Should the strand test be done right before I relax?

I'm a little confused about this I'm going to be doing a Phytorelaxer soon(my first self relax). Since I have to put the relaxer on a section and rinse and neutralize, am I doing this right before I actually relax my entire head. Is a few days before better? If I do the strand test in the back do you just cover everything else with a shower cap so it doesn't get wet?

I guess Im concerned I'll inadvertently get the chemicals on the another section of hair that I'm not testing.

When I did a strand test before using Silk Elements, I actually cut a small section of hair out of my crown (with the coarsest NG) and relaxed it. Yeah, yeah, I know, some of you think that scissors are evil. I never even considered doing the test on hair still attached to my head. Hmmmm.
