New (2018) Shea Moisture " Max Hold " Gels

Shea Moisture recently released 3 new "max hold" gels.

Most of the YouTubers who have reviewed it so far describe it as flake-prone with a good hold that yields a cast. One Youtuber raved about the manuka honey one.

Currently, some stores sell them with flip top lids, and some don't.

Has anyone tried one or more of them and got it/them to work?

I had to return the manuka honey one. It flaked on my hair, and I couldn't get it to work on my roots. I tried it because I was hoping for moisturized, gelled hair.

When I returned it, I noticed a significant drop in price. I paid $10.99 just a few days ago. It's now $7.99 at this Target.

I really wonder what the deal is.

For as much gel as I use for wash-n-go's, that's too expensive.

:yep: I thought I might be able to skip a whole product with this gel. If it moisturized, as advertised, I'd need no leave in.

No go.

Oh well. I will continue to try to get a moisturized result with my HG gel -- Bronner Brothers Firm Hold Curling Gel. If that gel didn't leave my hair a little dry, it would be perfection. Ingredients are bomb and performance is amazing. I'm going to continue trailing it in different combinations with various moisturizers.

That's interesting that you say that, because my WNGs rock, but I realized about two years ago that the only product that worked was a relatively pricey gel that I have to slather on. The results are worth it, but as my hair is on the grow now, WNGs are quickly becoming my most expensive hair style.

What gel do you use that costs less than this one?

What gel are you currently using, @GreenEyedJen?

On top of nothing, but just prior she had conditioned my hair under the dryer with DevaCurl One Condition, and then she rinsed some but not all of it out to act as a leave in.
I see, thank you! I remember you said that One Condition clumps and defines your curls. So that must be a winning combo. But did you take note of the technique she used?

I did. I couldn't replicate it, and I tried and tried.

But I tried her same technique with DevaCurl Decadence One Condition and Bronner Brothers gel, and it's almost as good.

I'm pretty satisfied with it. I honestly can go over a week now with good-looking hair that I don't need to redo. I'm amazed. The only issue: It feels a tad dry. So, this weekend I'm going to see if adding Shea butter reduces SSKs and increases moisture retention but still yields the same pretty look and longevity. Fingers crossed.

I'm glad to hear that you are so close to perfecting your wash and go now.
I am still getting the sporadic good wash and go followed by a series of bad hair days and I still can't put my finger on the factor(s) that give me the good definition. It's a mystery and it's driving me crazy lol.

If it's any consolation, Chime says it can take years to master your wash and go. She discusses the variables in the video below. But you already know what she shares. Still, it helps to know it's not strange for it to take time.

This is my first year working with my natural texture and I just hope it won't take forever to master the WNG. It was much easier on my texlaxed hair.

BTW I'm getting that urge to start trialling new products again. I think my PJism works in cycles and phases lol

Lol.

What do you want to try?

I just saw a YouTube demo of a new DevaCurl detangling product. Wash Day Wonder or something. It's of course overpriced. I still wish to try a sample, if they have any.

What is wrong with me? Lol.

I want to try new wash and go products. Your beloved Bronner Brothers gel for one, the MC leave in and gel that @Coilystep likes, the new Ecostyler gel, the DE honey custard, KCKT, CRN aloe whipped butter gel (and her Creme Restore Cowash) among others lol.

I hear you regarding Deva Curl. But you know what even their One Condition is a really good detangler.
