Help Me Grow My Nape!!

dontspeakdefeat

Hair Coach
Hi everyone!!

I know it's been a while since I posted anything about my hair. I have just been really busy. Things are coming together and I am occasionally finding time to participate again. I miss you guys.

Well, overall my hair is doing well but my nape suffers because I pull my hair. For the past couple of months I have been making a conscience effect to not pull my hair so I need your help.

I would like to take you all on this journey with me. Please help me grow my nape.

Tips, tricks, suggestions or whatever you guys can think of would be greatly appreciated.

I will keep you guys updated on the progress in this thread.

I also made a video. http://youtu.be/w-ByBXPaJpw

So thanks in advance for your help!!

-Tamika

DSD, have you considered doing a French braid across the back of your nape and keeping it moisturized? Your wigs and weaves would cover it up. You will not be able to pull, because that area will be in a braid.

Moisturize that area via a moisturizing spritz, so you don't have to touch it with your fingers/hands and get tempted to pull.

Re braid it every two weeks.

I wish you well on your nape journey!

:blowkiss:

ETA: Your name is DSD, you got this!

ETA2: You have to crochet, knit, pull licorice or taffy when you're stressed. Do do something else with your fingers/hands.

MileHighDiva Thank you. You are so sweet. These are very good recommendations. Bless you dear!

Hid your hair under a wig for a few months. Once the nape catches up with the rest of your hair you will be less likely to pull it :)

I don't have much advice for you but thank you for being honest about your hair pulling. I do it to and for the same reasons you gave. I mainly pull my hair from edges too. I can't seem to stop. I managed to grow it to about 6 inches last year, but I pulled it all out when I got stressed. I really want to grow it back but at the same time I can't stop pulling it.

I wear hair scarfs at home, but even that doesn't stop me. I take them off and once I've realised what I've done I put it back on again.

I think I do need to do something else with my hands when I feel the urge.

Thank you for your honesty.

I thought I was the only one. I have tried so many things to stop the pulling and nothing works. When I say everything I mean everything.

I am going to take whatever suggestions I can get and go with. Hopefully I can get some good results.

I'm a puller too.:nono: I do it subconsciously and consciously, out of boredom, stress, you name it. My right side isn't as bad, as I usually favor pulling the left side. My left side looks almost exactly like yours in the video. I'm in this with you. I will focus on moisturizing and keeping my hands out my hair.

Girl I used to pull the heck out of the left side of my head. It was bad. I'd do it without even thinking about it. To the point my hair was several inches shorter than the other side. The only thing that stopped me was installing braids for the whole summer because I didn't do something I'd be bald. I couldn't get to my hair to pull and the urge to do it lessened to the point I rarely do it any more.

If you look up "sista with real hair" on YouTube she has had issues with her nape and she has grown it out considerably. She has videos on how she achieved it as well. Keep it moisturized and avoid manipulating it. Castor oil will help thicken it up. I have had awesome progress with Vatika and Alma oil. I started researching what East Indians of for their hair growth and retention and I am going to try to follow some of their methods as well. Moisture and low manipulation will do wonders. Reniece was not able to braid my nape up in a sew in last July and now I have it braided up in box braids, after a few setbacks. Also scalp massages do wonders.

dontspeakdefeat I have the exact same problem, I pull my hair out at my nape and temples.

what MileHighDiva suggeted has worked well for my edges (i kept them in loose cornrowed styles so that I could not get to them) and they have come in nicely.

HOWEVER since I stopped pulling at my temples I went HAM on my nape.

now my nape is always cornrowed so that I cant get at it (my stylist was happy that she could didnt have to fight to cornrow it this last time I went to her)

Also for me its important to consciously stop myself when I find myself pulling my hair.

Thanks for all the suggestions. It does help to know that I am not alone.

So far the only thing I can do is twist it. I have been keeping it moisturized with castor oil. As soon as it gets long enough to braid ill do that.

I'll also go check out Sista with real hair.

Thanks a bunch.

I should also add that I do have ADD and hair pulling is just one of the things I do (unfortunately) to self soothe, it has also proven to be the hardest to break

I lost my nape 1 year ago. I had an allergic reaction. It was less than an cm long and I had a bald spot the size of a quarter. It is now 5 inches long and better than it has ever been.

