Sometimes I can view icons and sometimes I cannot. I get so frustrated seeing others use them so easily when I have to cross my fingers in the hopes of seeing them.
When you don't see them, you have to go to the "post icon" on the left and choose the item and then click it into the post; it is really annoying when they don't just show up on the screen for you.
