I miss the creepy flashing envelope. It reminds me that I have pm's to look at. I know it annoyed some but maybe there could be a way to turn it off and on?

I think this was taken away in order to revamp the board. Some of the new features were conflicting with others so they were disabled. Once they are finished, they will probably have to be added back in one at a time to see what setting was causing the issue.
