Gospel Artist Canton Jones sings about sex...

My husband and I enjoyed Canton's gospel singles; and he is a member and worship leader at Creflo Dollars Church where we were members. When my husband was looking to purchase one of his latest cds he scrolled down and found an album released in 2008 with a group called Slic&Faint there is a song called Baby Oooh, which I could not listen to in its entirety ( he talking about having sex with someone, it could be with his wife--not sure) and Take flight where he uses profanites. I was hoping it was not him, but at any rate I just wanted to know if this would confuse someone young in the faith? Or offend you as a women in general.
Much Love,
Shandell

Matthew 6
24″You can’t worship two gods at once. Loving one god, you’ll end up hating the other. Adoration of one feeds contempt for the other. You can’t worship God and Money both.

It's not only potentially confusing to the youth**and some adults** but it is wrong. You can't do both.

It's not a good witness, especially for 'babe's in Christ and for those who are still 'struggling' in their 'flesh'.

To this brother I would say...

"How long will you 'halt' between two opinions? If God be God serve Him.... if baal (the world) be god, serve him." But you can't have it both ways.

Choose..... or just step down from the Ministry's front line until you're fully developed in Christ Jesus and ready to be an effective leader.

Wow - has it been confirmed that it is really him?

Unfortunately, it is the Canton Jones he produced this in 2008 and it was released on 4/4/08 and if you look at the Slic and Faint website they clearly state it is Gospel Great Canton Jones. I know his voice and I was still like are you serious? I sincerely hope he has asked God to forgive him. My husband and I will not be purchasing any more of his music for awhile, however.

This question and topic is kind of an endless loop on so many levels.

So Canton Jones made one erotic sex song (that we know of). Clearly this record was not marketed to the mainstream gospel music audience. Why? Obviously because his core audience would not receive it, esp. if there's profanity in the lyrics.

Should a gospel artist/gospel entertainer (depending on which title is most convienient for them at the time/situation) be judged for their ENTIRE BODY of music or just one song?

Was it that the particular record was about sex or that it had profanity in it?

Is it alright/acceptable if the song was about sex with his wife?

Let's really unpack and explore the problems and issues around this thing and how gospel music (in my opinion) has become just as commercialized as other musical genres and has, for the most part, lost its sacredness.

I listen mainly to gospel music and for a number of years have reduced how much I actually buy because most of it doesn't appeal to me anymore, REGARDLESS of the perceived/observed lifestyle of the artist. It's confusing and I'd like to know the wisdom here.

For example: Kirk Franklin is one of the MOST TALENTED songwriters in gospel. Have several of his albums. Then his scandal came out re. pornography. And after that, he released "Fight of my Life" and from some of the songs I've heard, it's classic Kirk... some upbeat tunes, some worship songs, etc. Very authentic in terms of what he went through.

We need to understand that these gospel artists are first HUMAN and they are not apologetic for doing what they want to do, whether it pleases their audiences or not. So instead of us wondering if their music is gonna be confusing, we need to see their music for what it is and govern ourselves accordingly. If it is not godly or has an underlying spirit of lust/perversion, then we need to AVOID IT and guard our hears and minds and ears and eyes (and those of the vulnerable among us, e.g., young people). Period. No more explanation needed.

Foxyscholar,
In response to your comment about us being just “humans” I totally disagree with the how religious people always want to throw that term around to justify sin. As people of God we are not just humans, the word of God clearly states that we were created in His likeness and image (Gen 1:26) and Psalm 8:5 says He created us a little lower than Himself. If Christians are just humans who are susceptible to living a life of sin then what separates the light from the darkness?
1 Peter 1:16 (NIV): Be holy because I am holy—this is not an option it is a command.
1 Peter 2:9 (NIV): But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to the God that you may declare praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.
As ministers of the gospel, people entrusted with such a mantle must conduct themselves in accordance to the Word of God period. The Word of God is and will remain the final authority for the true believer.

He's committing spiritual adultery; in bed with the 'world' than coming home to his wife (the Ministry) and passing the world's spirit onto her and their children ( members of the body of Christ).

Shandell: let me be VERY CLEAR on what I DID NOT SAY.

1. I did not say "just human". I said "first human", which I now see as problematic but for different reasons, not to:

2. JUSTIFY any sin WILLINGLY COMMITTED BY ANYBODY.

3. The PROBLEM with your premise that comprises this thread is this: one so called "religious person" attempting to LABEL and CONFORM another (possibly) "religious person" to their own interpretation of appropriate standards of conduct.

