Great Salon Experience in Chicago (Pictures)

I went to Chicago for my class reunion Friday and Saturday. I had my trusty bun for the party Friday night at Bourbon Street, but I went to the hair salon on Saturday to get my hair done for the first time in 10 years. I had originally asked my mother to make an appt. for me somewhere, but then I thought of my best Chicago friend T and asked her to make me an appt. with her hair stylist who she has been going to for 20 years. She made the appt. for 1:00 pm, but I changed it to noon as my experiences with hair salons means that you are going to be in there three, four, five hours, but that was not the case at all.

At noon I was at the shampoo bowl. There was one other patron in the salon. When I expressed surprise, she said that she schedules her appt. 45 minutes to an hour apart. The whole time I was there, there was only one person to the three stylist there. There was never more than six people in the salon.

At the shampoo bowl, when she took down my hair, she said I had nice hair and she pointed out that I had splits. I told her I know as I used to trim my hair every two to three months whenever I would flat-iron, but have only trimmed twice in 18 months because I had only flat-ironed twice. I told her I needed a trim and she said we would talk about it when I got in her chair.

She washed my hair (she did not overwash and strip it) and put me under the dryer with some Nairobi deep moisturizing conditioner, which had a nice tingle. When I got in her chair, she asked me if I used a metallic dye. I told her I used Bigen about every 10 weeks and she said she could tell because metallic dyes are drying to hair. She said that it was good I did not have a relaxer or the metallic dye would likely dry my hair out too much and cause some damage. (I think I am going to revisit my use of metallic dyes although she did not discourage me from using it.)

She combed my hair out with a wide tooth comb and there were no tangles and very little snagging. As she was blowdrying my hair, she said again how nice my hair was. After blowdrying, she flat-ironed and that is when she trimmed. She was very respectful, did not try to talk me into anything and was concerned about do anything I was uncomfortable with, but I told her to do what needs to be done as I knew my splits were pretty bad since I never had a professional trim after growing out my relaxer.

[The bad news is that I lost about three inches of hair. I was APL and now I am just below shoulder length. The good news is that my when I run my hand over my hair, it is so smooth, it borders on sensual when dry and when wet, I do not have to detangle at all and there is absolutely no snagging. I had so many snags before, I guess I was just tearing my hair everyday because I actually had not retained much length at all in the last 18 months...]

After trimming, she curled it. I wanted it under and she talked me into curling it up and this is the result. I kept feeling my hair because it was soooo straight, it felt like a fresh relaxer. I couldn't believe it! I was in there for about 90 minutes. It was completely stress-free and even enjoyable. I got lots and lots of compliments from my family and the folks at the reunion  and even when it got hot and humid during the evening after all the dancing, my hair did not swell up :nono:. There are five pictures altogether in my album that show off the shine, straightness, full back, front and side.

Wow!!! Your hair looks soooooooooo pretty. I love the flip curls too!!!

Now that those bad ends are off...your hair is going to take off now, better than before. I'm glad that you had a good experience with a stylist:yep:

It is called Hi-Maintenance on 103rd. It is funny because there were so few ladies in the shop that I kept wondering how they made money, but the inside was verrrry nice, so...I guess they do make enough to keep everything going pretty well. The lady that did my hair only works on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I don't know the names of the other ladies in the shop, but everyone's hair looked nice and my guess is that none of them overbook because this was Saturday and at most there were six people in the shop. When I was talking to my best friend and raving about my experience, I kept saying, you know how you wait 30-40 minutes, then they sit you at the shampoo bowl for 20 minutes, then put you under the dryer for 50 minutes when the dryer cut off 20 minutes in and then you are just sitting there waiting to get your hair done. She said, no, I have clue what you are talking about as I have never had that experience.....

Thanks ladies for the compliments. It is called Hi Maintenance Hair Spa. It is located at 1400 West 103rd Street. The phone number is 773-238-7122. I saw Lyn. She only works on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I do not have a cell or home number for her and the two times I called her, it was at the salon during her days there.

It's always nice to hear of good salon reviews. Your hair really looks good, too. And she did not pressure you with the amount to cut? I know there weren't a lot of people there, and you were probably concerned with your own hair, but did you happen to notice anyone with hair like mine in there (natural 4b?)

oh, it looks like they have a trichologist on site, too:

There were no naturals in the salon, but me. We spoke on the phone before I left Atlanta and I sent her the link to my hair album. When I told her that I was natural, she only asked how thick was my hair. However, it was not in any manner that indicated that she would not be able to deal with thick natural hair. The products she used did not promote any kind of tangling or matting. I don't know how to describe her except that she is very nice, respectful and...just cool -- and does not in any way impose herself on or pressure folks. With a stylist like that, it is very easy to make the best decisions for your hair as being pressured or being made to feel bad leads to bad decisions, regrets, frustration, anger and sadness. (I had a hairdresser once who told me that she wouldn't do my hair if I did not consent to a trim and I had an important function to attend in the next few hours and she had already shampooed my hair. This was at a salon in Chicago on 79th street. This was in 1995 and she cut about four inches off my hair.)
