If I knew a Hair dye could do this then....

I was just reading up on PDP today. That is probably why they tell you to do a patch test first. Which of course I've never done :nono:

i lost a patch of hair from having an allergic reaction to Silk Elements jet black hair color. that stuff was itchy, rashy, etc... i never had a bad reaction to color before.

sorry if I laughed:grin::lol:....but instead of taking pics he should have got himself to a dr or taken an antihistamine:nono:

That's one reason why I stopped using dyes with PDPs. Google "beijing hair dye allergic reaction" and you will see countless stories. Even with a patch test, you can develop the allergy over time.

The scary thing is you can become allergic to it, even if you have used it before with no problems. Do a patch test every single time. I have a PPD allergy. I can't even wear human hair anything forget dyeing my hairま.

I can't see any mentions on my IPhone. PM me if it is a must see. Allons y

That happened to my good friend last year after her hair stylist used the same hair dye she had used for years. She sent me photos. Not only did her face swell but her skin became scaly. It was so awful that she was wearing long sleeves and gloves to work when it was barely fall. Steroid injections helped. She is the reason I used henna for my first dye job instead of regular hair dye.

It can happen with natural dyes too, i had reaction to indigo and lost 4" of hair. Patch test everything.

You need to patch test every time because you just never know. Personally, I'd have been getting myself to an emergency room as soon as I saw my face blowing up.

He should've done a patch test first, idiot. Now he's walking around looking like Willy Lump Lump.

wow, i would have freaked out thinking im about to die but he takes pics....i guess facebooking an allergic reaction is more important than going to a hospital.

LexiDior,
You know!

Once my friends and I were out dancing. We'd been there awhile when one of my friends was being escorted out with her head swollen. Off to the ER she went. She had unknowingly eaten something with MSG in it.

One night I went to bed normal. By six the next morning, my jaw looked like I was smuggling grapefruit. Off to the ER I went. Turns out I had an abscess.

I don't know whether to blame it on his being young or being addicted to social media but he wasn't taking the situation as seriously as he should have.

Question for everyone: swite, Ltown, HanaKuroi cocosweet Curly1908

When you do a patch test, how much/large of a section to you test? If its something like 1" is that enough to know if you'll have an anaphylactic relation to it? Dermal is one thing but anaphylaxis is another.

Do hair stylists patch test their clients? I never had one done.

The instructions always state to do a patch test. I never do. I know plenty of other people don't either. It's a chance you take... :nono:

@greenandchic,

I never had one done.
I'm sure some stylists do, but back in my salon going days, I never saw a walk in customer who wanted color turned away. They got colored that day.

Unfortunately, I don't know the tipping point on how much PDP can trigger anaphylaxis in someone but with a patch test, you will find out if you'll have some sort of irritation which lets you know you shouldn't proceed further.

greenandchic, I never done a patch test:nono: is why I had a reaction but I've read that you put on small amount of the product.

I did a strand test with about 1 inch of shed hair. I pulled it from my brush over the course of a few days.

I did a patch test on my skin with the exact mix I planned to use on my hair. I let it sit for an hour on the inside of my elbow, about a 1 inch circle. I took photos and added the skin test to my youtube channel.

I had a bad reaction to a "black henna" tattoo a couple of years ago that really was not 100% henna so I did not want to take chances.

I've never seen a salon do a patch test or a strand test on a client before doing color. My old stylist was great at color and had lots of clients for just color. Again, never saw her do a patch test on anyone's skin.

This happen to DH on a CRUISE....it was a warning of further bad things to come. He went to the ship doctor that administered an antihistamine His had became huge plus a bunch of pimples and rash at the hairline around the ears......the skin discolored and required six months use of a fade cream. Obviously we didn't take formal pictures on that cruise.

The cruise was awful and when we got off the boat, we were stranded for three days due to a snowstorm in these parts.

Guess what....he's now using that temporary coloring spray that washes out easily. I've told him numerous times to just go GRAY.

This happened to me before my face was bad and my lips got so huge I looked like Professor Klump and my eyes were swollen practically shut. Even my hands were swollen.

I can't remember what the cause was at the time. Probably was some hair dye. But a course of prednisone had me back to normal. My parents had to pick me up from college as I walked out the dorm covering my face- that was a Saturday and I was back to normal on Tuesday. Just thinking about it makes me itch.

i do about an inch or so near the nape so that i can easily access it and compare it to the surrounding area to see if i've had a reaction. i cut the strand from that area that i want to strand test first, then I proceed with the patch test. never really measured it, but its usually about a 1/2 in to an inch in width

i've never had an anaphylactic reaction but i'd assume local anaphylaxis would manifest in the form of swelling to the area, redness, burning and/or itching.

to assess the swelling/redness, it's smartest to do it near the edge of your nape so that you can see if the swelling/redness radiates past your hairline. that way you can see if the skin looks different from untreated skin without hair being in your way.

i don't think systemic anaphylaxis would be hard to assess, lol. once your tongue starts swelling and you can't breathe i'm sure you'd have already called an ambulance?

Wow!! I'm thinking about dying my hair tomorrow. Maybe I will do a skin test. How long does a skin test usually take? Would I be able to color my hair the same day as the tesT?
