"You look South African"

Not to generalize but Africans from specific regions DO tend to have a specific look. Its had to explain but I can usually guesstimate which region an African is from. For example I have a friend from a specific southern african country and I noticed that they tend to have lighter skin with doe eyes same with west africans who tend to have high cheekbones or with sudanese and their very dark and rich skintone. Again I can't really explain it well, I just recognize it.

belletropjolie I know exactly what you are saying. There are certain places where people's heads are more round like an orange (for a lack of a better descriptive word), or darker skin that is very smooth & rich, or curlier hair, higher cheekbones etc. It is so fascinating!

Take it as a compliment and that, yes, he was trying to mack. People often assume Americans (Canada to Chile) ignorant of other cultures, but it's quite evident in a variety of situations I and others have witnessed that other Black peoples do not quite know OUR subcultures. He was unaware and was trying to place you based upon what he is used to, Africa. Maybe you reminded him of somebody he knew back home? BTW, nice hair.

I was asked if I was Dominican by a guy I had just started dating. An associate of mine at work made a bigotted comment about latinos then suddenly looked at me and was like "oh are you spanish". A nice man with an accent I was talking to in my math class asked me if I was "Coolie" I said no. I didn't even know what coolie was till I went home that night and googled it. I got all these comments either when I had my long curly weave or after I made BSL

I've gotten Nigerian, Ethiopian (now how can I look like I'm from opposing parts of the continent? Pick a side!), and Jamaican.

 cocosweet, as OP has said, features of our people are so diverse and you might look like someone they know from either side. This lady is Nigerian:

...but she looks like she could be a sister to my Ethiopian friend. And here's another girl that I'd not doubt was from Ethiopia too if you told me she was but and she isn't:

And most times when we think "Ethiopian" we think light-skinned with type 2 or 3 hair. But here's a lady whom one may not immediately know is Ethiopian unless you know the Karo tribe:

Maybe he was from South Africa and your beautiful hair and sweet greeting as a stranger made him feel like he was back home for a minute..lol. Just a guess :)

Yes. I did a lot of projects in SA at one point and that was something I noticed.

Interesting. I would have thought otherwise, but I haven't been to South Africa.

I know in Uganda their traditional dress does emphasize big booties but without having gone to either country, I could've sworn there are more huge butts in Uganda than in South Africa. :giggle:

This one white guy who studied some sort of African culture in college told me that I look like my ancestors could have originated from the Ivory Coast based on my features.

Other than that, I've been called Spanish and Latin.

People always ask if I'm from Africa- (Ethiopia). I actually think it's a compliment. I think Ethiopians are gorgeous! I'm not sure where in Africa my ancestors are from so....

@MissAlinaRose do you have more pix of your mini braids anywhere? They look great!

Sent from my iPhone using LHCF

BlackMasterPiece Ok so I just tried to pm you with an enlarged version of my siggy pic but I didn't see the paperclip icon.

Anyhoo, I have attached the only couple of pics that I have of my braids and this was last summer. They are a bit longer than this now, but it is the same concept.

I've gotten Cape Verdean, Panamanian,Brazilian, Dominican, Trini. I also have been asked if I am coolie - for a long time I didn't know what that meant.

Mostly I get "what are you?" which annoys the hell out of me.

I'm not sure. I always get asked if I'm Ethiopian. I wasn't aware they had a particular look. Then I looked them up!

Uh.. @MissAlinaRose

Why you gotta PM? How come you can't post them somewhere? I like pictures.:look:

LoL
I can't wait until my hair gets to your status. I would rock those day and night!

ETA: I'm usually mistaken for being from "the islands"

Aww my apologies madam Swift. They are public now...enjoy!

Oh and ya'll please excuse my facial expression/forced smile in that second pic. I was recovering from a temporary facial paralysis and still could not smile all the way.

MissAlinaRose Your hair looks amazing! I love it, you have the perfect thickness and length to pull it off. I hope my hair does that style justice when I try it again.

You ladies are too kind! Thank you for the nice words.

MzSwift I did them on stretched hair. I wore a braid out for about a day then used the sections from the braid out to make very small braids.

How long did you keep em in? I only lasted like a month back when I did them but I think I wanna do better next time. I absolutely love having mini braids in, just wash condition and go, so liberating.

Ive had people ask me if I am from Ghana or Kenya. I'very had more people refusing to believe that I am Haitian. I have learned not to flip out when people say "you don't look like a Haitian. " I don't even ask any questions, just on to the next topic.

Thanks for your comments!

Yep totally,
I've been 'mixed' with everything. Cambodian, Asian, White, Indian, My roomate's boyfriend asked if I was Dominican.

Then last week at work, a black guy and a white girl both asked if I was mixed. Interesting, in highschool no one questioned if I was black.

But now everyone's got some blood they want to add into my lineage. I thought wearing braid extensions would make me seem more AA positive. :look:

My sister/mom swear up and down it's because of how I do my eye make up but eh. I think color and other factors have to do with it. (shrugs)

Btw, the woman in that picture is so pretty! I'd take that as a major compliment!
