Braid outs: do they make your ends look scraggly when you do it?

I can't figure out if braid outs just make ends look scraggly when they're not or if they wreck ends altogether. What are your experiences?

I think it makes it look scraggly and eventually it makes it scraggly especially if you doing tight braids

^^Yes, I've learned not to braid to the ends because they tend to tangle and thus get scraggled.

I haven't experienced any scraggly ends...once I get to the ends of my braids, I twist. Today I trimmed my ends and they look healthy. That may be the issue...make sure you are trimming your ends on a regular schedule. I love braidouts!

^^ This. I also twist my ends and then I place a perm or flexi-rod on the end. Perhaps they're scraggly looking because they need to be trimmed.

I never braid all the way to the end. I use a perm rod for the last 1 1/2 inches or so.

Also my hair can look thinner at the ends depending upon the type of braid pattern I use.

I used to use a satin covered roller for the end and leave them unbraided but this seems to cause more tangles at my ends. I now use the satin scarf method (5 months strong now).

I have never had issues with my ends thinning with a braid out (I have been doing them for 2 years or so, before then I did twist outs 99% of the time. Don't forget to seal the ends daily. When I do get breakage its because I have forgotten to seal on my non wash days.

Well, since I'm still transitioning, I'm dealing with my relaxed ends. However, my natural hair is quite thick and curly when I'm doing braid outs/twist outs.

I must resist the urge to cut the ends now!

Co-sign on this. Also twirl the very end it and spritz with water to curling of the ends even more.

Using a perm rod or curling the end and securing with a bobbie pin works like a charm for me. I also moisturize and seal my ends before setting.

I used to have this issue then I finally gave the perm rods on the ends trick a try and it solved the issue completely for me. I detangle, braid tightly then for the last 3inches I do heavy sealing with like castor oil or a butter, roll the perm rod neatly and my ends are nice and stretched for the duration of the style. You can also use flexi rods and get a similar result, but now I'm head over heels for bantu knot outs, now thats some serious stretch for a hair type like mine.

co-signing with everyone else. :yep: flexirods, rollers, etc.. is the way to go.
If I get lazy and don't roll the ends it always results in stringy ends.

NYE side boob.
they don't make my ends scraggly, but i just like the look of using some type of roller on the end better. permrods, flexirods, etc.
unless it's on blowdried hair, then i like just leaving the ends.

i recommend adding a bit of a heavy oil or serum on your ends to make em feel good. castor oil is great!

I used to braid my hair all the way down but my ends never came out right. I twist the hair the last 1/2 to 1 inch from the ends and I don't use too much product. I used Tresemme Naturals and my shea mix for my last braidout and it turned out very nice :)

Twists ruin my hair. It's braids or nothing for me. I braid all the way down and make sure the ends are wet and they curl on their own. The size of the curl depends on how large the braids are.

I like to cowash braids then undo them once they're dry. It's mire defined and curly that way.

Yes they do that's why I don't wear them often.. My ends dry really fast compared to the rest of my hair..

It's funny because I trim about a centimeter or more every two weeks. Seems like either my ends are just naturally fragile (since I trim often with a new pair of sheers) and moisturize/seal 1-2x daily.

Sounds like what's making the ends smooth is the satin rollers or perm rods. Should be worth a try!

Yes OP definitely try the satin scarf method. I've been using it for over a year now and it prevents my ends from being tangled and gives a very uniform look. You also don't need to do as many braids to get good definition. Let's know if you try it. I think you'll find you like it

If I'm in need of a trim, yes, they look straggly. With a new trim, they curl into a lovely curl. Other times, I grab those perm rods when I want uniform curls all over. And no, I never braid to the end.
