Hey ladies,

I'm planning to try the rubberband method for some jumbo box braids as a protective style in the winter & I'd really appreciate some tips or recommendations. (I will be 4 months into transitioning if anyone also has tips regarding braiding for that)

I have a few questions for both those who have successfully DIY braided & maintained the styles and those who were not so successful:
  • About how long does it take you to do your DIY braids?
  • How long have your DIY braids lasted? (Especially anyone who attempted jumbo)
  • Would eco styler gel provide too much slip?
  • How do you ensure the braids are not too tight?

Any other input would be great too.

Thanks!

I used to do my own braids often, but I haven't done them in a while.

I did my sister's box braids in 2 hours last week. My niece wanted to learn so I let her do a few braids. I didn't use gel, because my sister has very fine 3b hair and It would've been too slippery.

I put a good amount of tension on the base of the braid to grip it tight. It wasn't too tight though, because I didn't want to cause any damage

That’s what I do.. I drink and I know things....
I came to ask that exact same question and I was considering the rubber band method as well..
