Forcing Faith

In a deeply divided Supreme Court decision on June 30, 2014, it was determined that certain for-profit companies cannot be required to pay for some forms of birth control if it goes against their religious beliefs. Two companies—Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood Specialties—say they are committed to operating their businesses in harmony with biblical beliefs.

The companies felt the Affordable Care Act violated the First Amendment and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) by insisting they provide employees with abortive contraceptives like the “morning-after pill,” which can potentially destroy the life of an embryo. While both companies already provide the majority of contraceptive coverage required under the ACA, the court upheld their desire for this narrow exemption.

The decision brings to light the challenges of faith-based organizations and individuals when religious freedom and new health care laws cross paths. The court’s ruling reaffirmed the 1993 RFRA and continues to protect religious liberty for people from many different faiths.

The case also highlights a bitter struggle that repeatedly comes up between political parties. Should the government be allowed to dictate the personal moral beliefs of every citizen? Where do we as a people draw the line? Ironically, this fight over religious freedom has put those with quite different religious beliefs on the same side—something increasingly happening as subjective secular ideology conflicts more and more with concrete Bible morality. This is something to watch closely!

The Bible also predicts that our religious freedoms will not always exist in the United States. The opportunities for spreading the everlasting gospel will slowly be removed as ruling powers begin to control people’s lives with tighter constraints, all in the name of safety and protection. Eventually, even the right to buy and sell will be dictated by laws based on religious restrictions (Revelation 13:11–17).

Many Christians are, of course, pleased with the Supreme Court’s recent decision, but our ultimate security should not be placed in the hands of flawed human leaders. God’s children are to be hidden in Christ, not policies that might be used someday to enforce moral beliefs. Prophecy tells us Jesus will soon return, and the liberties many now enjoy will slowly be removed by a power that seeks to divide our loyalties from our Supreme leader.

No legislation should ever prevent the Christian from following the injunction: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength” (Deuteronomy 6:6). Faith cannot be forced.

Our loyalty to God is definitely being tested.

The test is to show those who are either standing for God evermore, or straddling the fence or falling (succumbing to the enemy of God).

"Choose you this day, whom you will serve

....as for me and my House (my family), we will serve the Lord."

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Burger fans are racing to grab ‘proud’ burgers from a chain in San Francisco whose ad campaign is going viral.
A Burger King in San Francisco began selling ‘Proud Whoppers’ over the weekend during the LGBT Pride celebration. The gay pride themed burger comes in a rainbow colored wrapper, and a matching crown.
“It’s a smart thing to do. San Francisco is a very diverse community,” ‘Proud Burger’ fan Youri Litvine said.
Others saw it as a public relations move.
“Personally, I find this to be corporate pandering to a group of people that they never cared about before,” Tom Urani said. He bought a burger to get the crown.
The campaign is set to end Thursday.

Dying for Your Faith

Would you be willing to die for your belief in Jesus?

The nation of Sudan is an extremely difficult place to be a Christian. On the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations in which Christians are targeted for their faith, this poverty-stricken country is ranked number 11. It labels Sudan as a place of “extreme persecution.” Islamic extremists there are responsible for killings, raids, forced marriages, arrests, and deportations. [1]

Meriam Ibrahim is a Sudanese Christian and new mother who was arrested on charges of apostatizing. While she was in prison awaiting trial last month, she gave birth to a girl. Two weeks later, she was formally sentenced to 100 lashes and death by hanging. Even though the court threatened her in an attempt to get her to renounce her faith, she refused and held firm to her belief in Christ.

Yet through the work of lawyers and heavy international pressure, and God's divine grace, the 27-year-old mother was eventually released from the death sentence.

Still, conservative estimates of Christian martyrs, those who die in direct relation to their witness, begin at over 1,000 per month and climb to as many as 10,000 per month. [2] Much of the debate on numbers of people who die as Christians centers on the definition of what it means to be a martyr.

Most all of these Christian organizations that track the numbers of martyrs agree on one thing: Dying for one’s faith in Christ is on the increase. [3] Jesus warned His followers what was to come. “Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved” (Matthew 10:21, 22).

