Breakage, the story of my life...

Hi. This is my second time posting here on LHCF and I need some help with a problem. I have had issues with hair breakage for years. Breakage on my ends I can handle it's just the breakage in the very front of my head that's a problem. Well it seems that the top layer of my hair seems to have the same problem. The hair here seems short and it never lays flat but seems "prickly" when I have my hair pulled back. I stopped brushing my hair and it improved somewhat but it's still a problem. I want this hair to grow out. I'll post a pic later.

What's your regimen and how do you normally wear your hair? We need more info to be able to give you appropriate advice

My reggie:
Cowash - Suave Coconut Conditioner 1x/week
Wash - Suave Almond and Shea Butter Poo & condish 1x/week
Blowdry - after each was on low/cool w/SE Olive Glosser
Moisturize - Proclaim Olive Glosser/Silk Elements nightly*
Wrap with satin scarf/bonnet at night
I only use wide tooth combs (magic star)
Flat Iron after wash day - 1-2x weeks** using Silk Elements Olive Spray
Aphogee 2 Minute reconstructor & DC with Queeen Helene Cholesterol Condish 1x/month
"Dusting" my ends monthly.

This reggie works well for me although it could use improvement.

*I use the hair glosser/serum and direct heat on my hairbecause I noticed the LEAST amount of breakage on my ends.

I'm entirely natural. Right now I don't have split ends(I hope) because I had a moisturizing mishap last month which left me with my hair in a mess so I had to do a trim. I normally wear my hair up in a clip because it is so short I really can't style it any other way.

um it seems like you need some real moisture products
glosser will make your hair "shine" but they dont add moisture and i may be wrong but that cholesterol is a protein... so it could be possible that your hair is protein overloaded...

but im still newish so yea

Yea I know the glosser isn't much in the way of moisture. I do have coconut oil which I bought yesterday, some avacado oil, almond, apricot, and grapeseed oil which I just bought last week. I do have some bioinfusion olive oil moisturizing lotion which worked well but the proclaim serum helped to extend the moisture with out a lot of build up. I just started cowashing last week and I already notice a difference in the mangeability and moisture in my hair. I would cowash up to two days a week but I need to have atleast 1 shampoo a week and I don't want to do too much blowdrying. Although I said that I flat iron I don't plan on flat ironing anytime soon, maybe once a month for lenght checks. I don't have a problem using the cholesterol conditioner along with the aphogee . I may try Silk Elements Silk Moisturising treatment for my DC.

Thanks.

Could somebody tell me how to post pics. I have them uploaded to my album but I'm having a hard time trying to upload them in posts.
Thanks.

From my understanding the Queen Helene is a protein DC. You need to incorporate a moisture rich conditioner into your regi, especially as you've been using quite a lot of heat. It's fine (and of course important) to protect the hair with protein but if your hair isn't adequately hydrated then the protein won't be as effective.

Also get a more suitable moisturiser for your needs, and I would suggest weekly DC's until your hair is back in shape.

I would suggest 3 changes
-I would increase the number of moisturizing DC's you're doing. Like somebody mentioned the mayo's are more protein than moisture and the aphogee is def protein. I would follow your weekly wash with a moisturizing DC and see if that helps.
-The flat ironing may be contributing to your breakage. Maybe see if you can do more heat free styles
-I would also suggest a good leave in conditioner

Although I mentioned that I flat iron that was my old regimen. I haven't flat ironed in about a month an even then it was sporadiclly. I do appreciate all of the advice. I will look into moisturizing DC, any suggestions?

The most heat that I use is from the blowdryer and that's GOT to be on COOL. Other than that I'm happy to give up heat styles. I did try to rollerset and I did notice that the splits had not returned (this is after about a month of rollersetting) but my hair was too kinky afterward that I considered blowdrying a must to get the kinks out. I don't dry my hair until it is totally dry. I leave a little moisture behind. First I use some serum on toweled dried hair (yea I know about the towels I'll find someting better soon) to give it a little slip, then I allow my hair to airdry a bit to remove some of the moisture so that my hair is not really wet when I BD. Next I pass my GVP tourmaline/ceramic BD through a small section of hair on the coolest/lowest setting while holding my hair taught to prevent recoil and potential breakage. After I'm finished I may use the bioinfusion moisturising lotion.

I may pick up a sample packet of the SE Megasilk Moisturising Treatment from Sallys. I wonder if they have the olive treatment in the sample size?

I plan on doing a cowash tonight and shampooing Friday or Saturday. I have been experimenting with prepooing with the Suave condish before shampooing and I found that I barely have any kinks when detangling.

I actually am not blaming your heat styling. Your regimen is missing a nice deep moisturizing conditioner, that has little or no protein in it. At least 15 - 20 min with it or about an hour/ overnight with no heat.
I recommend any of these:
Joico moisture recovery balm (my fave)
Keracare humecto (previous fave of mine)
Nexxus Humectress (has some protein in it but not alot)
Kenra (never tried it personally but a lot of ladies like it)

For a moisture DC I like Aubrey's organic honeysuckle rose. Sometimes I mix it with other DCs but it's also good by itself

Actually I might pick up some Kera Care Humecto. Is that a mooisturizing or protein DC?
Moisturizing. Usually the 8 oz bottle is like $13- $15. It's better/ thicker in the tub but I'd start with the bottle first to try it out.

ETA: I meant 8 oz bottle, not 16 oz

Sounds like you need more moisturising and less protein conditioners. Also using your hair straighteners seems a little excessive whilst you are experiencing breakage. I recently discovered black tea rinses which strengthen, colour and stops shedding. Try this before DCing it will make a great difference.

Tonight I picked up some KeraCare Humecto from my BSS. Walmart had some Mizani H2o and moisturefuse. Does anybody have any experience with these?

I like the Mizani Moisturefuse. I actually switched between that and the Humecto. Both are creamy. I think they both conditioned my hair in a similar fashion. I still use have them, but since my transition to 100% natural I've been trying to use mostly natural products like Aubrey Organics.

I loved Keracare Humecto, my hair loved it, no complaints. So why did I switch to Joico? Curiosity, and I'm a product junkie :D :D :D I do like Joico very much as well. Nothing like being in love with one conditioner and cheating on it with another

I cowash with Suave Conditioners. I have some Aussie Moist that I've been meaning to try. I also use Suave for my pre-poo treatment.
