Tyra has a relaxer AND color....

Oprah doesn't....

Exactly... I knew a thread like this was coming. Tyra can't win for loosing. I will say this - her hair looked better than I thought it would. She had a nice length and it looked healthy. Her hair may not be long by board standards but by real world standards she has a nice length.

Her stylist making the comment about having to cut your hair for it to grow - well how many of us have heard that before? He may not have phrased it totally right but that premise is not wrong. If you have split ends that are see through. You need to cut them off. Hair also always looks healthier and thicker with freshly clipped ends.

They talked about cutting the color off through the whole segment. You could see she had a few inches of color left and he cut about 3 inches of hair off before the show because he said the ends were nasty and see through. They showed it on camera.

Also with color you pretty much have to grow a whole new head of hair to get rid of it unless you dye over top of it. And even then sometimes you can't get rid of it and there's a possibility of damaging your hair in the process if it wasn't already damaged from the first dye job. Same thing with cutting off a relaxer. You cut all your hair off and start from scratch.

I can't go back an quote...well, let me rephrase, I will not go back and quote. I made it 6pages and that will just have to do.

ANYWAY..on topic.

The 'best stylist in the world' being available to you doesn't necessarily mean squat if those supposed stylists know little to nothing about healthy hair care. Some celebrity stylist get/got to where they are by word of mouth, by connects, by chance, or simply being able to hook up a fly arse weave...no mention of healthy hair practices in any of that.

Based on some of the comments made, Tyra's stylist looks to know not what he doeth; and in turn, Tyra seems to have litte control over the situation. So, we have the blinder leading the blindest. Some of us, maybe not all, but some of us were in that EXACT same position before we sought out solutions (this board) and remedies (hair discussions and blogs) to counteract the bad we were doing to our hair. Truth be told, some of us are still learning to this day (myself included). I actually commend Tyra; we have SO MANY black celebrities that talk of their "natural" hair (for all intense and purposes natural here means without weave or extension), but we know good n heller well, its enhanced. Tyra stands up and says: Here I am.. and we ask her: Where's your hair...

As for the 'difference' in hair progress, we are talking about two totally different women, with two totally different set of hair goals, with two totally different levels of hair knowledge, with two totally different stylists, with two totally different hair histories and journey's....get my point? I think that this board is notorious for revealing that what works for one, doesn't always work for another. So, yes, it would suffice to say that both these women in recent times have worn the weave and the lacefronts, but whose to say that 1) They cared for their "natural" hair undernath the same or at all during this time and 2) That their hair even embraced being left in the weaves and lacefronts.

IMHO, if there IS a difference, I don't think it has anything to do with Trya being Relaxed or Oprah being Natural...its really in how they are individually caring for their hair (with or without the help of a stylist). We all see crazy rapunzel length heads on this board everyday...we also see chic short styles..both relaxed AND natural...and they are all beautiful. No need to stir the pot.

Because they're two different people with two different heads of hair. Take any two random members on here and compare their progress and I'm sure you'll see a STARK difference as well.

I think her hair looks great and it was long before here stylist chopped off three inches...

I think Tyra's hair looks good. And it certainly looks healthier than the average black woman's, in my opinion. Many of the black women I see around me have neck length hair, and it doesn't look that healthy.
Also, her hair looked much thicker once it was dried and styled, so I'm not even buying that whole "her hair is thin and unhealthy thing". I think for most people with relaxed hair, when it is wet, it looks less thick. And then, I think damage becomes more apparent on wet hair. With dry hair, you can hide behind glosses and sheens, but when hair is wet, it all just hangs out. When her hair was wet, it didn't look thick, but it didn't look all damaged and busted either.
And finally, I completely disagree with people saying that Oprah's hair is so much longer and thicker than Tyra's just because it is relaxed and colored and Oprah's is not.
I think everyone here knows that's not even a valid answer, because any kind of hair, if properly taken care of, will grow healthy and strong. There are ladies here who have relaxers and colors, and their hair is still healthy, strong and long, because they take proper care of it. I think that naturals have a bit of a head-start, because they don't have to contend with chemical damage, but they still have their own pitfalls to avoid, and those can be just as damaging as relaxer damage. Just because someone has natural hair doesn't necessarily mean that they will have healthier hair than a relaxed person. There are way more factors to consider than just that.
Let's be real, people.

