Hating this transitioning period....Blurb.

I've mastered the mohawk technique with hair rollers and love that I can wash my hair every day if I have to! My rolled hair is beautiful and soft hair if I leave the rollers in overnight. I use magnetic with no heat. (Heat presents with more firmness)

My main concerns are these....

  • I have pretty tight new curls esp with new growth
  • Using my Maximus ministyler straightens some of the new root hair but usually breaks little pieces at the top
  • The new growth feels really dry before and after flat ironing and quite frankly it doesn't feel too good.

I'm seriously thinking of returning to relaxing now that I've got a Heutiful steamer, lots of deep conditioners, the Phytospecific relaxer, taking Mineral rich every day (and it works!) and my mohawk hair roller technique....oh cycling for an hour 4-5x per week (to work and back) and drinking more water.

My hair is a mixture of 3c to 4c.
I had the opinion that finding a way to soften the new growth and straightening it by rollersetting alone would enable me to transition to natural hair textures. However type 4 new growth doesn't seem to comply so well without HIGH heat.

I learnt the hard way through use of a Super Hairstyler and flat iron and possibly flat ironing the whole head unsuccessfully to discover that my hair breaks a lot with those appliances on a frequent basis.

Oh girls....what to do!

My goals are to have healthy moist but strong midback thick long hair.
I also want to take care of my hair better inbetween visits for a trim at a hair salon. (I am going on Saturday - last trim was Dec 31st)

As a child my hair was over my shoulders and problems with breakage was not an issue despite relaxing. What was an issue was in between dry hair periods as I didnt know how to care for my hair.

Is there a method to straighten any type 4 hair by rollersetting alone?

Cheers

hnn, my hair just looks unruly and far from best kempt. With the hair shaft breakage, I know my hair needs time to heal and grow out again however it feels like it's my whole head which needs a reckoning...sigh.

The only thing I may suggest to you is to increase deep conditioning for a few weeks to up the moisture content in your hair and LAY OFF THE HEAT. You are going to hinder your progress before you get anywhere even if you decide to relax. You'll be chemically treating heat damaged hair, which only means inevitable breakage.

I use the Curl Smoothie on my 4 whatever hair, and it works to soften and stretch. I put it on damp hair after my dc, and brush it, then let it dry either in braids or twists, or blow dry when I'm in a rush. It's not super straight, but looks good. I'll try a rollerset and let you know.

I agree- stay away from heat as much as possible. Wear airdried braidouts, twistouts, bantu outs, curlformers, rollersets etc. This will keep your hair healthy and the curly styles will help mentally prepare you for being natural.

You might consider why you are going natural. If it's just a desire for long, healthy hair, you can achieve this natural or relaxed. If you prefer to wear your hair straight or loosely wavy most of the time, it might make more sense to relax or texlax.

I did decide to relax today after pondering over what I was trying to achieve. Primarily, it was to establish a more natural head of hair and somewhat magically achieve smooth results like our type 2 sisters. Being honest with myself, I know that would never happen with unskilled hands. I am still mastering how to take care of my hair and keep it moist. So, to at least give myself a break and work on knowing how to take care of my hair first whilst growing it to MBL, I have relaxed my hair!
I think this too will enable me to rollerset with no heat and achieve healthier results each time. Cheers ladies.

I've been transitioning for almost 1 1/2 years so I'm about 97% natural. What helped me was protective styling. That's all I really did. I know this probably isn't the answer you're looking for.

What's your regimen/products?

Also I actually prefer red mesh rollers for getting my roots smooth. they are much easier to put in. when I'm done I just press the edges and the part area and I'm good to go.

I guess I'm too late though! enjoy your relaxed hair!
