What is Split Ends?

Hello everyone,
My hair is getting healthier and I don't want to cut or even trim it until it reaches my back and then I will cut it until my shoulders. I am wondering what is split ends? Is it when your hair is really split or does it mean that your hair is uneven?

when you look at individual strands, if you see a strand that splits into two at the very ends then that strand is split...sometimes people have splits that arent at the ends too
