What are your opinions on secular music. Will you accept some of it or all of it is trash? Im trying to wean myeslf off that awful 'music' I listen too. The words are horrible and degreading but I always catch myself humming the tune... *sigh* All opinions are welcome....

Ooo good topic Bey. I pick and choose what music is appropiate to listen to. I used to listen to everything they played. Now anything that contains flipping hoes:eek: , bustin' guns:confused: , selling "snow":ohwell: , I don't listen to it. Also, the way I used to listen to music was by watching music videos but these music videos are all just  soft-porn:eek: now so I cut that out. Seeing that that was the only way I listened to music, I hardly hear music on my own now. Only when I see my bf I hear music. I listen to a lot of rock too and rock music doesn't have the language that the Rap has unless it's heavy metal or some satanic band... you gotta watch out for those. So I just basically don't listen to anything that is graphic or makes me feel uncomfortable:) YUCK like "Laffy Taffy":( What's funny too is a lot of the material I took in before God and I had a close relationship, I would not be able to take it in now. I used to jam to "Oochie Wallie"  Don't worry girl, you still get to have fun. There are a lot of appropriate music you can get into:) Reggae is the only music I'll listen to that talks about women and smoking because in my opinion they're not graphic and I looove to dance in ways some Christians may not agree with:look: and reggae makes it happen:lol: I'm sorry but I'm from Trinidad and all I know how to do is wine my waist:lol: Anyway Bey, you'll have to pick and choose. If you feel what you are doing or listening too is wrong that's the Spirit convicting you so you're not alone in your walk:)

I kno what you mean. I remember when that Fabolous song came out, "Can't let you Go" the song was basically about him cheating on his wife with some girl and being okay with it. I was like, "uh uh no this song is so wrong, it is glorifying adultery" but darn that catchy tune:mad: That song was stuck in my head. Yet another way the devil is a liar, he makes devious things appear attractive:mad:

Yeah some of the stuff out now is just straight trash and I started to become convicted over listening to it a long time ago. Then I was frustrated because I love R & B and love songs because I am married and love my husband. So now I carefully choose artists that I feel speak of love and life without going over the top and I just wear those cds out. Just recently I purchased Heather Headley's cd. I am just careful so that the music does not tempt me or give me crazy thoughts. Overall, anything I don't want my children to listen to, I won't and just allow the Holy Spirit to guide you in your selection. Q

I choose what I listen to. Because not all secular is bad IMO. I don't like to listen to music that has cursing in it, or that's degrading, so more times than not its either music talking about real love... married people singing about their s/o, neo-soul, soul, jazzy feeled, and gospel. I do classical ever so often, but that's about it. Yeah, sometimes I have to catch myself now, because music can bring all kinds of thoughts out from under the surface.

sigh...this is something I am slowly working on too. I have been dancing since I was a kid, so sometimes I find it hard not to jam something that has a good crunk beat even if the lyrics are bad. I guess this is something I should pray more about.

Being the music buff that I am, I'll be the FIRST to admit that it's DIFFICULT for me to stay away from secular music. I've studied music all my life and unfortunetly, there's a lot of secular music out there that's PURE GENIOUS minus the lyrics.

HAVING THAT SAID, a lot of the secular music, IMHO, is straight trash--not just lyrically but, musicianship wise, production, recording quality, vocally, etc...so it's actually getting easier and easier for me NOT to listen to secular music. I think the industry needs a drastic change--one of my DREAMS is to see urban/popular be REAL music--music with substance--music with an actual MESSAGE--but that's a whole nother thread.

...I could go on and on about this topic girl, don't get me started!

i think it is all trash. rock, country especially, rap, r&b, pop, hip hop, whatever. a lot of people continue 2 deal with certain issues b/c the music they listen to encourages it. Ex: problems w/ sexual things--why are u listening to check up on it and humps? Ex. 2: can't get over your ex--why are you listening to don't forget about us and I'm sprung?
A lot of music out there glorifies things God doesnt want us to have. I'm not criticizing 'cause i still listen to mos def & talib kweli. But the majority of my music is Christian. There are plenty of Christian artist who have good crunk beats to dance off. I listen to classical also.

WOW! I needed to read this thread today! You brought up a really good point about issues that we try to deal with and music encouraging the problem.
