hm. interesting that she considers 340 a low temp. i play around with temps in the 300s and they seem kind of high to me.

anyway i dont usually like these youtube hair guru videos, they are just too long and boring for my impatient self, but i liked this one

340 is low for coarse (thick strands) hair. I know because I tried to get away with 230 degrees and that was a laugh riot. I may try her temperature next time. Overall, I liked the video and I think it gave me realistic expectations of what my hair looks like with heat applied to it.

yeah, i agree that for different hair types they can handle different levels of heat. i think i was kind of assuming everyone avoided heat high enough to steam or smoke.

You are right. I think ideally you are not supposed to flat iron on any higher than 375 on any hair type according to what I have read.

when I flat iron I usually do 320-ish, but I could probably get away with a lot lower. I usually just go for a light press, but! I could get it straight if I tried lol. I don't have super thick strands (wish I did!!)

her hair came out so pretty! she has such nice videos

Her hair is gorgeous. Yeah 340 is low heat for my hair type as well. Lots of naturals do around 425 degrees but that's for a more sleek look.

Her hair is beautiful as usual but that was not that great a flat iron. Her hair look similar to how it usually looks. It can take a while to learn how to flat iron you hair and what techniques look best for your hair.

It really does depend. My hair doesn't react to temperatures below 390, it looks like a very puffy blowout at anything below. Even 390 has proved to be very conservative, the last 2 times my hair was straightened the heat was well above 400. Despite that (and it being professionally done) I still do not end up with a relaxed-sleek look the way some ladies here manage. I still don't know if it's due to technique or heat or the flat iron itself or what.

If her hair is very coarse she could go well over 400 without any damage to her pattern. She just doesn't know that yet.

I wish she could've gotten her hair sleeker. I think she needed to blow dry first then use the low temp flat iron. I think she was trying to get results like mahogany curls. Her hair turned out gorgeous, and she didn't have any adverse effects after flat ironing. But other than that, I really liked the video; I've been wanting her to flat iron her hair for years. I hope she does more videos with using heat safely.

She has beautiful hair! The outcome sucked. Her hair would look amazing with a professionally done flat iron. I would be really drool worthy. Nap looks like it would take a lot to hear damage her hair. If you're gonna use heat might as well go all out and have it looking right.

I totally understand her plight. After being natural for so long I don't prefer a straight look anymore and don't really know what to do with straight hair.

Her results look similar to a bad salon blowout that I got. It was frizzy within the hour.

She could get sleek results with a blow out (blow downward to close cuticles) and flat iron but she didn't seem to want a sleek look.

I wonder how long it took to flat iron her entire head? It seemed to take hours. I would have given up.

I've never been able to get a good flatiron starting on puffy hair. I think that's where she went wrong. If you hair is already frizzy, it's not easy to get it sleek and smooth with a regular flat iron. Her results look like my hair after blowdrying alone and even then its been straighter than that at times.

She should try it again using better techniques.

Her thickness is nothing to do with why she got the results she did

It's her prep work

That is what I was thinking. I was thinking, boy that was a waste of time and effort.

I flat iron at 440 degrees with no adverse reactions, but that's what works for me.

I have always loved how "elastic" her hair is. I wish my hair had that much elasticity, but I like to live vicariously through her :(

She has some gorgeous hair, but I've seen it look better without heat. I hope it bounces back well.

I think she got the results she did b/c she didn't blow dry. I know for me a great flat iron job starts with a great blow out or rollerset. I didn't think it came out very well. Her stretched styles are way better.

Thats a whole heap of hair lol but seriously i know that her hair would revert quickly because it so much hair and the setting was low, also the confine space of a bathroom is a no go. I would love to see it professionally straightened though.

Cause thanks is not enough! I love Nap, but that was more blah to me, not epic. I was thinking that it was going to be sleek looking. It would have turned out better with a 'really good' blow out and a little higher heat. It can be done safely, especially if this is the only time she will do it.

I think she's good, I would hate for her to have a set back and have to cut any of that gorgeous mane. I am scared that she may have some damage with the little heat she did use. Some people's hair can't take heat at all. I have heat damage in the front of my head from two years ago, I am tempted to cut and start over.

The reason why I never wore (and still don't) wear my hair straight when I stopped going to salons years ago is because I never mastered using the flat iron. With that said, I do like the poofy look but on long hair like hers. On my medium length hair, it always looked HAM on me!
