Moknowshair Opened A Salon In Nyc

I used to get poofy results at 450 but after getting my technique down I don't go past 400 and the hair is sleek and straight with body. I personally don't go past 375 on my hair though
I do 400-415 at the most. That gets my hair sleek. 375 will get it straight, but not silky. What product line do you recommend? I got a license, so that's not an issue.

Girl I was looking at your avi. Your texture is much more silkier/fine than mine.

I really like my combo of kms California tame frizz smoothing lotion and defrizzing oil. At first I didn't know how to use them and had puffy results. But now I got the hang of them especially when working with tightly curly hair. The hair has swang when I'm done lol

I like Moknowshair but I agree I think she does a great job styling her own hair. I personally would not pay those prices. She certainly is not Reniece, because Reneice knows how to slay type 4 hair effortlessly.

I have thick coarse 4a hair with some 4b and it does require high heat to get it sleek straight.

I just watched a video of her doing 4a-4c hair I think? And you ladies were right. She using too much product. The hair was stiff. She should have concentrated more on the washing/dc'ing part.

@shortdub78 Yeah, I believe that's part of the problem. The last time I went to the salon (yearrrrrs ago ) and had my hair straightened, the stylist used some serum before blow drying/flat ironing and that was about it. My hair was laid and swanging in the wind. Of course she had also used high heat as well.

Yep! That's all that is supposed to be used for a silk press. I think she directs too much attention on trying to avoid heat damage and trying to moisture the hair.

Her skills are mediocre at best. Her curly styles are better than her straightened styles. Your average Dominican salon will give WAY better results for a fraction of a price (albeit at the price of a good chance of getting heat damage). Even her clients with type 3 hair she did a meh job getting their hair straight, so I wouldn't dare going to her to straighten my coarse type 4 hair!
Don't Dominican salons have a reputation for being really brutal on type 4 hair, and often causing heat damage. I'm legit scared of them and would never go to any because of that rep. Well, I wouldn't go to most places ...

That's true. A popular Dominican salon I briefly worked at modified their blowdryers to make them even hotter! They just care about the look at the end.

I did let them straighten my hair once but found out later it was because they didn't like the look of my natural hair.

Yea you run the chance of heat damage, but that's the case really with any salon. They use very high heat, but I won't lie, the results are like no other. I've been going to a Dominican salon for the last few months and got my hair straightened with no heat damage. Granted my stylist is somewhat of an anamoly because she has a lot of knowledge of natural hair (she even styles natural hair and does loc maintanence).

Flat ironing above 370 results in heat damage for me. My nape, bangs and crown turn into ramen noodles at 400. 450 obliterates my curl pattern.
this makes sense with the findings on this site
http://www.thenaturalhavenbloom.com/2009/05/straightening-factshow-hot-is-too-hot.html

after reading that I stopped turning my iron up so high. i can get super silky straight at around 350-360 but my ends and midshafts need less heat to get straight so I've begun to only iron around midway down then go back and do the ends in big sections at lower heat. the midshafts to ends don't come out as shiny but at least i know I'm saving them plus they look thicker when straightened at lower heat/bigger sections.

I can't believe I used to use over 400 degrees from toot to tip too:nono: there was no reason for that at all.

Bumping again. I'm asking for a friend.

Has anyone been to Mo's salon relatively recently? Can you provide a review? Does she just know her hair, or does Mo Know Hair?

TIA!

@YvetteWithJoy, I went and would NOT recommend her at all...she gave me a good trim but the rest was a mediocre experience at best. Without going into more detail tell your friend to save her money. Other than the trim I could have done a MUCH better job. She is style challenged everyone she did before me looked the same and she talked them into layers. She did listen to what I wanted as far as trimming although she wanted to give me layers and cut my "V" blunt. She let me watch what she trimmed and didn't go beyond what I requested. Not that it should matter as a good stylist should be able to do anyone's hair but I have 3c hair.

 Daina, thank you!!!

My friend has Type 3 hair. I don't want her pressured into ANYTHING and only listened to. She needs to lose the relaxed part of her hair, and that's already a big deal without dealing with any iota of pressure.

There's a YouTuber's salon I wish I knew more about because I think that lady would get her through this major cut but I just don't know! I'll post it later once I'm home and ask the forum.

My big chop was an emotional day. Just the thought of it going poorly for my friend is not cool. I refuse to believe a great stylist in NYC at reasonable pricing can't be found. Getting a bad one is just too serious to risk, though.

@YvetteWithJoy, your welcome! Her prices are not reasonable either.

Have you friend go to Abena/EmbraceNBeauty. However, she's not in the city, she's in White Plains.

I sent my friend her info already, but my rec is just based on watching her video for years and about 12 styleseat reviews.

If I could kiss you right nowwwwww!

My friend's hair journey has been so teary. This salon visit really needs to go right.

Why do you recommend her?

ETA: I've calmed down now. :look: *blush*

I follow her on Periscope. She's natural herself, she knows "our" issues etc. She will not over trim/cut, knows that naturals want retention. Plus, she's gentle from what I can see.

Yup! Watching her on Periscope sold me on her for my own hair. If I ever get to visit a NY salon, hers will be the first one. Yes: She is all about retention. And, one reviewer's story about how hard she searched for the right products for the client's hair sealed the deal for me. She spends a lot of time with each client, too, from what I'm reading.

Thanks for the affirmation of thought.

I've been mentioning her on here for a hot second. Lordt. And I follow her.

She did a WNG on my work friends hair and it came out bomb. She cut a bit, but there was also a lot of cu damage from a previous experience. I would recommend her based on my work friend ending up with anreally good cut and experience. She loved her.

ETA: she is not in white plains but she she far up in the Bronx. Closer to Mt. Vernon.

Ooooooo! A review from experience!!! Yes! Thank you so much.

I'm so hype! :wiggle:

This bodes so well for my friend. Now I wanna go to NY and see Abena!

I'm glad that we have a real life testimonial from your colleague, and that your eyes witnessed the results.

Did she talk to your colleague about how much she was going to cut? And why? Or did she just do it?

She just moved over the weekend to White Plains into a styling suite. @Saludable84
