How do you care for braids?

I'm getting sick of doing my hair and I was thinking of getting braids for about 2 months. How do you care for braids that's all your hair(no added pieces)? How soon after a relaxer do you get them? what kind of braids are best? Is it damaging to have braids in for so long? How often do you wash and condition them? what products are best for them? do you have to use braid spray and put something on them everyday?
Also, I'm not overly fond of wearing braids out, so I was thinking of getting a wig. How much are good wigs usually? what do you put over the braids while wearing the wigs?
Sorry for all of the questions, but I've never had braids before.