I started off oiling with jbco and weldeda hair oil but that didn't last.

What turned it around was watering it every day and using a protein conditioner and a moisturizing conditioner. Every shower I would wet my nape, use Mill Creek Keratin conditioner or their Biotin conditioner, rinse, apply Curl Junkie Curl Rehab coconut hibiscus and rinse. I did this every single day. Actually depending on your hair (mine loves protein and it needed the strength) I used the Mill Creek every other day or daily, but I used the Curl Junkie Curl Rehab every single day.

I would moisturize and seal after. I didn't use any growth aids or massage. I would coil it around my finger as it grew longer, then twist or braid it up and leave it alone.

It sounds like a condition called trichotillomania. Some people are treated with therapy and medication. Please speak with your doctor maybe they can refer you to a specialist who can assist with strategies on how to quit.

In the mean time I would braid the area up so you can not pull it.

Good luck

Yes. Someone on YT pointed this out to me as well and I never realized that it is a condition. I actually viewed a lot of the others with this condition and I am thankful that I am not nearly as extreme as others.

Right now I have it twisted up and when it gets long enough to braid, I will do that.

Thanks!!

These are the links to sista with real hair YouTube videoes about her nape and I believe these are the only videos that she made regarding her nape. I have not viewed all of her videos but the ones that I have seen I like (for the most part). She flips her head a LOT in most of her videos and it gets annoying but she has some nice progress and she retains just about everything that she grows. If I can retain everything that I grow for 1 year(well more like 2-3 years...lol) then I will be well ahead of the game...

Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize! That's what helped mine
grow. I used Miracle 10 Spray, its really good!

From a stylist to a stylist:

I have helped a number of my clients grow their nape out entirely with.....

finger waves. :look: Yes, finger waves.

Believe it or not, finger waving that area inhibits breakage. If you are wearing a weave and that area is going to be covered anyway, better to rock a "style" that will allow you to keep that area untouched with no manipulation from wash to wash. And yes, you can fingerwave natural coily hair. The nape hair has to be SUPER wet and the gel super strong, like Redken hardware 16. Use it's a 10 with keratin leave in spray before you apply the gel. Maybe that'll work for you.

I'm confused...finger waves promotes or inhibits retention?

dontspeakdefeat. So sorry you're going through this. You may want to seek the help of a professional to deal with the trichotillomania. I have heard of this before and in extreme cases people end up almost completely bald. :(

My DD has the same hair in your nape all over her head, so I had struggled for a while to keep moisture in her hair, especially her nape. Her hair in general is doing great, but her nape and edges are super sensitive like yours. I keep the nape braided down in a horizontal cornrow (not tight) separate from the other hair. This is helping. I keep this braid in for weeks at a time, but I moisturize it daily to every other day with a spray leave in and seal with a heavy oil or cream. Her nape was broken off due to bonnets and it is doing better than ever. The key for her is extra extra moisture in that area.

Hope you find something that works for you.

I have never seen finger waves on natural hair, well not any 4's.

I will be getting some wigs made so I can keep my hands out of my hair. I haven't pulled my hair as much recently. I still feel the area from time to time but no where near what I used to do. My condition is no where near as bad as those I see on YT.

Thanks a lot. Those videos were very helpful. I need to try that when my hair gets long enough.

OOOOoooo. That's interesting. I do get it though. Girl I haven't done a finger wave since cosmo school. It's worth a try though. Thanks a bunch!

Thanks a lot. I am just thankful that I don't have it as bad as the others I saw in the videos. I definitely will pick up on my moisture regimen.

I keep seeing women (grown) with hair braded around hairline and nape and wondered if this helps in re-growth. My hairline and nape are like someone else's hair. Especially right nape - thin, weak 4(b) when balance of hair is 3(b) and (c) -- can't figure it out. I had been using blue star ointment on right nape because it seems irritated. But I am going to try the braiding thing that you suggest below.

I did a video on about my hair pulling. I feel so anxious just typing about it. I actually saw the damage I've done to it. It's pretty bad. I'm going to be concentrating on growing it back this year.

I will be incorporating lots of castor oil massages and keeping it braided. Lord I didn't realise it was that bad.

Apparently its a form of self harm... I don't see it that way though :-/
