Relaxed Hair, Permanent Color, Help!

Karrueche

MOMMA LOC.
Hey ladies! I'm new to the board and after some lurking I'm finally asking for assistance. I was natural for about two years before I decided it wasn't for me anymore. I relaxed in April and it ended up being under-processed because the strength was regular. I dealt with the half curly half straight for awhile. I dyed my hair with a permanent color earlier this month.

I don't want to corrective relax anytime soon but when it comes time can I even do it? Or will it cause more damage than I'm possibly in store for? And when I do corrective relax, exactly how should I go about it?

I wouldn't do the corrective if you can help it. Why did you color?:spank:
I've had relaxed/permanently colored hair before and it's just asking for a lot of damage. Your ends are not going to be happy.
Make sure you deep condition regularly and use protein regularly.

I colored because I got bored and had the color in my hair stash for months :(. I can deal with the underprocessed parts because it's easier to manage. The new growth is literally killing me and I can't deal with the two different textures :cry3: But I'll hold out on correcting. I just don't know what to do with my hair, I'm sick of wearing it in a kinky-coily afro.

Just do a touch up then... but leave the rest of your hair alone. It's going to be double processed for a long time. Doing a corrective will triple process it ( and i've been there too because my hair doesn't straighten well from relaxers so I'm relaxed some parts several times over) and that's asking for a world of damage.
You can try stretching your hair with a blow dryer too for a change of style.

I would wait another 2-4 weeks. Did you go darker, or lighter?
I'm able to get away with stuff like that, without my hair falling out. Let's see I bleached my hair, then relaxed several months later, then I colored it black, and it didn't take, after that I use semi and demi. I haven't use a demi since April. I won't use another one until next April.
I would suggest using a reconstructor once, or twice before you relax again. Also look into Olaplex.

Oh I have had to do two correctives messing with Lye relaxer. I have finally decided to stick with lye and not have straight results. No lye is damaging for my hair.

Please don't.

Yeah I would do what you suggested! Just do a regular touchup.

Yeah I can fool around with lye too. I've relaxed parts of my hair over and over with lye and not had any insane damage. I'd never touch non lye again.

Hair falling out means the scalp has been damaged, no? I've never experienced that either.

Apparently nobody that has posted sees a problem with these statements. (hence the reason why I posted the video above)

Op please go to a stylist and get a consultation before you do anything chemical related.

What? She is already double processed. That's why we said to touch up the new growth only. i have seen that video, and who knows what exactly what homegirl did at home. And she went to a stylist that told her she could relax after 5 weeks. She waited longer, so what are you saying?

I went lighter(?). My hair is red and I didn't bleach it. Naturally, my hair is a dark brown color. Typical semi and demi hair dyes don't show up at all on my hair. I used the Dark 'n Lovely Go Intense hair dye if it matters.

What I'm saying is if you don't know what you are doing (Op) and you want to keep the existing (processed) hair on your head, go to a PROFESSIONAL stylist for a consultation.

See. Now how hard was that to understand?

professionals will destroy the hair too. My hair is in much better shape when I take care of it vs any professional. If she knows how to touch up her hair at home I see no reason to consult a stylist.

Nope that's not what you said. You contradicted yourself posting that video. Did you even watch the video? That girl is back to doing her own hair... she went to a stylist and was given bad advice. And who knows what the stylist did to her hair. See what you should have said was double processing is risky business, regardless.

Why are you being snarky? Are you one of those people that like to e-fight?

E-Hugs! We've all made mistakes on our journey. You'll get through this one. I recommend what everyone else agreed on. It's okay to do a corrective only on the roots. You should be fine. Just use vaseline on the relaxed ends. That way your chances of overprocessing are minimized significantly.

I said and I quote,

"Don't do it"
"...go to a stylist and get a consultation before you do anything chemical related"
and
"...if you don't know what you are doing (Op) and you want to keep the existing (processed) hair on your head, go to a PROFESSIONAL stylist for a consultation"

Nowhere did I contradict myself. I posted the video of the girl who gave herself a "chemical haircut" to illustrate what relaxing over colored hair can do.

And for the record the stylist in the video isn't responsible for her hair tragedy since she didn't follow his advice anyway.

O-kay side stepping the unnecessary drama:rolleyes:

So OP you need to do a few reconstructive treatments and dcs before any more processes. You can also use a temporary clear rinse to help smooth cuticles.

See if you can stick out at least 8 weeks before your next relaxer.

When you're relaxing concentrate on new growth, coat previously straightened hair with a protein conditioner, the ones that didn't go straight the last 5 or so minutes (dilute relaxer with a bit of olive oil ) and apply to those bits.

Rinse and neutralise thoroughly. If you can do a reconstructive treatment before conditioning. Make sure to also up your moisturizing deep treatments.

You'll be just fine

I wanted to update. I haven't relaxed my hair, I kinda don't plan to at least no time soon. I've been deep conditioning my hair weekly, 2-3 times a week. I even trimmed my split ends and have been wearing twist-outs. Also, I've done plenty of protein treatments that aren't too harsh since my hair is protein sensitive. My hair is starting to seem healthier I just have to refrain from being super lazy.
