Cool blowdrying better than airdrying??

Ok so I was perusing through the what LHCF methods didn't work for you thread, and a LARGE number of ladies kept saying how horrible airdrying was. Now I found this intriguing because I've been a bunner for life (I always rocked a bun, long b4 LHCF just didn't moisturize properly:nono:), and I've always just washed, conditioned, airdryed or put product in damp and then made my bun. So anyway, my ends always look a little bent and can sometimes be crunchy due to this, but I paid it no mind. But I decided, since so many people were a fan, to try this blowdrying even though I wasn't going to flatiron and wear my hair out afterwards. I just washed and DCed, the blowdryed on cool till my hair was about 85% dry, then moiturized, sealed, bunned and tied my hair up. I really liked how smooth my cuticle felt when I was applying the moisturizer, and it felt like every strand was excepting it better than when I airdry. Anyway, woke up next morning and BOY was I shocked! My bun was sooo smooth and shiny! Looked like I had flatironed (that's the only time I get really smooth shiny buns)...and it just looked really nice:grin::grin: So i'm thinking this may be a new way I want to dry my hair frequently. Who used to airdry but now cool blowdries? I figure since it's on cool it cant really be doing damage, plus the cool setting may be smoothing down the cuticle allowing it to better except moisture and oil. Who had a bad experience with doing this frequently or who thinks this is a good idea?? I really would LOVE to hear opinions...

I normally bun as well & used to cool-blowdry........but stopped blowdrying & now air-dry my hair.
But i've noticed since airdrying, my hair looks kinda "poofy", even after smoothing it down with gel.
So i think i'm gonna try cool blow-drying again to see if it makes a difference.
Thanks OP for bringing this up.

So does anyone who does this have a blow drier that has an actual cool setting? Mine just has a "cool shot" button.

I've been posting about this since I came here in october. I've been doing this for sooooo many years. I cannot air dry cause it tears my hair up! Then I thought about how I use to dry my hair in front of the fan in the summertime, when I was a teen. I combined fan drying with my love for my ionic blow dryer, and Voila! LOL

I do this sometimes and I love the results. I air dry till im about 50 % dry, then I put it on high and press the cool shot button and I end up with smooth hair. I still air dry though.

I have only tried blow-drying on "cool" once. My biggest problem with it was that it took forever. Compared to blow-drying on warm/hot, it comes out about the same, just takes much longer. The hair obviously comes out much smoother than with just air-drying though. I've been experimenting with air-drying rollersets again too, and that smooths out my hair as much as blow-drying, but with loose curls instead of straight hair. The difference is that I don't have the paranoid fear of reversion that I get with blow-drying,. I haven't "upgraded" to a fancier blow-dryer yet, but my old Conair has a "cool" setting - it feels more like room temperature than cool though.

I have blow dried on the cool setting, using the tension method. once done, i've used NTM leave in, and a little bit of oil to seal. it works, but it just takes a while!

i have a cool shot button on my blow dryer but i tape it down so that it always blows out cool air. lol.

i'd go back to blow drying on the cool setting... the shedding is comparable to shedding with air drying. my only concern is getting my ends straight. usually, because i hold my hair tightly with a comb as a blow dry, my ends aren't perfectly straight.

i want to give air drying a chance just because it's the least time consuming! i air dried on wednesday night. co washed, used my leave in, moisturized with ORS olive oil moisturizer (in the jar) and then sealed with EVOO. my hair still isn't achieving the softness i want, at least on my ends. still trying to make sure i have the proper products to achieve that before i go back to blowing out on the cool setting...

Hi Ladies,

Maybe a daft question, but does the cool blowdrying option work if you have natural 3a/b - 4a hair? I have been using heat and blowdrying my hair to smooth out some of the tighter curls and then usually tie my hair back anyway but I would like to use minimal heat, so wondered if 50% airdrying and then using the cool dryer to stretch the curls would work?

Quick Update:

Well i Cool blowdried my hair today - instead of air-drying it & guess what?..........NO poofyness!
So looks like i'll continue Cool blowdrying, rather than airdrying.
I still applied some IC Heat protector & my hair came out nice & shiny & smooth.

I've been doing this since last June. It was the only way that I have found where I can airdry and still look half way decent. I use a soft bonnet dryer , this one

http://public.fotki.com/SelfStyled/2007/products/dryer.html. (PW is princess) I LOVE THIS DRYER!!! And they don't make them anymore- boo. I don't have a reg BD.

Anyways....the bonnet dryer has a cool setting, I do my leave in, serum, bun it cover with a scarf and I am good to go. I sit under cool for 30 min.

I do this 2-3 times a week and have suffered no damage at all.

For those that use a reg BD do you just aim the coll air all over your head. or do you comb as you go?

I have a blow dryer with a cool setting. . .I thought they all did lol. I usually blowdry on warm, but my hair sometimes dries too much with that. I might try a combination of both - starting out with warm n then switching to cool for the final minutes or something. Or maybe I'll blow my roots out w/ hot and then do the length on cool.

Walmart has a professional tourmaline/ionic HD with 3 temps including cool and three settings. It also has a cool shot button. They compare it to the CHI dryer (my sister has the CHI, but she likes mine better). The Walmart is about $50, the CHI is about $100+. Both the cool shot and cool setting are both "no heat" settings, and are very cold. I could never use these on wet hair because it is too cold for me to tolerate. I may try it if my hair is 80% dry - If Bootcamp and Ayurvedic will allow it.

I bun as well. Air drying only works for me with a fresh relaxer. Once my roots get into play, I have to use the bonnet dryer. When my hair was natural, I could not - would not - air dry with a bun.

I blow-dried on cool for a few months over the winter and my hair flourished. My ends benefitted the most and my hair thickened up. Weird, but I really like this method. I still do it, and my hair loves it.

after having a severe shedding moment with my last air dry, i think i'm going to blow dry on the cool setting tonight. using the tension method, and a seamless comb. it will proly take an hour to dry my hair. less shedding too since i won't be using the comb attachment.

i am so sick of roller setting during the week and going to bed at 2 am due to my hair... and i don't have a professional hood dryer yet.

Anyone else blow drying on cool lately? If so, are you using a ceramic/ionic blow dryer that has a cool setting?

I have the gold n hot version of that dryer. I bought it last year, you can find it in some BSS (NYC) and online. I've never used the cool setting though.

I always do this. It takes a lil longer but it saves my hair from the high hear damage. I still apply heat protectants though because I usually will flat iron on low afterwards.

This is definatly something I will try. The last time I blow dried my hair it dried my hair out a little. Drying on cool setting may be my remedy.

Can someone recommend a blowdryer that:

has a cool shot
fits a regular comb attachment from the BSS
is affordable

I do the cool setting with my blowdryer to about 75% dry to stretch my hair out (shrinkage is really something!). Then I put it on large rollers or twist it and let it airdry the remainder of the way.
