Damage from wearing half wigs

I tried the search function but...you know. I have been wearing a half wig off and on for about 2 months. My goal was to grow out my nape which continues to break off for some reason. I have been watching that area closely but it seems as if the damage occurs over night. It's like I'll go to bed and I can stetch at least an inch in that area and then I wake up to patches. I don't know if it's the way I brush my hair that may camouflage the damage; I just don't know. I moisturize that area twice a day with coconut oil and seal with castor oil.

How many of you ladies have had success wearing half wigs and how did you protect your nape while wearing them? I would like your regimes for wearing half wigs long term. TIA!

When I read this I was like ooh this is me!!!! I had a major set back with my half wig i mean major breakage of my hair. After I took out my braids. I couldn't believe I actually did more harm then good!! Well after I figured out what took place I stopped wearing it it has been at least since June my hair is growing back but it's still not as thick as it was. I cut a little at a time just to cut off the breakage as it grows so far it's catching up but I'm debating I might just do a super chop to make it look more fuller and healthier

You should be wearing a wig cap be it mesh or net. I place the combs under the net at the nape.

I dont insert the combs into my hair. The comb is laying against my hair held by the cap.

This way the nape hair receives no friction or digging from the combs.

Be sure to wear a net cap that gives a snug fit.

Okay ladies don't scare me.I just got into half wigs/falls this past weekend and I am in LOVE. I have this big curl one and I put my hair in 6 big braids to the back. So is there something else I should being doing to protect the nape area of my hair????
I was going to go get me 2 more just so I can have one always on reserve. I mean everyone thinks its my hair this style fits me so good.

I was going to try wearing my half wig/instant weave throughout January. I was actually considering shampooing and conrowing my own hair once a week, and then leaving the half wig on day & night. I had my concerns about breakage, but it's good to know that even with nightly removal, breakage can occur.

I might consider getting a wig cap or just getting a touch-up and bunning for a while.

When I tried wearing the wig cap, it seemed as if my nape hairs did not all fit into the cap and that cap was really tight on my head. I don't know what a net cap is but I'll look for one. If anyone has pics, please post.

As for those who have had success growing their hair out with half wigs and NO DAMAGE, please leave a comment.

Are you sleeping in the half wig? I have been wearing them for a few months, I never wear it to bed. I haven't experienced any breakage.

ETA: How is your hair worn under the wig? Cornrows, pinup or wrap?

I have never slept in it!
I put it on evvery day and kept it moisturized
I even kept the back in braids
Matter of a fact I'll try posting a pic of the one I wore so you'll know what I'm talking about

I never had a problem. I was wearing mines before I even found LHCF and my hair grew like CRAZY. I wasn't even moisturizing daily. There are pics in my fotki of them from 06. I wore the sensationnel brand model HZ8001, the best ever!

If you wear the ones with the combs, it has been suggested that oiling the combs will prevent damage. I just avoid the combs all together, I buy the Freetress drawstring type and cut out the combs. Wig caps themselves can be drying, try wearing a satin bonnet under the half wig.

I will try to wear the satin bonnet underneath. I have to find a black one because if you hold your head a certain way, the net can be seen through the hair. BTW, shtow, how did you wear your hair underneath that it "grew like crazy"?

I too wear half wigs from time to time.

I never experienced a problem though.

In reading through this thread, I can say that it never crossed my mind to wear it over night...I can see how that would cause damage...

Quick question regarding half wigs. I'm looking at www.harsister.com. Are half wigs considered the same as instant weaves or are these two different things?

My half wig wasn't tight so I didn't experience any type of breakage:ohwell:...it had some slack because I had cut some of the elastic ...I have a big ole head...trying cutting some of the elastic if it's too tight

1. Coconut oil may not be moisturizing enough to use alone..I would suggest a water based leave in conditioning SPRAY. (Dove Moisture Mist, John Frieda Daily Nourishment, Braid Spray, Hawaiian Silky 14 in 1)

2. How is you hair styled underneath? When I wore mine I had cornrows, braided HORIZONTALLY...because I had the braids I was able to remove the combs all together ( I AM SOOOOO AGAINST THOSE COMBS) If you can't cornrow try to do single plaits or something, don't just leave the hair out..let you hair rest/low to no manipulation and moisturizing often with a conditioning spray= great way to retain growth...you can even wash in the cornrows.

I used those soft bobby pins (that were oiled) to secure my piece they are much better than those combs

You can try sewing in a satin piece onto the inside of the fall...where your nape is...

I have not had a problem wearing half wigs. I usually keep my hair in 6 braids underneath the half wig. When I get home from work, I remove the half wig. I moisturize my hair as needed, in the morning or evening.

I do not wear wig caps or bonnets under my half wig. My nap area continues to grow without problems from the comb. Sometimes I will use the comb in the back if it's a large half wig and other times it just lays on my hair.

I used to have the same problem with those combs so what I do is use a head band underneath my half wig. I actually use them under my wigs too around my head. I use the stretchy lycra kind. When I wear the half wigs only the top set of teeth are slightly in my hair. The back set are positioned up under the head band and the top is in the band and a little bit of my hair. When I wear the full wig it comes in contact with the headband instead of my hair. I just position around my head like a guy does a sweatband. It has saved a lot of wear and tear on my nape and temples this way. Just be absolutely sure to moisturize the areas good before hand. These are what I am talking about
I know most BSS's have them in like two packs rather cheap. HTH

maaan, dont do this to me  i just started wearing half wigs this year too , and I really really like it! i kind of figured there will be some damage cause of the combs, and the fact that I curl the hair that is left out , so it can blend in. i dont braid my hair underneath, i just put a stocking cap over the back half and insert the combs.

I have been moisturizing my hair pretty well and I don't see any further damage. I'm keeping my eye on it, though.
