ANDRE WALKER TALKS AFRICAN-AMERICAN HAIR - OCT 2009

Yes. I never took the time to look him up. All I knew about him was that he created the hair typing system. I also heard people saying that it was created by white people. So, I concluded that he was a white man. :perplexed

lol That's funny.

I never saw him either, but I always just assumed he was black. Don't know why.

Oh ok, well he's been on Oprah's show many many times. Less in recent years, he's quite entertaining.

Yea I saw him on a few eppies he seems really sweet, sophisticated and low-key but he knows his stuff got Oprah PAST MBL that man is an EXPERT!!

He definitely knows what he's doing when it comes to relaxed hair, I loved that he spoke on stretching relaxers at least 2 months. What he said about natural hair was surprisingly inaccurate I'm not limited in the least by my tightly coily texture as a matter of fact my hair is WAY more versatile now then it ever was relaxed, but hey, he really knows how to hook up some relaxed hair Oprah's hair is straight fire.....I mean thats just FLAWLESS. If I was relaxed I would follow his every word, but really the ladies on LHCF provide the best education for the newbies:yep:

It has been my understanding that Oprah is not relaxed. She is a natural.

I don't think the comment on natural hair is controversial. It just is what it is.

I disagree with having to buy the most expensive products statement. Spoken like someone who is about to come with their own product line.

He actually said "the most you can afford" or something like that. I didnt take that to mean the most expensive products you can find. If a budget only allows for a 2.00 shampoo and conditioner, then that is what that person can afford....

:yep:I thought so too untill her most recent eppies with Chris Rock where she stated she's relaxed.

That picture with her hair blown out all natural (before they relaxed it) is one of my hair goals:infatuated:

Mine too!

That's why I can't even really bring myself to say anything about Andre even though I don't agree with every single word that comes out of his mouth. Oprah's hair is amazing!

:yep:My thoughts exactly:yep:

Some of the things he says might make me give him the side-eye, but the proof in the in the puddin and Oprah's hair when it was natural and now that they relaxed it is a DREAM plain and simple.

**Also to the people wondering if she's relaxed or natural, go back and watch the episodes where she had chris rock on, she showed herself with her blown out natural hair and she said "That was my natural hair before we put the relaxer in it"** I thought she was natural too for a good while there.

Everytime I blow my hair out I point to the mirror and go "I'm getting close!":giggle:

So what he grew Oprah's hair to MBL in 24 years.
That means he doesn't really know what he's doing... LOL!
Unless she wanted to keep it short.

Oprah's hair looks nice and thick, but I don't think he has any great insight into the world of natural hair...

He changed my life, him and Cathy Howse. I had a complex on 4b hair, until I read his book. That was the first time I heard my hair type described as "kinky".

That's true.

You really think that her length was short because it broke off though? It looks healthy. I assumed that she cut it often.

She may not want hair longer than MBL or may not have WANTED MBL until now. Everyone doesn't want very long hair. I bet she has had a decent length and healthy hair for a long time :yep:

When she was going through her hairstory on the show with Chris Rock she said she'd cut it short different times due to mishaps with chemicals (color and rio I think). And sometimes she just wanted a short hair cut.

Yeah, Oprah's been short & long, natural and relaxed, weaved, waved, and everything in between. She said some white stylist put some chemical on top of another and her hair fell out at one point, yikes.

When I read his book, way back when, Andre stated that he used to cut Oprah's hair all the time. It was a styling issue. He's done a great job. GREAT job. I need him to write another book.

If one has thick, coarse hair like Oprah, then yes, perhaps one can manipulate their hair, using heat twice a week and brushing it every day. But not with my fine hair. I'd have no hair left if I did that.

The point that should have been made is that every woman is different depending on hair texture and density. What he does to Oprah's hair cannot be replicated with someone like my hair.

I am happy that he suggested that women buy only what they can afford. But then he names off a few high-end brands, and of course, women like myself will check into them. :yep:

I read his book he wrote a while back and I think it's good for folks who are relaxed and maybe non-AA people, but not very informative for naturals, especially with coarser hair types. I remember him saying something about looser textures having more styling options.

He made a good effort...I suppose...though this response:

If you want to embrace you natural texture, you should accept that your styling choices are limited to what you texture can do, and that is different for everyone.

Kind of makes it sounds like "Well you can go natural, but it might suck if you do" He is right that everyone is different, though.

The one statement he makes on natural hair includes the word "limited."

That is the last thing that comes to mind when I think of embracing natural texture.

He is showing a pro relaxer bias, IMO. Which is fine, because he is great at dealing with Oprah's relaxed hair. I would never use shampoo 2x a week, never use a brush to distribute oils, never use heat 2x a week. If I were Oprah, and he did that to my fine strands, I would be bald.[/QUOTE]

:yep:
i would never do these things either and im relaxed

He sounds pretty well informed. Your natural texture will have its limitations, but I doubt that they'll be any more limited than your chemically straightened texture. Every texture has its limits, including straight. Otherwise, that was a good interview. Except for the brushing. I think brushing our hair daily is likely to cause damage. But I guess it must work for some.

Oprah's no longer natural, but you're right, I'm sure he knows what he's doing with natural hair as well since she was natural many times throughout the 24 years he's been her stylist.

Is this really true? I can't ever recall Oprah being natural since her show has been on. Maybe stretching or wearing a wig. Does anyone have pics of her being natural?

To everything in the bold, I think that you could get away with all of that and still have a healthy head of hair if you are dealing with freshly clean hair and conditioned hair. A sulfrate poo would not be stripping and if he's deep conditioning each time, twice a week would not be a problem. I wash on Wed and Sat deep conditioning each time and it has done wonders for my hair. Our problem comes when we want to crank up a curling iron daily on dirty oily hair.

oprah had long thick gorgeous hair in high school.

all 'dre did was to not *** it up

his expertise remains to be proven, as far as I'm concerned
