I always get them, but honestly, you would have to be all up in my head to see them. And if you are that close, you deserve to see them. :) Happy setting.

ETA: Now I remember why I stopped using them. For some reason my sets don't last as long as with magnetic. Oh well, so much for giving it another try.

That is why I continue to use magnetic rollers, the sets last longer. I used mesh rollers before and did not like them at all. I love magnetic rollers because they give me a sleek/smooth look, plus I don't want to go thru all the trouble of using end papers, it's enough for me to just roll up my hair and pin it:lol: I'm lazy when it comes to setting my hair, washing and conditioning isn't a problem just the finishing part:perplexed

Also, does anyone know of a place online that sells these? I need a place that ships to APO addresses and won't charge me an arm and a leg for shipping. TIA.

So which ones are better??? Are there any ladies that have had experience with the plastic and the wire ones?
The metal ones dry a lot faster. I like them better. Cause I am always in a rush. But the plastic ones are ok too. I need to take a pic of my roller bag cause I must have just about every roller known to man.

Natural again ... this time for good!
Oh, I'm sooooo glad that someone bumped this old thread. I just rollerset my hair on magnetic last night and as usual, it came out mediocre at best. I'm going to try these mesh rollers and see if they give me better results.

Thank you so much for the feedback lady. I see that I'm gonna have to order some wire ones. :yep:

Wow, that is a really good idea. It would be a whole lot better to actually KNOW what you are doing before your hair is sopping wet...:look:.

THANKS!!!

Thanks for bumping this thread!!! I am a mess at rollersetting- lets say Ive tried it 3 times and still havent gotten it right! On Christmas- I swear I looked like the illegitimate child of Buckwheat and Bozo! I will go to my local BSS and find these rollers- It makes sense to attempt a set on dry hair. Why did I never think of that. :scratchch
Thanks ladies!

This is the very best way to learn how to roller set hair, place pins and clips, etc. :yep:

once you get the pins in at the correct angle, which i put the pin in at the bottom and angle it toward my scalp like this \ the pin will lay on your scalp, it won't hurt unless you are digging in your scalp with the pin, but you will have no problem. hth

I think I will give mesh rollers a try and see if my rollersets turn out any better.

They are ok now with the magnetic rollers but not as good as they could be. I kept telling myself that it was because I was new at it and needed more practice, and while that may be true, the rollers may also be a factor.

Question: How do you ladies keep your rollersets curly and bouncy? If I rollerset in the morning, by that night most of my curls have fallen. I don't really want to be wasting 3 and 4 hours doing my hair if that's how it will look a few hours later.:ohwell: What am I doing wrong?

I will definitely try some mesh rollers...I cowashed and did a rollerset yesterday....my hair is still not dry....and I always get snags from the metal clips I use to set my magnetic rollers....this is a must try for me, I think it might save me a lot of broken hairs

I'm a big fan of rollersetting, never tried the mesh rollers. I think the art is in how you roll and having a good bonnet dryer. I just purchase a new dryer and use my standard magnetic rollers and my hair came out fine, but I've been doing rollersets for about six years now!

I may branch out and try mesh just to see what the hype is about. Thanks!

Be forewarned...mesh rollers will not give you a smooth rollerset like magnetic rollers. Your set will come out ok, but you will have crinkles throughout your hair.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree. It depends on the type of mesh roller you are using. I have Annie Wire mesh rollers and the Diane mesh rollers and hands down, the Annie wire mesh rollers were better as the surface is smooth. My hair came out just as silky and smooth as a set done with Magnetics. The Diane mesh rollers left a little texture (equal to the texture of the roller) but only on the hair that was directly on the roller and it only happened in certain parts of my hair; not all. The rest of my hair that was wrapped around the hair that was directly on the roller didn't have the texture of the mesh. Also, it wasn't that noticable because my hair was still smooth after I wrapped my hair. Nonetheless, the Annie wire mesh rollers work better for me since they helped me achieve a completely smooth and silky set.

ETA: I also want to that I believe technique plays a role on how smooth your set will come out.

I think you just helped me decide which ones to get.... Thanks:grin:

Nixx I agree with you on the annie rollers, they seem to be a little more stiff yet still smoother than the diane rollers. I still can get a smooth set with my 1.5" dianes though.

I personally prefer the plastic mesh rollers(or french mesh rollers if you can get your hands on them). I tried the annie brand a year or two ago and was disappointed. I had a hard time getting my hair to slick onto the roller so I didn't even bother and threw them away.

How are you guys avoiding getting breakage from the pins? I used to use mesh rollers because I could get my new growth much straighter but I did a rollerset a couple of days ago and when I took the rollers out I noticed a lot of broken hair about the diameter of the roller. It seems like pushing pins through your hair would cause breakage, especially when the hair is still wet and fragile. So how can you use pins and still not get breakage?