What exactly is a "religious person", by the way?

Please reread my post again and address the questions I put forth:

--Should a gospel artist/gospel entertainer (depending on which title is most convienient for them at the time/situation) be judged for their ENTIRE BODY of music or just one song?

--Was it that the particular record was about sex or that it had profanity in it?

--Is it alright/acceptable if the song was about sex with his wife?

EXACTLY WHAT is the sin being claimed to have been committed here? The profanity? The erotic gospel record? What?

What has Canton Jones said or did to indicate that he is saved and/or a religious person that permits the scrutiny of scripture? 'Cause he made a gospel record? Seriously? Is that the only criteria?

I repost EXACTLY what I said:

We need to understand that these gospel artists are first HUMAN and they are not apologetic for doing what they want to do, whether it pleases their audiences or not. So instead of us wondering if their music is gonna be confusing, we need to see their music for what it is and govern ourselves accordingly. In other words, I'm not waiting for Canton Jones or Kirk Franklin to TELL ME who they are or what they believe or if they are saved. I'm looking at WHAT THEY DO. Now Kirk hasn't come out with any CDs with profanity on them. But apparently Canton Jones did and he didn't ask you for your permission to record it. You, Shandell, a previous buyer of his music, he didn't even let you know he recorded it. Why? Maybe because he didn't want you to hear it and he has made NO APOLOGIES for making such a record. That's why I'm saying that we should see the so-called gospel music thing for what it is and govern ourselves accordingly and I REFUSE to apologize for that.

So let me restate for the record again that I am not using the HUMAN statement to justify nobody's mess. Hear/read me very clearly on that.

Hi Foxyscholar,
Let me first define what a religious person does and I note there is a huge difference between religion and relationship.
A religious person acts out of impulse, does not conform to the Word of God after hearing it; they are hears of the Word and not doers (James 1:22), a religious person argues against the Word of truth, they attend church on Sundays to get their shout on or their emotions ministered to without receiving the incorruptible seed of the Word of God, they never operate in love.
Think about the Pharisees they were considered religious. Having a relationship with God means you serve Him 7/24/365, not just on Sundays to be praised my man; true character is defined in how we live when no one is watching. In others words a religious person hits the clubs on Friday, sleeps with Becky on Thursdays, have drinks with gang on Wednesdays, meditate the Word when the Pastor preaches it on Sundays—that is religion at its worst.
Relationship is true intimacy with the Father; meditating His Word, lingering in His presence, walking in love, confessing our sins if we should fall (1 John 1:9) true repentance, being doers of the Word---that is relationship as opposed to “religion”
As I stated in my original post I attended the same church as Canton, WCI a.k.a Creflo Dollar ministries. I heard Canton profess Christ several times, and he also stated in his song that he received Christ as his Lord and Savior, therefore, according to the Word, which is the final authority he is saved (Romans 10:9-10)
As for Kirk I do not listen to his music, nor do I care to—personal preference.
You asked what sin he committed.
Let me give you what the Word of God has to say, keep in mind that God’s Word is filled with how we are to lead holy lives and what is sin.
Psalms 14:19 (NIV): Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock, and My Redeemer.
Ephesians 4:29 (NIV): Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
If using profanities or describing sexual activities or “erotic sex” as you stated is not constituted as sin for a believer than that person should re-examine their hearts and relationship with God.
Much Love,
Shandell

Two things:

Per your definition of "religious person": your post of disagreement to me seemed to imply on the DL that I was a "religious person" because it looks like I want to give Canton Jones a pass re. his erotic song. I'm saying that I'm not putting nothing past anybody in terms of how they define/portray their salvation and I gently say to you that maybe that's something you should consider doing as well because PEOPLE will disappoint you EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. And for a THIRD TIME, I ask my questions again:

--Should a gospel artist/gospel entertainer (depending on which title is most convienient for them at the time/situation) be judged for their ENTIRE BODY of music or just one song?

You said that you and your husband bought Canton Jones' music in the past. This one song is going to change your mind about that? Maybe this song was recorded before he got saved?

--Was it that the particular record was about sex or that it had profanity in it?
(See above in bold)

--Is it alright/acceptable if the song was about sex with his wife?

EXACTLY WHAT is the sin being claimed to have been committed here? The profanity? The erotic gospel record? What?

You said you heard Canton Jones profess Christ several times. Did you ever witness him repenting?
