What happens to hair that it starts 2 dry out, we have 2 moisturize, and need leavins

A couple of things i dont understand.....

When you shampoo, Deepconditon & Oil, then seal your cuticles.......Shouldnt your hair have all of the moisture it needs and not be able to take anything else in?

Why if you dont put anything else on your hair after rinsing out the conditoner & oil does it dry...dry?

Why does the leave-in or any moisturizer even absorb into the hair after washing if you closed the cuticles of your hair? (If your cuticles arent closed untill your hair is dry, then that goes into my next questions)

If you normally wash 1-2x a week and go longer, why does the hair get dry?

If you moisturize the day before....why do you have to moisturize the next day or the day after?

Im just wondering if our cuticles are always open....maybe slightly open and we can only partially close them? I read somehwere that black hair has cuticles that are permently lifted but i didnt beleive it. Do your cuticles open back up after a certain amount of time?

(If none of these things apply to you....why do you think that happens to avoid the "my hair doesnt do that." and im still clueless LOL"

All I know is that a little washing and conditioning is not enough for my relaxed hair. Relaxed hair has "special needs". As far as I am concerned my hair has no cuticles and needs all the help it can get!! I need my moisture and my leave-ins. Sometimes I don't need it daily, but the cold weather is making it impossible for my hair, skin or nails (cuticles) to remain moist without some kinda help. :) Some ladies say all they need it water and oil. I wish! Not me, I need all the conditioning agents and humectants I can get to keep my hair supple!

Maybe the products you're using are sufficiently moisturizing? Do they contain a lot of cones, and is your conditioner really a "deep" conditioner?

I shampoo, dc and apply a leave-in to my hair once every 3-5 days and then rollerset my hair. My hair requires no additional products or moisturizers until the next time I wash it, although I do use olive oil occasionally for shine.

I used to think that I needed a daily moisturizer since my hair is thick, but I haven't used one in months and my hair looks and feels better than when I was using it.

ETA: I may have misread the OP (saawwwwyyy :))!
Anyway I do think that a leave-in conditioner is necessary for my relaxed hair mainly because I don't like how oil feels on wet hair. When I was natural I didn't need oil or a leave-in because I co-washed daily, and that gave my hair pleeennntttyyyy of moisture!

Depends on the state of your hair BEFORE you shampood/DC'd/Oiled - if it wasn't fully moisturized then, I don't think it's going to come out fully moisturized after a single treatment.

Why if you dont put anything else on your hair after rinsing out the conditoner & oil does it dry...dry?

I think because the conditioner isn't 'designed' to provide enough moisture on it's own - and all the oil does is lock in any moisture the hair is already holding onto....

Why does the leave-in or any moisturizer even absorb into the hair after washing if you closed the cuticles of your hair? (If your cuticles arent closed untill your hair is dry, then that goes into my next questions)

I don't think that your cuticles are ever perfectly closed (as is, closed so tightly that the tiny molecules of water that are 'stuck' inside can't escape.

If you normally wash 1-2x a week and go longer, why does the hair get dry?

Because the moisture evaporates from the hair.

If you moisturize the day before....why do you have to moisturize the next day or the day after?

Because the moisture evaporates from the hair.

I think that curly hair, in general, tends to have slightly open cuticles by virtue of the curve - if you are laying 'flat' scales over a 'curved' surface, there is a likelihood that the curve itself will cause the flat scales to not be completely flush.

I think that as the moisture evaporates from your hair, the cuticles lift - in other words, the drier your hair, the higher the cuticles...

Also, I think that the pH of your hair shifts - from exposure to water, products, etc, and that will cause your cuticle to lift. It doesn't matter HOW tightly closed your cuticle is when you get out of the shower, if you put on something that changes the pH in a way that will cause them to lift right back up....

Hmmm I don't know about this one. I wish I could help. I wash or co wash everyday, or every other day at least. I dry condish, shampoo my scalp with diluted poo, DC with heat, then add a little coconut oil to my wet hair and let that air dry. My hair is never dry (but thats of course cuz I do it so often). So I'm really no help I guess. Have you tried co-washing maybe? This helps keep the hair moist. And its been great because I don't need any additional products but my coconut oil. I apply a light leave in because I like the way it smells. Wow, I'm stumped. :perplexed

Our hair has a propensity for dryness because of the shape of our hair follicles- since our hair is porous- it absorbs- but that doesn't insure that your hair wont get dry again. Its the nature of coiled hair and moisturizing daily is part of the upkeep. The elements we are in sun. wind, rain., pillowcase, clothes, also dry our hair out so we do as a group have to moisturize more.
I moisturize daily. Most kinky hair specialists advise adding moisture daily. It helps us to retain length cause our hair wont break off because its too dry.
Hope this makes sense

I know :lachen: And what exactly does cold weather do? All i know also about that issue is that the cold weather will make your lips chapped and your skin & hair dry if you dont take extra care.

My hair def. cant do it on water and oil, but it acts alright if i at least use a good shampoo and conditoner....but it feels so much better with the whole works.

See i've only heard of a few people that could do what you do....and they were mostly natural, or had a lesser (lesser :nono:) curl pattern.

When you cowashed, you would just rinse the conditoner out of your hair, apply nothing, and your hair would be soft and evertyhing? Wow.

So im guessing it all has to do with the health of your hair and cuticles.
Natural hair is more healthy than relaxed so its going to need less, and less curly hair cuticles arent going to be as lifted...naturals either i think....

Anyway thanks for answering:yep:

Actually this is my weekly regimen too. Only I wash 1x a week (pre-poo w/ protein if necessary, poo -Allways Moisturizing Poo, DC - Nexxus Humectress, seal cuticles w/ Porosity Control, leave-in - Salerm 21, seal with coconut oil). During the week I fit in 2-3 co-washes with Hello Hydration (mixed with castor oil and SAA), occasionally I'll do a quick rinse out with Porosity Control if I think I need it, seal with coconut oil. It's been THE best thing for my hair and it never seems dry. I rarely apply a daily moisturizer, havent needed to - in the dead of winter . Every few days depending on how often I co-washed that week I will apply a little Salerm 21 and seal with coconut oil and go.

Hair's been like a dream 8 weeks post relaxer, and I'm planning a 14-16 week stretch.

I do agree with a lot of what nappywomyn has said.:yep:

I also read somewhere that if you're relaxed, then the cuticles never close completely, which produces moisture loss over time.

Thanks Nappy and Nappity! That made perfect sence. :look:

I read that too Sunshine

Foxie, i think ima give cowashing another honest try for at least a month, everyone raves about it, it must be good --i tryted cheap conditoners that other people used, but my hair never likes those to begin with so that was wrong, ima try it with silicon mix, and ors packets

Thanks songbird, I had found out ways to keep my hair moisturized, but i was just sitting here wondering why it was really nesscary to moisturize daily, i've only read it as a rule, so i was confused why we had to if we sealed our cuticles. I baggy and i think its the equivallent of like deepconditoning nightly, but im gonna try cowashing, it must work just as good if not better.
