Alopecia issue following illness

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the board. I have type 4A hair - and following a brief heart illness several years ago, my hair broke off in a quarter-size area in the top of my head. The area seems to be spreading recently (now about 2" x 2") - I'm not bald, but my hair grows out to a certain length, usually no more than an inch, and then breaks off to about a centimeter.

I've been to 2 doctors, all thinks it's from scratching to much. I notice prior to my hair breaking off that my scalp area feels very tight, almost like skin that's dehydrated, itches like crazy under the skin - possibly nerves one doctor told me and suggested getting a biopsy of my scalp. My hair in that area feels like a different texture - much coarser.

My hairdresser is stumped as well - he has a couple of clients that have the same issue - hair grows out, and then breaks off down to the scalp. I want to know what to do, who to go to, if my hair will ever grow back in more than an inch or two.

Please let me know if anyone has ever experienced this, suggestions, etc.

Many thanks.

Alison

Check out the "Proven Oil Blend..." thread on this board.

Someone at the nappturality.com forum had a bald patch that started getting bigger and bigger. I've tried, but I can't remember who it was. Sorry.. But I remember she applied Wella Kolestral to the bald patch at night and shampooed it out in the morning. Her hair grew back. She had before and after photos.

Someone else on the same board had hair transplant surgery for the same problem. Do a search on "alopecia" at that site.

Good luck!

There is a place here in New York, Manhattan called the Kinsley Instititue - they are hair specialist in that they study the hair follicle - they put it under a microscope - that kind of thing - I told a co-worker about it, and she went and got results - you may want to ask when Mr, Kinsley is actually in and he will see you, he saw my co-worker - It could very well be an internal problem...

Let us know how it goes!!!

I got mine from Sally's. A friend of mine uses it on her DOG!
If you do a web search, a lot of pet sites will come up. But it's made for people. I bought a little tube. I forgot how much it cost. But I know the 1 lb tub is $7.99 at Sally's. Warning--it contains both sls and petrolatum (a lot of people are trying to avoid those ingredients).

Did you find the woman at nappturality that used it?
