Who still wastes money in a Salon?

Hi guys,
I used to stay in a salon from 9a to 2pm.. Just because my cosmo got greedy and double booked everybody. I am a diyfer because I've always felt that beauty salons should be for special occasions only. Like Proms, birthdays, weddings, first dates, etc.. Not every freaking week. I once heard a cosmotologist talking and she said (this was in 1997)she had to lie on her lease application about how much she made at work because the landlord would think she was lying and not rent to her. I said to myself... dang, you must make a whole freaking lot... I feel that if I go to get my hair trimmed I shouldn't have to be washed and conditioned for that. I am glad those days are over. The only time I step foot in a salon now is...errrr, well.... Oh gee I DON'T. Great clips trims and cuts my hair. I do everything else at home... Thanks to you ladies on this site.... Muaahhh! Love yous!! Anyone reading this still go to a salon? If so, why?

I don't currently. But one day when I have the money and find the right person I will return to receive my pampering. But until that day I have to do it myself.

Same here, girl. Countless time and money. I'm driving a Honda Accord and sister or whomever is driving Lexus. (I'm just saying) Well, this gray hair on hairline is a beast and will not take to box color. Made an appt for Friday only hairline color touch-up. No style and that's $25. But, last for 6 to 8 weeks,, otherwise, I'm the Cosmetologist in this, House of Glam. :yep:

I go to the salon but not as frequent as I used to. Being in the salon from 9am to 3pm started to get old.

When I can learn how to press my hair as straight as she can, I will likely stop all together except for major holidays and vacations.

Girl when I read your post, I experienced a bit of post traumatic stress thinking about those horrid salon experiences....................the atttitude some would get when you tried to tell them what was best for your hair, getting up early on Saturday morning and getting to the shop only to find out the stylist ain't there. By the time they do get there, the other 5 appts have arrived. Not being able to make plans on Saturday because you don't know how long you are gonna be at the salon. Stylists taking people ahead of you when you made an appt. Stylists eating on your appt time, taking calls on your appt time, going to the store to pick up products on your appt time. No ma'am.

The one and only salon(s) I step foot in these days (and it's rare) are Great Clips and SuperCuts for trims.

I do my own hair and from start to finish, it only takes me about 45 minutes maybe less. I save money and can have fun on Saturdays.

To all those lousy stylists who didn't value us black women and or abused us............karma is a ****** huh? Heard ya'll hurtin for money. Nah don't take it out on the Dominicans.............blame yourselves! Just because we are black doesn't mean we like abuse or don't value our time like other races of women!

Anything they can do, I can do better.

Once I decided to go natural, my behind hasn't stepped foot in a salon and probably never will.

I still go, every 9-10 weeks for relaxer touch up. No shame here. Self relaxing is totally not my thing, I have had several setbacks as result of trying to save $$$. My time in the salon is well worth it :yep: granted I dont spend all day, I am there for 2.5 hours.

I'l bite. I go to a salon every Saturday for a wash and set. $20 . $25 if I get a treatment. in and out in 90 min. walking distance from my house, very nice Haitian ladies. go in for a touch up every 10 - 12 weeks $45. Money well spent IMO. I catch up on my kindle reading and Haitian cake is very tasty and my hair is just fine.

Why the heck is anyone out there blaming Dominicans, they do the exact thing! I've gone to Dominicans all my life and have mercy I sympathize with your every point. How many times did this woman tell me "ven temprano" and I'm there before her and then she gonna take someone else before me. Eating, on the phone, dealing with their kids, having their teenaged family members wash my hair...:perplexed I had no idea I had a choice. I had no idea that I didn't have to deal with that.

I loved the natural salon I found. I've only been there once but I freaking loved it, if I ever to I'll go there.

I'm sorry I don't see why you would begrudge a hairstylist a decent living. What she or he drives or what he or she makes for a living she not factor into your decision to go to a salon. What should matter is do they care for your hair, Is your hair healthy as a result of what said stylist is providing, am I in and out in a timely manner, am I treated with respect and in a courteous manner, and is what services I am requesting cost effective.

I frequented the salon every two weeks religiously from the age of 13 all the way to the age of 18. Then I left for college which was 4 hours away from home, so shawty had no choice but to get on a HHJ because paying someone on a college budget was simply OUT of the question .

My stylist was amazing though. She DC'ed my hair regularly, trimmed my ends on a 3 month interval (Every relaxer) and actually taught me how to stretch my relaxers past 8 weeks. She was all about healthy hair and would actually turn clientele down had they ask to do something damaging, like permanent color and relaxers in the same visit. However, her rates were purdy high considering. She had been doing my hair exclusively for 5 years and I still had to pay 50 for a wash, treatment and flat iron and 75 for a relaxer, treatment and flat iron lol; Oh and lets not forget the 10 dollar trim fee. Shoot, that's a lot of loot to a full time college student on a part time job budget and with a slight shopping addiction. Imagine had I not been a regular.....LAWD!

I enjoy going to my salon every 10-12 weeks for my relaxer. I get what I need and my trims are even and only when necessary. My stylist knows his trade and I only trust him in my head. So waste of money? Horrible experience? Not in my book. My hair is thriving wonderfully.

