DoDo

Big Hair, Don't Care
I started at six inches on January of 2012.

My regi is not consistent however I will try to enumerate what is consistent:

My shampoos are always sulfate free if they are not cleansing conditioners.

I never spend more than three to four weeks without washing my hair.

I almost always deep condition my hair.

I always use a leave in, a moisture milk, an oil, and a butter.

I always finger detangle before using a comb.

My holy grails are:

Creme of Nature Argan Oil Shampoo

Ouidad Curl Cowash

Oyin Hair Dew

Camille Rose Moisture Milk

Purabody Naturals Moisture Milk

Avocado oil

Coconut oil

Grapeseed oil

APB hair and body butter oil

Bask Palm Tapioca Deluxe Hair Creme

Avocado Butter

Murumuru Butter

and Redken Extreme Anti-snap Leave-in as a heat protectant

I mostly protective style and keep my hair stretched at all times.

I'm about 10 yrs into my hhj, so I've been through a lot of phases with my hair. I keep my regimen very simple with only a few staple products. When my hair was shorter, I would shampoo and DC weekly and wore my hair mostly in small twists, with the occasional twist out.

As it got longer I had to stop wearing twists because they were damaging my ends. Now I shampoo and DC every 1.5 to 2 weeks, and I blow dry and flat iron on low heat. I do a bone straight flat iron maybe every few months, and a light protein treatment as needed. I dust my ends every 2-3 months and trim once a year.

Products: Any sulfate free shampoo, Silk dreams vanilla silk conditioner, grapeseed oil or castor oil on my ends. I add an egg to my conditioner for protein, and I use gel on my edges if I need to. That's it.

FoxxyLocs I remember you decided to stop with twists. How do you wear your hair daily? And what is your hair type?

I'm mostly 4a with some 3c. I wear a lot of buns, occasionally I'll wear it down, maybe some flexi rod curls. I recently started doing flat twist outs, which I like too. Buns are my everyday style since I don't wear my hair out at work.

Thanks. How do you bun? With a hair tie? Does your hair get matted/messed up in the middle of the bun? FoxxyLocs Thinking of bunning more often.

I've been natural since the big chop in 2005.

I reached tailbone length, stretched, in 2008, I think.

In 2010, I started locs on very long hair. I loved them for three years. They were my carefree hair years. No detangling. It was great.

In 2013, for reasons I won't go into here, I took my locs down. Meaning, I gingerly—over about a two week period—"detangled" them. I was surprised to still have plenty of long hair on my head. But my hair did suffer some damage.

Right now, I'm WL when stretched but my hair shrinks an incredible amount. I think I will probably cut quite a bit of at the end of the year, only to grow it again. I will be free, at that point, to start locs again if I want. But I haven't made a decision on that yet.

I used to be a product junky way back when. I used to spend a large amount of time nurturing my hair. Taking care of my hair was a huge part of my life. As time went on, I did less and less. Benign neglect probably brought me farther in growth than any product or technique did.

I am currently in school and have very little time to do anything to my hair. I have to keep it off my collar for school and therefore almost always wear it in a bun. I wash, condition, detangle and usually put it in four big twists, which I then collect in a bun. This is to keep down on the tangling issues. I really don't do anything else to my hair except henna, which I have used for quite a few years.

I basically do one big bantu knot and secure with jumbo bobby pins. I don't use hair ties at all. I've never had issues with matting. I don't bun wet or damp hair - I think that's usually what causes matting.

Not WL but I agree with this. The longer 4a/4b hair gets the more it tangles at the ends. I always presumed longer 4a/4b hair would tangle less due to the weight of the hair but I was wrong.

Rooted Yet Flowing
I stopped cutting/relaxing my hair in 2011 and at the time, I had a chin length bob. Today my longest layers are at waist.

Regimen/products

I'm a regular roller setter for the most part and I wash my hair every 10-14 days in the fall/winter/spring and every 7-10 days in the summer. ...it really depends on how dirty/oily/dry it is.

For the wash process:
I love Elucence shampoos and Hairveda conditioners. (although any conditioner with slip will do) For a leave in conditioner, I use It's a 10 miracle.

For maintenance:
When I need to moisturize, I'll use rosewater/glycerin or CD Hair Balm. For updo's or to tame my edges, I use KCCC.

Every other month I clarify and do a protein treatment as I still have blonde highlights and a few inches of relaxed ends left.

Misc:
When I want my hair pin straight, I'll get it pressed at the salon. (Maybe 4-6 times a year) I've tried flat ironing it at home myself once or doing a saran wrap roller set to get it straight, but I prefer the results I get at the salon.
When I'm tired of my hair, I may get braids installed. If I'm craving a change and want to go shorter, I'll get a sew in weave and have it cut into a cute style.

I really don't consider what I do to be anything special. Just time, patience, consistency and having fun with styles along the way.

Still at MBL but I will say I agree with divachyk. It's also about knowing your hair too.

