Watch out for this @Dominican Salons

I caught up with a Dominican friend of mine yesterday. She is all natural (beautiful curly hair) and we were discussing my natural hair journey. Her curl pattern is a lot looser, but still afro-textured, so we were trading tips and stories, when she told me that at my wedding she was transitioning. I thought she was already natural and she told me no, that her stylist had--without telling her--mixed a relaxer into her deep conditioner.

The stylist only came clean when my friend started asking about some treatment that was incompatible with relaxed hair. This was someone she really trusted and had never before had reason to question anything she was doing to her hair. When she read the riot act to her stylist, the stylist defended herself by saying a lot of Dominican Salons do this and it's really just like a texturizer and the hair is still curly, but goes straight a lot easier.

I had a ton of breakage when I was going to a dominican salon, but I attributed it to cheap shampoo and excessive heat. But one thing I noticed is that any time I got a DC, they always shampooed it out of my hair. I'm now wondering if that is because they were mixing relaxer in with it. When I told my friend this, she said her stylist did the same thing. So, just beware. I don' think it's everywhere, but given how down they can be on the "pelo malo," keep an eagle eye out for what they put in your hair--or bring your own!

I heard of a person having a DISASTER with their hair after refusing a relaxer at a Dominican salon when the stylist acted stank about dealing with such highly-textured hair. When she refused the outright application of the relaxer creme, the stylist mixed it into the conditioner. The client only figured it out when she got home and her hair started thinning and falling out...plus when she washed out her blow-out, the damage was obvious.

My BF wanted me to get a blow out at a Dominican salon and I told him HELL NO. Cuz I know they hate "kinky" hair or whatever you wanna call it w.o. being offensive (they probably say nappy)...and if you refuse a relaxer or BKT they will do what they want behind your back.

I'll be damned if I let sme1 in this head at all after all my progress and hard work, let alone sme1 at a Dominican salon b.c. this is mainstream practice with them! Once it hits your hair, the damage is done, and they know this. There is NO GOING BACK once the chemical hits the hair, and years of growth can be sabotaged. I will only press/blow-out, or flat-iron my hair myself.

That way I can conscientiously control the heat (no heat damage, which is also another prob w. Dominican blow-outs...ridiculous amts of heat). On a head of naturally curly or kinky hair, heat damage = some straight pieces that wont revert to curly, and also maybe some hair is actually burned off. You can only get rid of this by cutting the hair and re-growing.

Can't pay me to let anyone in my hair knowing how ppl get jealous and are often lazy and want to take the easy road on natural or curly hair. Thanks for warning folks :yep:...b.c. natural women should really take the decision to use a Dominican or other persuasion salon with care...they are NOT used to taking care of your hair like you are!

ETA: I havent been to a salon in over 4 yrs and I only went bck then for highlights! I'm a complete DIY'er--if there is something I desire to do to my hair that I've never tried, I research and educate myself on the process, then do it myself (I've never had any hair mishaps being a DIY'er). And see, I don't trust ANYONE in my hair but me. Even my mama chopped off 3-4" when I asked for a 1/2" trim, and used to rip thru my NG before applying relaxer (= BURN LIKE CRAZY). :nono:

I don't ever see using a salon for hair care again. I love massages, mani-pedis, but dont touch the hair!

This is the 2nd time I've heard of this on this board. It is absolutely crazy. Reason 2365478963 why I am telling my DD not to go to the dominicans.

I'm glad I have always been a diy type of girl when I was relaxed and I went for my weekly wash and sets I would wash my hair at home condition it then go to the salon with my hair in a plastic cap with my dc in it all I did was sit under the drier then get it rolled and it only cost me ten bucks all the time

Sorry, I missed it the first time. I'd never heard it, and haven't been to a dominican salon in years, but I am 100% convinced this is what broke my hair off.

So I'm mad late, huh? I am still so shocked at the number of people big uppin' the Dominican salons. Don't do it girls! :nono:

Smart girl. I would try this, except they would probably then fry my hair with their blowdrying. EEEK!

Girl you are NOT mad late, this is something that a lot of salons do but not all of them. I would not try not one of them myself though! Cuz knowing me I would end up bald-headed from tryna be cute and have that "white girl swang." :nono: lol

SN: I too am surprised at the amount of ppl who swear by Dominican salons, and their techniques for getting even the kinkiest hair bone straight. :look: But I'd rather spend 15 mins detangling a head full of healthy curly-kinky hair than risk losing it all b.c. of 1 salon visit! :yep:

I never new this. The first time I went to a dominican salon I asked about the egg mix. I make sure to pay attention. The good thing is that I have only had my hair done once at a dominican salon. My mom goes to one all the time. The good thing is that she is not natural.

This is really disturbing! Why would they do something that would alter the texture of your hair withou telling you. I would definitely take legal action.

Yessir! Yep Raleigh in da house! I moved to this area in '08. I keep hearing about a popular Dominican salon in Raleigh, and for a half second I considered it but then quickly remembered the mishap I found out about described below!