I don't know if I would compare the two. Sorry if I bring up any points already mentioned--I haven't read through the entire thread, but firstly Oprah has a few years on Tyra. Since Oprah's a bit older, technically speaking, she's had a longer amt of time to recover from any setbacks (if she ever had any) and to promote her healthy hair growth. Now I know it doesn't take 20 years to get to where Oprah is, lol, but sometimes it's like you have to put things in perspective. I haven't seen the show yet but Tyra's hair certainly looked alright to me in the pictures you posted. I don't think that I could judge her hair, especially since my own hair isn't even as long as her's yet! And to reiterate what I saw a few people say, she might not have taken care of it or exercised the same practices that Oprah did. I don't know if I would say that her hair looked like "any other" black girl's either. Idk, I didn't think it was that bad, but that's JMO. :yep:

I am not sure if Tyra has a relaxer but the major difference between the result is the thickness of Oprah's hair. Oprah might be able to do anything with her hair (just like my friend) and get away with it. The thickness of her strands allow her to grow long flowing hair (even from her childhood days) as opposed to someone like Tyra with finer texture hair.

My friend has Oprah's texture and the girl can do almost ANYTHING and still have very long waist length with ease.

Tyra has a relaxer AND color....

Oprah doesn't....

What I see and what I like is that they both NOW have healthy hair be it relaxed or natural and two of the most popular TV show host who are also women of color have reached households across the nation heck across the world and are now spouting off about their OWN hair.

I hope and pray we are at the beginning of a revolution and can take back our images of what healthy hair and haircare is especially for women of color in this nation.

Hopefully all the beauty supply places have been put on notice that sell hair and we began using others hair as a style and no longer as a necessity. I know of some this will not be the case but for many it may be.

I was once one who had the same thought process could NOT be without some hair be it wig or extensions in order for me to be beautiful or acceptable.

Being a part of this community and others like it I have learned because you all have taught me my hair is worthy and beautiful in its own right because it is healthy and it is mine.

Viva La Revolution!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All I know is, Tyra and Oprah both have more hair than I do.

But for real, you can't really compare head to head like that, as has already been said.

I'll use myself as an example. There's a poster here who started at the same length I did, at the same time. She's MBL now and I'm SL-APL. Why is that? Two different people, hair characteristics, regimens, etc. etc.

Even having LHCF at my disposal hasn't made my progress (or most people on this board's progress:look:) as fast as some other members (or Tyra's for that matter). That's just the way life is.

Did you guys watch where the stylist cut her hair and it was past APL and a little above BSL? So I think it is the coloring and her stylist is a scissor happy stylist. He cut 3 inches off and he even said it.

Oprah: If you see her beginning pictures, she has always had long hair--remember when she got a relaxer, her hair fell out. Also, her stylist doesn't say the statement that : To grow you got to let it go." She probably has healthier practices.

I'm a natural with healthy hair...hair is still fine and thinner than Oprah's on my best hair day.:yep:

There are some on here whose hair is relaxed and have hair that puts some natural's hair to shame.

Where do we go from here and what do we do when we get there? That is the question.....

Thank God they just got some hair.... one never knows when alopecia or some other type of thing can come and take all de hair away, I'm just saying....

I'm learning to be grateful with what I have....thank you Lord!

Excellent post!

Oprah might be natural and has super thick hair. Tyra has fine hair, colored with a relaxer...

I find it hilarious how Tyra kept going on and on about how thick her hair was on the show....but IRL even her fans think she actually has fine hair. just another area where her perception of herself doesnt quite add up

i agree these are two different heads of hair....but isnt funny how Oprah's hair reveal was a by-the-way type of thing while Tyra had all this pomp and circumstance?

I think this is a microcosm of the overal difference between the two women. Tyra often seems to desperately chase what Oprah does organically.

TYRA'S HAIRDRESSER did cut her hair at the very start of the show, he ambushed her.
She was not happy with how much he cut, he knew she was on camera and would not make a seen. He also did not show if he put any thing on her hair to protect from the heat, and used a marcel iron, I don't think he even knows about a CERAMIC iron. TYRA said he had been doing her hair off and on for 18 years. Brother needs to go visit ANDRE for a couple weeks.

i really appreciate the effort of both ladies. even though i dont watch either of these shows on a regular basis, some do. somebody may have seen either one of them reveal their own real hair and decided to give that a try. not saying wigs, or weaves are bad, they have their purpose. but it is nice seeing their real hair. i congratulate them both.

Wow couldn't have said it better myself, you hit the nail on the head Bluetopia:yep:

My whole thing is, she made SUCH a huge deal outta the fact that she was doing a "real hair" reveal, if it was just a by the way then thats one thing but she made SUCH a fuss about the fact that she was gonna "reveal" her own hair that I was ready to see something so remarkable that is was.....worth dedicating a show to lol.

