no offense

but i have a question to relaxed ladies. this question has been bugging me for a while. now dont go getting offended because i am relaxed too.
here is my queston.
why do SOME relaxed ladies relax so early as 4 weeks and say things like "i am so surprised my hair still has bounce"?
i dont get it. at 4 weeks some people barely have a half an inch. im just asking because i know everyones hair isnt the same but i relaxe 2-3 time a year and i never have problems with my new growth. i do wet buns and i wear my straight and i just dont get it.
sorry if this is a dumb question but i need to understand. sometimes these are the same women saying their hair grows so slow, so how can 4 weeks have enough new growth to alter your hairstyle or need a touch up?

I think there are a lot of women who as soon as they see one little kink around the edges, they think they need to get a touchup. Plus a lot of women have been brainwashed by stylists to get a touchup every month. My mother and sister went to one for years.

My stylist had to break that down for me. She said that when you get that 'new growth' feel at two to four weeks, just wash it. My sil used to do this. She said her hair grew like a weed. And like a weed, her hair wilted and she had to cut her BSL hair to NL. Might I add, she would highlight, flatiron and curl on the highest setting.

^^^I think she means that here at LHCF, we generally have healthy hair practices, so relaxing at 4 weeks is fairly foreign to us. But at the BSS you can usually find someone who does. HTH

I don't understand the question so I can't comment. Just wanted to clarify that point. :)

Go to your local bss and ask someone who looks like they would know. I don't think this site is the target audience for your inquiry lol.

:lachen:u showin' out. That was pretty funny.

OP..I've wondered this myself. One thing is because we all have different hair growth spans. My hair is slow, so every 4 weeks would be death to my hair.

However I personally know some ladies who get the slightest kink and want to relax. And have beautiful thick hair. I guess its about the structure and strength of hair.

Before I found the board, I relaxed every 4 weeks. When my edges got fuzzy, I relaxed. Didn't even have any newgrowth, I relaxed my whole head from root to tip with a super relaxer because my edges were fuzzy :perplexed

I just did it due to pure ignorance. I can't think of any other reason anyone would relax so often :ohwell:

thanx for the response ladies.
there are ladies on here who still relax so early which is why i have the question.

I admit I admit I relax every 5weeks. Yep I said it. My hair does grow fast. I wouldn't lie 1/2 new growth a month and I just can't manage it. Check out my siggy and see. I would try to stretch my perms longer like to 8weeks or so and truth be told my hair would shed and I would begin to break it off. I am so thankful for LHCF because I have learned how to properly apply a relaxer to only the new growth and not overprocess my hair etc.

I used to relax every four to six weeks because my hair grew very quickly and I always wore straight styles, so I didn't want to deal with any NG.

i did it when i didnt know better...just thought thats what i was supposed to do...aprx 5 weeks and relaxer here i came.

During the warm months I relaxed every 4-5 weeks. I get an inch a month of normal growth but during my high growth months I get anywhere from 1.5-2 inches a month. I don't like buns and ponytails and I wore my hair down 99.9999% of the time so I would relax it. My hair's health was never compromised because of it. If I ever relax again I'd do the same thing :)

lol. . .Seriously though, I really do think asking someone randomly there would give her more in depth answers. But ppl are giving some pretty good responses here for their past reasonings :yep:

OP: I have a friend that relaxes every 3 weeks and wonders the same thing *SMH*

I did this too. No one told me it was wrong and I didn't find out until I came here. I was doing mine maybe every 6 weeks root to tip. I thought that was what you were suppose to do. When it started getting a little thin I switched from super to regular and continued. When I first started this board I use to say that I didn't see any difference in doing my hair that way and my current reggie, but now I do. I see less shedding, healthy thicker hair. Now I don't if check for ng in the first few weeks and if it starts getting unmanagable I check my calendar to see when I'm sceduled for my next touch up.

Thanks, girl :)

wow. i guess if your hair grows fast then it shouldnt be a problem but i know some people hair grows really slow. if you go to a professional and get it done you run the risk of them overlapping though right?

It was ignorance for me. I use to relax every 6 six weeks because i was lead to believe my hair would break off if I didn't. It was ignorance for me. I am glad I found LHCF!!

When I had my Halle Berry cut, I went to the salon faithfully to get my relaxers every 4 weeks. My hair was so straight, everyone thought I was wearing a wig.

It did grow out to SL, but it was thinner than it should have been. I remember having a little it of breakage, but not enough to make me stop. I didn't start stretching until I came here, then my growth and thickness increased exponentially.

Also, I didn't know that you could flat iron the kinkiness away. Before my HAlle cut, I had always generally done my own hair and relaxed every weeks because I thought the only way my hair would be straight was with a fresh perm. Between relaxers, my hair always looked a mess because I would blow dry it, then curl the ends. It was never smooth and always slightly puffy. I think had I known about rollersetting or flat ironing, I would have been more likely to stretch out my relaxers.

i guess its hard to imagine when u dont have a quick growth spurt urself. In 4 weeks..there is no ng for me. Maybe a slight wave but thats it. I dont start seeing true ng til week 9+. Its still hard to imagine someone with major ng by week 4...but i guess it happens

:yep: Same here. My hair grows fast so 6 weeks seemed like 12 :look:. I am happy to have found LHCF also.

That is so true. Its amazing how straight you can get your hair with proper technique. I think alot of women probably wouldn't need to relax (if straight hair is their goal) if they new how to properly do this.

Right! I do my niece's relaxers, and she kills me calling after 6 or 7 weeks talking about she needs her perm:rolleyes:. All I have to do is wash, deep condition, and flat iron it, and her hair is swangin' and bouncin' like she likes it. I've got her up to 12 weeks now.

I used to think relaxing 2-3 times per year was for those with "good hair". My bf was like this, and I would tell her my hair was too thick and coarse to do that.:lachen:That's cuz my dumb butt never deep conditioned or detangled properly.

This is true Gym~ I didn't know how to get the new growth as straight as the relaxed part until LHCF:blush:. That helps to stretching relaxers and the different styles to do so the new growth don't look so noticable.:yep:

*Dumb question alert*

I've never had a relaxer so I wonder about this all the time. What do the directions on the relaxer box/kit/tub say? Like, does it say to only do it after a certain amount of time? to only relax the "new growth" and not the entire length?

:look:

You sounded like me. I would shampoo with creme of nature and blow dry with bone straight creme and would wonder why my hair wasn't "behaving" :lachen: My po head...I don't remember really using conditioner until I was like in the 7th grade :nono:

I am going to be doing the bolded hopefully until April which will put me at 6 months post.

It was hair hatered for me. Before this site, I hated my hair. I relaxed at 4 weeks new growth or not; now I relax 3 times a year. I have come to fall in love with my hair.

Aslo, I've inspired my sisters to do the same, when I started stretching, they were like, you are crazy.
