Hi RHBD! Can you post some info or a link on the silica? I don't have any info on silica being cancer-causing and I sure want to know right away so please do share with us. A lot of us are taking Vitamin World Brand which also has silica in it. School us please! :) Thanks!

I sent an email to Vitamin World for more info about the type of silica being used in their MSM. Making sure it was not "crystaline silica" which is, indeed, classified as a "known carcinogen" and is responsible for lung/kidney/lymphatic cancers in some people who worked in environments where it was present (i.e. similar to asbestos). I will post the response when I get it.

doesn't specify msm but it says its ok in supplements.

wow, it also says....

"SAFETY

Aside from silicosis, which refers to the condition in which silica is taken into the lungs, silica supplements, herbal and food sources are non-toxic
."

That's interesting. Is it possible that something can only be toxic inside the lungs and NOT in the bloodstream? C'mon Chemists!

i found this too.

Silica. By itself, silica is not harmful, but it’s often contaminated with crystalline silica which causes cancer. Manufacturers are not required to list contaminants so you’ll never see it on the label.

How big of a threat are contaminants to you and your family? From 1978 to 1980, the FDA analyzed 300 cosmetic samples for carcinogenic contamination. Forty percent of the samples analyzed contained carcinogens. Things actually got worse the next time they analyzed cosmetic samples. In 1991-92, they found that 65% of the cosmetic products sampled contained carcinogenic contaminants. More Recently, in 2004, the Environmental Working Group evaluated the ingredients in 7,500 personal care products for safety. They found that "nearly 70% of all products contain ingredients that can be contaminated with impurities linked to cancer and other health problems."

cbc, i don't get how if i swallow it, its cool but if i breathe it, its not. maybe going through the digestive system alters it in some way:confused: science is weird. and scary.

I feel you. And, not only that but, why aren't manufacturers required to list contaminants on the label? WTH is that about? So, only cigarrettes are required by law to list it but cosmetics, which 70% tested positive for carcinogenic contaminants are NOT required? I suppose it would kill the cancer-fighting industry (translation: MONEY) if everyone stopped using anything that causes cancer. *hmpf* :( I'm a bit miffed. Anyone else?

Okay....Here's the answer from Vitamin World about their MSM Powder with silica received via email.....

Dear (CBC),

Thank you for contacting Vitamin World through our website. We appreciate your interest in our products.

The vendor uses Amorphous silicon dioxide as a flow agent in the production of MSM.

Below is a quote from the [Federal Register: May 15, 2002 (Volume 67, Number 94)] [Rules and Regulations] that discusses the difference between Amorphous and Crystalline silicon dioxides.

"Silica can be divided into two types: crystalline and amorphous. The major toxicological hazard of crystalline silica is through the inhalation route of exposure. Silicosis and/or cancer can result from long-term inhalation of the crystalline form (such as crystalline quartz). However, exposure to amorphous forms of silica is not associated with silicosis or cancer. In fact, IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) has classified crystalline forms of silica when inhaled from occupational exposures as Group I, carcinogenic to humans. The IARC has classified amorphous forms of silica as Group 3, not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans."

Thank you again for contacting Vitamin World. If you have any further questions, our Product Information Specialists can be reached toll-free at #1-800-228-4533, Monday through Friday, 8am-1am EST. We look forward to serving you in the future.

Cordially,

Michelle
