bad comments about hair

All my life I was always picked on about my hair. Even now I am 20 someone always has something to say. I'm not gonna lie I did have a lot of damage back in the day but talking about it all the time isn't going to make me feel better. Up to last night I think someone suggested I give my hair back to the horse. ( I have a weave) And I know when I wear my hair natural soon I'm know I'm gonna hear even more talk. I know people will always talk about you regardless but it's annoying. Has anyone here experienced this? And how do you respond to these people?

As a transitioner, I have gotten bad comments about my hair. But with the people talking about your hair, I don't know if they are being harsh or just playing. Most of the bad comments I get, the people are just playing with me. I do not let the comments get to me because I know that I'm doing something that I want for my hair. I do not let others determine how they want my hair to be. For example "Your hair is nappy, you need to just relax that stuff" but I'm going natural so getting my hair relaxed is out of the picture. So when people make bad comments about your hair, just shake it off and tell them to worry about their own self.

Hmmm, you must be really nice because I have a smart mouth and I could easily see myself telling someone, "Who the f%#k asked you?". Or, if you don't want to take it to the ghetto, just say, "When I want your opinion, I'll ask you for it." Sometimes you have to put people in their place.

People always commented about my hair too and they still do. The only difference is they are always commenting on how much hair I have and how thick it is. In the past, some stylists even got an attitude with me about how much hair I had and how they would have to charge me more than everybody else; sometimes they would try to talk me out of the style I wanted to get because they didn't feel like doing it. I guess that I didn't have the same experiences that you did, but I would just say success is the best revenge. When they see how nice and healthy your natural hair is, they will have to eat thier own words. However, like you said, people will talk anyway whether you have long or short hair. People have asked me if I have a weave or tracks in my head.

dont even entertain it! half heartedly say things like 'yeah?' 'oh it is? really...interesting...'

or when someone says 'give that hair back to the horse' reply very seriously "I didn't get it from a horse, I bought it at the beauty shop"

As a natural i've had only one person give me a really rude offhand comment. I didnt even say anything, I just looked at her overprocessed, broken off short hair that looked like it could be rollerset on rice grains and burst out laughing while still looking at her head. Then i just walked off laughing with her still standing there.

Can i tell you she never made another comment about my hair again. I guess she felt dumb when the people standing around followed my gaze to the hot mess sitting on her head  . -- jainygirl

Locabouthair,
Hold your head up and hang in there. It'll be okay. Sometimes I am astonished at how many mean people there are in the world. Learn all you can from this board, baby and nurture you hair (and yourself too), be patient and before you know it, your hair will flourish. If you hang in there and stay away from the weaves (I hate weaves too girl), I think you will be pleasantly surprised at your results. So, ignore the haters and focus on you. I've found one of the best responses to rude comments is to ask the person, "What did you just say?" This really throws people. Often they'll say never mind. If they have the nerve to repeat themselves, I would shake my head and say something like, "You must have a lot of time on your hands to be worried about my hair. Too bad you couldn't think of something nice to say." Then walk away.

A lot of the ladies here say, "You do you." Soon you'll have the last laugh.:Rose:

I used to get picked on everyday my freshman year of high school. I had to swim everyday for P.E. and couldn't keep my hair pressed. These mean girls went out of their way to tell me how nappy, tore up, beady headed I was. And I had my hair in indididual braids with my own hair and I thought I looked cute. I would go home crying and they even followed me home. It really hurt my feelings but when I think about it, who goes out of their way to make someone feel bad. I figure they must have their own self-esteem issues.

I would say that I would give the horse back it's hair if they promised to give the donkey back it butt (or whatever word you feel comfy with) or looks. :look:
I used to get picked on a lot & I'm sure people have things to say now but I'm comfortable with myself too much to let someone else ruin my outtings! I don't look like I was just released from an asylum or jail, I'm good! I thank all those who picked on me in elementry & high school, they've only made me stronger & helped me to develop my quick wit & sharp tongue!
Either way, as long as you know you're on point then it shouldn't be anyone's business. If they aren't there to be constructive, they they need to beat it!:whip:

I've been picked on quite a bit also. I've had two people who out of nowhere offered to take me to their stylist and I didn't even ask. And those were two times that I thought my hair was looking good so I was really offended but kept my mouth shut. I wish I was the kind of person that was able to tell people to f#^@ off.

Since being at college, most of the African American girls here think its weird that i

rinse my hair everyday <-----they tell me i think im white*plus i talk right*
do not use grease
have not used a curling iron or flat iron this semester
i do not wear my hair down but in a protective style
spend hours on my hair
spend too much $$$ on hair products

My room mate since the begininng of the school year told me my hair would break off cause i do "unusual" things to it...tonight she commented on how much my hair had grown :).....so i dont even try to educate those who dont want to listen, my results speak much louder then my words...:)

Last week my supervisor said another black co-worker said I have beautiful hair but I need to relax it. I am stretching and this is my 16th week. I will be touching up today. Anywho, I said something to her about it and she jumped down my supervisor's case. It did not matter with me. When I will be at brastrap her any my supervisor will still be neck length. My supervisor has the shortest, thinest hair of any white woman I know. I guess because she hot curls and blow dries it everyday.. I wasn't mad though. I think if you are not talked about then you are not thought about. However, I will be quick to tell your butt off if you cross the line. I just tell them basically that my hair is none of your business.