The significant loss of religious freedom before Christ’s second coming will eventually reach a point where true followers of Jesus will not be able to “buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast” (Revelation 13:17). Those who will not cooperate with this beast power will be threatened with death (v. 15).

Sometimes we look with awe at people who lay down their lives as martyrs for the name of Jesus, yet we are unwilling to sacrifice ourselves in small ways every single day. Do we dare to witness for Jesus at the supermarket? Will we purchase and send Christian literature to a wandering adult child? Do we speak up when our neighbor asks, “You don’t believe in the rapture? What do you believe?”

We might be asked to lay down our very lives for Christ someday. But until then, let’s stand as witnesses for Jesus no matter where we go.

News reports are now saying that Meriam Ibrahim has been detained once again by the Sudanese government, this time for "fraud." It seems her family's ordeal is yet ongoing; please continue to pray for this situation to be quickly resolved.

WHY I AM NO LONGER A LESBIAN

Why I am no Longer a Lesbian

I started attending the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the fall of 2008. My children shortly after accepted an altar call and started baptism classes. After dropping them off the first time, I decided that I might as well stay and complete the classes as well and get baptized.

We were all baptized in May 2009 and became regular churchgoers. I had one big secret though. I was a lesbian living with another woman. It was like the elephant in the room that no one addressed.

As the months passed, that relationship fell apart. It was a very painful time for me, but that did not lead me away from the lifestyle. I started to date another woman, and one Saturday evening in June 2011, after I had been dating that person for about nine months, the Holy Spirit spoke to me. I heard Him say, “I am not pleased with your life.” I played dumb and responded, “What life? My life is fine.” But, I knew what the Holy Spirit was referring to. I knew, and God knew that I knew.

How Can We Extend Compassion to the LGBT Community Without Abandoning Conviction?

_____________________________________________________________________________

However, I did not give an immediate yes to the calling. As a matter of fact, I saw the person I was dating a few more times, but every time I saw her, I was so scared because I knew that I was in total disobedience to God. Eventually, after a couple of weeks of wrestling with how to tell her—and how to tell my family—I wondered if I should lie and tell her that I’m just not into her anymore. In my head, it sounded crazy to say, “I can’t see you anymore because God has called me out.”

Eventually, I did say ok to the Lord and submitted. I told the woman that I had received a calling from the Holy Spirit and that I couldn’t be in the lifestyle anymore. It didn’t matter anymore to me if she thought I was crazy. I knew I couldn’t make up an excuse, for that would be bearing false witness. Fortunately, she didn’t think I was crazy. She said, “I can’t argue with God.” She was devastated but understood.

Immediately after submitting to God, things got even more difficult. I missed her and felt very confused and desperate at times. It was then that I reached for my Bible and started to read and pray. I begged God for the strength to go on and start over. At that time, I had been living the lesbian lifestyle for the eight years and all my friends were lesbian; the places I went were events with lesbians. I had to learn a whole new way of living and being.

I prayed and told God that I was willing to come out of the lifestyle but that I couldn’t do it alone and needed His strength. He answered and led me to all the scriptures that showed His promises, and I realized that God really does have a plan for us and doesn’t expect us to do anything on our own. Verses like 2 Chronicles 20:15-22; Philippians 4:13; Romans 8:28; 1 Corinthians 10:13, 2 Corinthians 12:9; James 1:12; I Peter 4:12; 1 Peter 1:7; Romans 8:18; Ephesians 6:10-18; Hebrews 5:8; James 1:3 and Matthew 26:41.

So started my journey to recovery. It has been three years now since God called me out of the lifestyle. It was not easy; there was a lot of crying, praying and studying Scripture. I called on all the promises of God and, finally, about three months later, I realized that I was healed. I no longer wanted, thought about or was attracted to women. It was as though Christ had reprogrammed my mind. I certainly hesitated about testifying, but I can truly testify that by beholding, you become. I have by no means reached perfection, but I am on my way.

From this experience, I have come to believe that if a person is following Christ and wants to live as Christ did, they have to accept the precepts of God. We have to accept all of God’s words. If any person wants to start fresh with God, you can, and it starts with total submission.
