How Do You Keep Your Hair From Drying Out

I apologize if this has already been asked. Please direct me to the thread if it has.

How do you ladies, specifically those that wear your hair out most of the time (natural, relaxed or texlaxed), keep your hair from drying out throughout the day when you don't have your products around? I know that PS help retain moisture but I prefer to wear my hair out and when I do, my hair soaks up the moisture and by lunchtime my hair is completely dry. Does it have to do with sealing your moisture in? Do you go to the bathroom and spritz water on your hair? Do you carry a small vial of oil with you wherever you go? Please tell me your secrets.

After I finish rinsing my hair, I don't touch it anymore. I am not sure if it looks dry to others, but I am okay with it. Unless i attempt to manipulate it dry, i don't see how it could break as i detangle, etc. with conditioner or shampoo slathered.

I always remember what andre walker said: moisturizing your hair comes with whatever you do with water, ie rinsing conditioning, etc.

adding stuff after your initial stuff (above) is just lubricating it. ie oils, sprays, etc.

it sounds about right.

lately everything, even heavier conditioners just seems to 'sit' on my hair,

whereas after i wash, detangle and add a slippery, watery conditioner like vo5, it is

better. this is only day 2 though. we will see. :)

I hope you get more responses. I am curious too...

I've been natural for 4 months and suffered with dry hair in particularly my edges. I used Luster's Curl Activator and natural shea butter sealed with a plastic cap. To my surprise nice moist and soft twa. Drinking plenty of water is in order.

What I usually do is moisturize every morning with dudleys pca, and then I seal with jojoba essential oil. I heard that jojoba oil (pure 100%) is the best sealant. And I know from experience that Dudleys pca is fantastic.

Make sure your hair is ph balanced before you deep condition. I like porosity control shampoo and conditioner.

Be sure you seal the miosture into your hair well during styling.

Keep in mind cooler/extreme temps dry hair out fast. Protect your hair from the elements: silk scarf under your hat, until you get in the building.

I combat dryness by sealing. In the morning, because it's too cold to totally wet/co-wash, I spritz my hair with water, apply an oil (Komaza Jojoba Hemp oil), and follow with a cream (QB Amla Olive Oil Heavy Cream).

This routine leaves my hair very soft and not the least bit dry. Once I learned about the LOC method, I never looked back.

When I do wear my hair out, I use S Curl No Drip Moisturizer. It does not dry out for me and in fact after applying twice on wash day, I don't need to apply again the following days until I wash my hair.

Why apply twice on wash day? Because if I apply it to damp hair (ie immediately after a wash), it will dry along with the water in my hair and my hair will feel dry at the end of the day. (I don't bother my hair during the day so I am not aware of its moisture's state until the end of the day.) At the end of the day, I reapply S Curl to soften and moisturize my now dry hair and braid and baggy for the night. In the AM I just take baggy off and go out with moist hair that even feels cool--but that isn't greasy or icky sticky. That new moisture lasts me for days as long as I baggy at night to keep it on my hair and not on my scarf or pillow.

I've never understood the need to moisturize several times throughout the day. I have 4B hair which is considered the driest of all, and most times I don't use moisturizer at all.

ETA: Porous hair does lose moisture to the air so maybe products like Roux Porosity Control can help. Low porosity hair may need baggying for moisture to penetrate strands so that it's not thirsting for moisture. Perhaps some of us are just used to juice dripping hair so that we mistakenly assume hair is dry if it isn't looking like this:

I keep a little vial of oil mixture that I have in my purse and spritz my hair when I go to the bathroom throughout the day.

ajw827 So do you keep a spritz in your purse too. OP I'd like to know the answer as well. I carry my sprtiz bottle in the car (on weekends) so I can rehydrate. I would like something that lasts me through the day. But I'm also obsessed w/juicing my hair (spritzing w/my aloe juice concoction)

IME, an effective DCing session is the best cure all for dryness. If my hair exhibits dryness between DCs, that’s my cue to examine my DC routine.

i moisturize with a water based cream (claudies revitalizer makes great ones) or lotion then seal with a mixture of various oils 3-5 a week. i also deep condition if needed. get a humidifer as well.

@bhndbrwneyes

Deep conditioning with moisture and oil works for me as a foundation.

1. If I wear a twistout, I heavily moisturize my wet hair and heavily seal with shea butter. This keeps my hair moisturized for days. If I redo the twists before washing, I saturate the sections with an oil moisturizer and this keeps me moist until I wash and condition again.

2. For straight hair, I put in leave-in, coconut oil and a styling mousse OR serum on my wet hair, comb it straight back put on a silk scarf or wig cap and dry under the dryer. I moisturize my ends by spraying small amounts of SAA/water spritz, leave-in and oil on the ends and edges as needed and secure hair for the night.

Regular deep conditioning mixed with a heavy oil if the key to moisturized hair. Steam hair if you can.

so, you don't even seal w/ an oil or something?