Like a PP said, you're comparing relaxed color-treated hair against natural hair. It's like comparing apples & oranges.

exactly! tyra may be famous, but most "stylists" even though they can style the heck out of some hair and weave it up nicely, still subscribe to old ideas about hair care. Tyra doesn't appear to me to be LHCF'd up, sop clearly she is gonna be stuck in that cycle of grow, stylist chops off, grow, stylist butchers...... Ya'll are way too judgmental and just digging for something to criticize.:nono:

Having the best stylist in the world is not the carte blanche for having healthy black hair. If that was the case you can make the argument that being black and having black relatives should also ensure the every black girl knows how to take care of their hair. We all know that is not true which is why we are on this board daily. If that stylist is not empowered with the correct information not only to treat black hair but to maximize growth then their status in the hair world is irrelavant. Tyra hair will never be Oprahs hair. My hair with the best care will never be Oprah's hair . We are all unique and we have to accept that. If Tyra was a member of this board posting an update , we would all be praising her. Her hair is beautiful!

Yeah I was pretty shocked it was so short, I thought it would be longer due to the wigs that she wears, but she may have been cleaning up past damage.
Oprah's hair is fire though, lol

At the end of the day like other posters have said its like comparing apples and pears in so many ways. Both women are at different ages and stages of their careers, different hair types genetically. I like Tyra have always had fine hair and know that whilst my hair may get thicker through better care and treatment that I am unlikely to ever have oprah's hair - because last time I checked you don't grow hair follicles....

Also check out Oprah's hair when she was an anchor reporter years ago, whilst it has always been thick it is in much better health now than it has ever been. Like someone said before (in I felt a rather harsh way) Oprah is more organic but this is because I feel like a good wine she has had time to grow and mature as a person and is way down the line in her hair journey... she has tried more products and stylists than Tyra who is still a young (but very beautiful) Bambi.

So instead of criticizing Tyra lets give her some support because we all know already how the white media love to tear up a good talented black women lets not help them along.

Further Tyra was a model and so her hair has seen the gammult of real truama in 10 years that maybe Oprah will never experience in a lifetime. Unfortunately the trauma of Runway on black hair is shocking and even all the lace fronts and weaves in the world will not save you (especially when done bacdly). Just look at Naomi's weave cleavage (love you Naomi but sort it out).

There is also one factor which I think we are missing which is confidence, Oprah is a seasoned MASTER who has over the years openly dealt with personal tragedies and come out on the other side (hence why she is so inspiring and probably one of the most powerful women in the western hemesphere). Tyra is still on that journey from what I can see. She is still transitioning from how the public will percieve and accept her on Runway to now so the weaves will be hard to give up just like Naiomi. I know this because for years I was terrified by how freinds and work colleagues would percieve me without the beautiful long flowing weave.

In anycase this is getting too darn long. Both Tyra and Oprah are fabulous in my book. Lets celebrate the both of them.

There are plenty of reasons why their hair is not the same and I dont think there is a STARK difference btwn the two, the most obvious difference is their texture and density. Tyra seems to have fine strands whereas Oprahs hair is thick in every sense of the word, and who knows how long each of them has been growing their hair. Either way I'm impressed by both hair, Tyra's hair is very pretty and the stylist can really 'style' the hair but I dont think he knows much about haircare Im pretty certain if she had Oprahs stylist (or was part of LHCF) her hair would be longer and maybe even thicker. Oprahs hair is just fabulous aint nothing more to add.

SPEAK ON IT luckiestdestiny!! SPEAK ON IT!!! :yep::clapping::clapping::clapping::clapping::yep:

My hair was NEVER almost halfway down my back like it got when i decided to go natural.....it was always around APL. Also people are like oh, Tyra has fine hair...my hair started to look like that while wet too after a few yrs with the relaxer and as you can see I naturally have thick coarse strong strands so having a relaxer can be deceptive about that too....thats was one of my biggest motivations to go natural cuz I'd look @ my childhood pix and go:nono: my hair was NOT meant to be this thin I'm going natural, I'll press it if I want it straight best decision I ever made:grin: But she can definitely achieve nice length & thickness with a relaxer too she just needs a new stylists since it def wont be practical for her to be a DIYer.

She most definitely is suffering with her scissor happy stylist smh:nono:

this may or may not be true for her, you and tyra, just like tyra and oprah are diff ppl with diff heads of hair. i remember seeing tyra's hair quite a few times during her modeling days, and her hair has always, no exceptions looked on the fine side to me. everyone simply will not have as much hair thickness as oprah. its in arguable.