These days I'm lucky if I wash once a week and that's usually forced. People think I'm crazy when I talk about tweaking my regimen seasonally, but I noticed it works as sometimes the same products don't work certain times of the year and that just has to be accepted sometimes. In the spring and fall, I sometimes have to wash twice a week simply because on humidity and not really being about to use medium proteins since the humidity is not consistent like the winter and summer.

I always:
Wash
Deep condition
Protein when needed
Mostly rollerset with a leave-in and/or protectant
Protective style with minimal manipulation possible

M&S used to work for me, but nowadays it's just when I need it and not really a preventative measure. For me, it's not about preventing dryness during the week, but getting it all in on my wash day. And it's funny because I remember hearing that statement by a YouTuber and I didn't believe it at the time (I thought to myself "wench is WL, she can say that" lol). If it doesn't get in on a wash day, then my products need to be reevaluated. I don't do much with my hair during the week, so my theory is it shouldn't be drying out. I just determine then something needs to change. No biggie. But less is more, knowing your hair is key, and a lot of the times, you'll realize your not really doing much anyway.

I applied my last relaxer August 2010. I BC'd August 2011. I reached WL about six months ago (shortly after the three year anniversary of my last relaxer). Now, I'm at WHip length. I mud wash and "henna gloss" every 2-3 weeks. I wear my hair stretched in twist outs and braid outs 95% of the time. I moisturize and seal almost daily. I apply shea butter to my ends nightly and my moisture staples are shea moisture products. I don't go to sleep without putting my hair in chunky braids or twists (2-6 sections depending on the desired style in the morning). I don't protective style ever.

I've been WL twice. Less is more is the best recipe for retention.

Cleanse, condition, air dry once weekly
Moisturize / Seal daily
Protective style often
Trim regularly

HHJ started in 2010.

I'm about an inch away from WL (but I decided to bust in on the convo anyway since I'm so close...LOL), but I agree that a simple routine works best for me. My routine is almost identical to this except I don't "seal daily".

I am natural w/wl hair when it's stretched. I started 2007. I'm sure that I would be way past tb if I would have stayed consistent and didn't have setbacks.

My hair loves coconut oil, moisture protective styles and protein. I haven't found a shampoo that I love since the original green con.

I really don't have a set regime any more. I cowash more often in the summer than the colder months. On days that I shampoo I cowash before and after I shampoo, it helps me with detangling

I'm natural, my last relaxer was April '10 and my longest layer is about an inch past WL.

I think low manipulation has helped me the most. I wash and style once a week. I bun towards the end of my style. I NEVER W&G (my roots get matted). Wash, stretch, bun and go at the most. I also henna which is my protein and it helps my fine-medium strands survive longer

I haven't protective styled in 2 years. I keep my hair stretched. I rarely DC. At most I wear a shower cap with my regular TJ CON and sit under my heating pad. Yes my heating pad for cramps

I don't do bandwagons and when I have a product I like, I'm good.

My staples are:
-TJ Nourish and Spa shampoo and conditioner
-GVP PM skinny serum
-Nupur 9 henna.
-KNKT for important braidouts that need definition

Extras, non essentials.
-Joico K-Pak if I need a early protein boost.
-Matrix biolage leave in spray.
-Ecostyler Argan Oil gel

The common thing I am seeing is simply a "Less Is More" regimen. Not much on expensive products.

I wash my hair once a week and Keep them in large twists--they retain moisture when the twists are larger.

I love to use Ayurvedic herbs like Henna,Brahmi, shikakai and others.

I also use VO5 in my henna and when I rinse.

For flat ironing. I wash the day before with a hibiscus/shikakai mix which helps give a silky shinier feel to the results. Hair stays straighter.
I DO NOT use any oil(why? Think of chicken in frying oil), I only add in a little argan oil serum and heat protectants. That's it. I flat iron the next day using a maxi-glide. I do not need any moisturization because the glide helps to seal it in. As a matter of fact I end up massaging my own scalp for natural oils and purposely run the ends of my hair of natural sebum.

I am relaxed.. retain my length by not putting a lot of stress to it ( excess combing, heat styling, styling in general, teasing, etc.), and I wash it once a month and get relaxers twice a year :)

twolala, does your hair not get dry the other 3 weeks out the month? Obviously you're doing something right as your length is awesome.

Thanks! yes I have to keep it moisturized a lot. I use argon oil and Palmer's coconut oil hair milk for a daily moisturizer :)

I shaved my head bald in august 2009, so in a few months I'll be 5 years. I do have a high waist though, so probably reached waist length earlier than for example my sister who has a much lower waist. My hair grew really fast after I shaved, i reached SL within a year, then it took ages to get to APL, I got very discouraged and kind of abandoned all hair care, which meant set backs every week (on wash day), and losing a lot of hair detangling after neglect. I recently, bout few weeks ago had a really bad set back which prompted me back to look after my hair. I had left it for about 2 weeks, and kept showering without undoing my braids, when I finally decided to detangly I had to cut large chunks out. Back to a routine now, of detangling more often and never leaving it longer than a week. My ends are bad though, full, but bad, split ends and white ends (WTH ARE THEY??? WHITE ENDS!). plan is to have a good search and destroy come august, no time for it now.