OP you might want to change the word "wastes" so others can chime in without feeling condemned :lachen:

I sent a text to my hair stylist asking her if she could fit me in on March 31st. I see her MAYBE 2x a year if that. I went twice last year for trims. She's great, does a fabulous job, and doesn't waste my time, but I like doing my own hair and using my own products. Plus if I used that much heat on my head every week I'd be bald.

I have no business going to a salon anyway. These are all the things I own:
  • Hair Dryer
  • Steamer
  • Blow dryer
  • CHI flatiron
  • Huge bag of rollers, bobby pins, clips
  • All kinds of oils, conditioners, powders

I have spent a good amount of money on these items and I need to make the most of my investment.

Salon free since July 2012. Could never find someone who was professional on time and didn't charge $75 for a Motions relaxer( WTF). I don't miss my standing 7am Saturday appointment that started at 9am. I enjoy doing my own hair.

I still go twice or three times a month .. $15 wash and set with the roots blown out!! No traumatic experiences over here! If my hair looks great, and is healthy.. Why not?!? It's not a waste if you love the finish product and feel great after leaving.. Sorry it couldn't work out for you OP *Kanye Shrug*

The entire OP is a hot mess. Others might think you waste time doing everything yourself. Why is going to the salon seen as a waste of time? And I have no idea why her salary bothered you  I'm away at school but once I graduate I will be "wasting" time in there often. I hate doing my hair and I'm not ashamed.

It's only a waste of money if you didn't get the service you went in there for. I used to be a salon-phobic too. But honestly, before I came across the salon I work for, I said I'd never be in one again. Now, I just ask one of the girls to trim my hair for me when needed, and sometimes I actually have to ask them to cut off more because they respect how I am with my hair LOL!

Everything else I do myself because I like doing my own hair.

The thread title is kind of off putting but I will answer anyway.

I use to go every two weeks. Yes, there was a bit of a wait, sometimes a long wait but my hair's health was never compromised so I felt I was getting a return on my investment.

I started taking care of my hair weekly when dh experienced health issues as I didn't have time to be in a salon. After his health improved, I continued taking care of my hair at home. I still frequent the salon for relaxer/trims.

In either case, I never considered it a waste of money.

A waste of money is trying a ton of products that don't work for your hair and/or causes a setback.

I try to go once every 8 weeks to get my hair straightened. I'm a bit terrified about doing it myself now. (I actually did it for the inauguration of President Barack Obama and I didn't have any damage but I didn't get it as straight and silky as I'm used to) I like having a break from doing my hair every once in a while and I tend to get so neurotic about my hair, it's nice to have that reassurance that I'm taking good care of it. She trims my hair as well, which isn't often since I don't use heat that often. I still haven't bought a steamer so that's the only time I get a "true" steam treatment. (I use an at home steaming method but sometimes I question if it is as affective as the steamer) She actually said to me last time I went if I wanted her to try a curly style on me next time I come in, so looks like I'll have more options with her, if it goes over well. Really just getting a break is nice. I'm never in there all day, never been double booked, never waited ridiculous amounts of time for her, so the experiences with her have all been relaxing. (aside from when she first cut off all the damaged ends I had from my excessive heat styling and when I dyed my hair. But the anxiety of that comes from my own internal issues, not anything the salon controls.)

Going to the salon is only a waste of money if you don't get what you pay for and you don't think it is worth it. If I have time, I go to my stylist. Even though I can do my hair myself (she taught me), she does a better job and is faster. For me it is worth the money, even though she is not cheap. I don't just pay for the wash, style, etc. I pay for her expertise and knowledge. Just like all the people in the Reneice thread pay to go to her for her expertise and knowledge. If going to a stylist doesn't work for you, that is okay. It doesn't work for everyone.

If you went to a stylist where you had to wait on service all day and didn't discuss your issues with the stylist, that is on you. I had an issue with my stylist regarding time and I discussed it with her. I don't have that problem anymore. Let your stylist know when you have a problem. If they don't change, then don't go back to them.

I agree with you OP. I think the perspective on this matter depends on how people choose to spend their time and what else they have going on in their lives.

I work full time during the day, I also own a business in addition to this which means I'm working 24/7. Not to mention, how I'm living now is actually an improvement in terms of my schedule. For the better part of the last 2 years I was also completing a graduate degree (full course load) and trying to make a relationship work (didn't survive), WHILE working full-time and running my business in off hours.

So, no I don't want to waste my time sitting in a salon when I could be using that time to meet with my own clients, make money. If I'm going to waste time I need to be in control of it. That said, to me, staring at a wall might be more productive than paying $100 and sitting in a salon. Depends on the type of day I'm having.

I can no longer waste 5-8 hours of my day sitting in a chair while a stylist talks on the phone, eats lunch, works on 5 other heads, picks the kids up from school, etc. I simply do not have the time for that.

I self relax. I also self wash, DC and roller set weekly in a quarter of the time.
*flips hair*

Maybe the rest of ya'll have found a magical Black or Hispanic stylist who won't eat up a whole day but I haven't.

The one thing I will visit a salon for is a weave every 4 months or so, which was my preferred style of choice for years.

Even that has gotten old. Aint nobody got time to pay $500 and be there all day. Goodnight!

I go every other week. Even though I have been on here forever, I still hate doing my own hair and love the small bit of me time that I have when I am there. I have used the same stylist for almost ten years and she has me in and out in less than 45 minutes.