I sure don't need no Dominican salon...I'm very anxious and apprehensive about going to hair salons these days. Too many hair horror stories I guess!:perplexed

The funny thing is, I don't think these "dominican salons" in NC contain actual dominicans! LOL Where is the one you heard of (I visit home at least 2x's a year). The one across from my parents--I'm not sure what they are, but they didn't look like any dominicans I've ever seen! :lachen:

^IA with the above poster. I haven't been to the domincan salon in awhile since I'm transitioning, but the so-called dominican told my mom she was going home to Brazil to see her family!

Btw, I'm another raleigh girl!

Or simply because they want to be! That sure is alot of nerve, I tell ya! People take alot of time transitioning for someone to take it upon themselves to change that! I would be beyond pissed! Just so they can get your hair as straight and manageable as possible! Wow the gall! :nono:

ETA: Those of you who do go to DS's should either start DCing at home and putting a conditioner cap on, or bring your own!

Oh no!!! Yikes. THAT IS SCARY!

I just got a recommendation for a Dominican salon, but I'm wondering if it depends on the stylist and hair of the client? *shudders*

Wow. Why the heck would they take it upon themselves to change someone's texture? It's not their hair to deal with everyday. I go to a Dominican salon nearby occasionally (the only one!) and they're very pro natural. In fact, it was the owner there that encouraged me to go natural.

I hate stylists that push their idea of easy to manage hair on people. Do it right or don't do it all.

Tuh. I think I wrote about this before. I work in a natural hair salon and a client came in and told me that it happened to her hair. She probably wouldn't have even noticed except her hair started breaking off. I'm assuming it's because they are not neutralizing after the fact. I say if anything bring your own conditioner. And it's definitely not all Dominican salons because there are some really good ones out there.

i went to the dominicans a few times when i was relaxed, and they did a good job but i hated how packed they were on the weekends, and the heat was just extreme like it was filled with smoke from the blowdryers...i thought about going to them this fall but then i thought about the heat, and how far they are from my house...this is just the icing on the cake for me not to go.

This is the second time I've read about this on here, too. I will say both times it's been second-hand though....not that I'm not necessarily the "where there's smoke, there's fire" type, but still....

However, just like we can't generalize about ALL black stylists being incompetent, we can't say ALL Dominican salons are trying to jack up your hair. I spent most of my transition going to a Dominican salon back in VA (I'm now in Raleigh/Durham -- hey y'all!) and it was just fine. I actually had a really NICE stylist who kept me from chopping off all my hair when I thought that was what I had to do to go natural, and one who introduced me to Baba de Caracol and Lacio Lacio. Of course, I have seen the bad stylists....the ones who see you coming to their chair with your "pelo malo" and shudder in fear or flat out refuse to do your hair, but sometimes you just get a bad apple.

It saddens me when I see people who go on these tirades against ALL Dominican salons just as much as people who don't trust a Black salon -- not all of them are chop shops waiting to get hold of your hair and burn it into submission.

I agree that they don't all do this, but some people are so hot to try them out and don't know "the game" so I just want people to be careful (same way they are with the SHS of African American salons). My experience where I *think* they did this to me was after going to a salon in a new town after regularly going to one in my old town.

When I went back to the old salon on a visit, they told me chunks of hair were missing in the back of my head and showed me where they were in the mirror. It was ghastly. The method itself doesn't agree with my hair, and I see a lot of damaged heads at every dominican salon, even though the ladies have decent length. I can't speak to any other hair types, but it seems to me that Types 2 - 3 might be o.k., I don't think this level of heat and manipulation (or sneak relaxers) are good for type 4 hair.

Another raleigh girl (well use to be...recently moved) I went to diva's salon (dominican). Had to stop for many reasons. One of them was b/c they hate kinky hair. Every black girl that walked in there, including me, they would say how 'damaged' our hair was. Then whenever another dominican woman walked in they would fall all over her hair talking about this is the way 'our' hair should be. Disgusting. And the sad thing is...I kept going trying to make excuses for them. I'm glad I am transitioning again and can do my own hair now.

thanks op for posting! I've decided to just let them rollerset my hair. I'll wash n straighten (if need be) myself.

I saw one stylist putting what I thought was a relaxer in one lady's hair. I sat under the dryer mouth wide open gasping..i couldn't help myself..i felt like screaming "honey get out that chair!!" The stylist was putting on the white creme on her hair in globs like a deep conditioner (just too much of it though) and squeezing it in from root to tip. My sister later explained that she was getting a texturizer..is that how a texturizer is done? if soo i can definitely see how a sneak chemical app can happen at the sink

I went to a DS once years and years ago. Long before I found this board. However, even then after seeing (and experiencing) the heat for a doobie, I knew it wasn't a good move for MY hair.

I don't speak the language so that makes me even more unwilling to try with natural hair since I fear a mishap simply over miscommunication. But, to single handedly decide to relax someone's hair because you want to make your job easier certainly isn't the right way to get new customers. Add to this, that some are working with hair without a license...yeah pass in my book.

I have been going to my DS for about 3 years now. I won't say this thread won't make it hard if I had to find another salon, because I didn't know they were doing these things. I take all my own stuff to the salons, they know that is just how I am. They also ask to write down certain products because they like it. I don't get a blow dry and I know the smell of my products. I only use my own products.
